Living In The Past: Preservation, Interpretation, And Engagement, And The 19th – Early 20th Century Home, Kirsten Jarrett Jan 2014

Living In The Past: Preservation, Interpretation, And Engagement, And The 19th – Early 20th Century Home, Kirsten Jarrett

Kirsten Jarrett

In recent years, boundaries between curated domestic space (typically open to the public, maintained by museum professionals, and supported by government or charitable funding), and privately occupied dwellings, have on occasion been eroded. Each year, usually as part of annual heritage events run by non-profit organisations, a small number of residents permit members of the public to view features of historic interest within their homes. Furthermore, extensive opportunities to share information, images, and data on-line allow residents to ‘virtually’ display historical features within otherwise closed domestic spaces. Adopting approaches from ‘Rescue’, Research, and Public Archaeology, the Living in the Past ...

My Journey To Locate The Genesis Pentapolis North Of The Dead Sea, David E. Graves Phd

Two archaeological sites have recently been identified as Sodom (Genesis 19), but which is the best candidate for the location of Sodom: Tall el-Ḥammâm, at the northern end of the Dead Sea in the Jordan Valley, or Bâb edh-Dhrâ, at the southern end of the Dead Sea in the Ghor? This article argues that of the two popular candidates Tall el-Hammam is the best candidate.

Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger Jan 2014

Patrick Scott’S Work For Signa Design Consultants, Mary Ann Bolger

Mary Ann Bolger

This essay examines Patrick Scott’s work as a designer in mid-twentieth century Ireland. It focuses in particular on the work of one of Ireland’s first modern design consultancies, Signa, where Scott was the general design consultant. The paper argues that Signa’s designs provided an early model for a design vocabulary that could be, in the words of the British design critic Herbert Read, both “Irish and contemporary”.

Influence Of The Ancient Near Eastern Vassal Treaties On The Hippocratic Oath, David E. Graves Phd Jan 2012

Influence Of The Ancient Near Eastern Vassal Treaties On The Hippocratic Oath, David E. Graves Phd

David E. Graves PhD

Over the past eighty years scholars have documented multiple similarities between ancient Near Eastern vassal treaties (ANEVT) and various other documents including the biblical testaments, and Homer’s Iliad and the Odyssey. Furthermore, while Stol, van der Eijk, and Geller document the influence of Mesopotamian medicinal terminology on the Oath written by Hippocrates, the fourth century B.C. father of medicine, scholars have overlooked possible Mesopotamian influences on the literary structure of the Oath. This article will highlight some structural similarities between two, otherwise separate genres of literature, the ANEVT and the Hippocratic Oath. If specific Mesopotamian structural influence can ...

Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas Jan 2011

Teaching Classical Sociological Theory In Singapore: The Context Of Eurocentrism, Syed Farid Alatas

farid alatas

We argue that there is a need to rethink the teaching of classical sociological theories given our concern with the limitations of the received theoretical canon, and through our encounters with students of sociology who also persistently ask that the classics be shown to be meaningful and of contemporary relevance. In our teaching, we highlight Eurocentrism as an additional and essential context for understanding the rise of classical sociological theory, and to attune students in more meaningful ways to the works of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim. Ironically, such an approach constitutes a new form of legitimating the classics by revealing ...
