At Wit's End: The Deadly Discourse On The Jewish Joke [Table Of Contents], Louis Kaplan May 2020

At Wit's End: The Deadly Discourse On The Jewish Joke [Table Of Contents], Louis Kaplan

Sociology

Scholarly and thought-provoking work that places Jewish humor at the center of a discourse about Jewish and German relations through most of the 20th century

At Wit’s End explores the fascinating discourse on Jewish wit in the twentieth century when the Jewish joke became the subject of serious humanistic inquiry and inserted itself into the cultural and political debates among Germans and Jews against the ideologically-charged backdrop of anti-Semitism, the Jewish question, and the Holocaust.

The first in-depth study to explore the Jewish joke as a crucial rhetorical figure in larger cultural debates in Germany, author Louis Kaplan presents ...

The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller Oct 2019

The Strategies And Risks Of Performing Citizenship And Rights Through Music, Carolin Mueller

Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights

My work explores the capacity of cultural producers to perform “insurgent citizenship,” a term theorized by James Holsten (2008) to describe how the peripheries of social organization can propel alternative modes of civic participation, through music. I utilize Engin Isin’s performative dimension of citizenship (2017) to investigate such forms of insurgent citizenship as they evolve in social and cultural peripheries of the contemporary arts and culture industry in the city of Dresden, Germany to identify the pathways they open to socio-political participation and autonomy for refugees.

While Germany understands itself as a nation of culture, cultural policy unevenly addresses ...

Between Idealization Of A Martyr And Critic Of A Society: Analysis Of Axel Corti’S "Der Fall Jägerstätter", Jakub Gortat Oct 2019

Between Idealization Of A Martyr And Critic Of A Society: Analysis Of Axel Corti’S "Der Fall Jägerstätter", Jakub Gortat

Journal of Religion & Film

The new film approach to the figure of Franz Jägerstätter by Terrence Mallick in 2019 is an occasion to take a critical look at the first movie about the Catholic martyr that was made by the Austrian director Axel Corti in 1971. Although the movie turned out be to a huge success and until now is viewed as one of the turning points in coming to terms with the Nazi past in the Austrian film history, it idealizes, against the director’s intentions, the protagonist and preserves some of the characteristic elements of the history discourse of the times it ...

Window Shopping With Duchamp: Commodity Aesthetics Delayed In Glass, J. Brandon Pelcher Sep 2019

Window Shopping With Duchamp: Commodity Aesthetics Delayed In Glass, J. Brandon Pelcher

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

While Marcel Duchamp’s readymades are consistently framed as a challenge to the art world and the concept of art itself, they also challenge the world from which they were taken, the world of commodities. Readymades subject the commodity to the world of aesthetics in order to more fully investigate the commodity aesthetics of both the commodity form itself and it presentation in shop window displays. This critical investigation complicates the role of commodity aesthetics and consumption as well as their formation of the consumer-subject in Fordist capitalism. The readymade can be seen both as an important forerunner to the ...

Nationalism And Education: A Case Study Of Germany And Japan, Sarah Vrtiska Jul 2019

Nationalism And Education: A Case Study Of Germany And Japan, Sarah Vrtiska

Honors Theses, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

In this piece I ask the question: How has education contributed to the formation or prevention of nationalism in Germany and Japan? In examining this, after defining the standard conceptions of nationalism, I apply these definitions to pre-war and post-war Germany and Japan. Ultimately, I conclude that the goals of education, concepts of national identity that are taught, history curricula, and control of education all historically have the potential to contribute to the rise of nationalism within a country. Based on these fields, I find that although there are similar nationalist trends in both countries during the pre-war period, in ...

How Dumbledore Saved Europe: A Comparison Of Fascist Rhetoric In European History And In The Harry Potter Franchises, Emma Pederson, Natalie Rice Jun 2019

How Dumbledore Saved Europe: A Comparison Of Fascist Rhetoric In European History And In The Harry Potter Franchises, Emma Pederson, Natalie Rice

MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference

In recent years, the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise has seen a resurgence with the release of the first two Fantastic Beasts films and accompanying screenplays. As parallels have been drawn between Voldemort’s Death Eaters and Nazis, it is time to examine the relationship between Gellert Grindelwald and real-life fascists. Through such a comparison, we can see common rhetoric in both real and fictional fascism.

Gellert Grindelwald and Albus Dumbledore have not only a Nazi-like goal of racial purity, but employ Nazi-like language to defend themselves. Related fascist rhetoric is woven throughout other European history, particularly in the ...

Oral Explanations In University Teaching: The Role Of Projector Constructions In Spoken German, Anna Saller Jun 2019

Oral Explanations In University Teaching: The Role Of Projector Constructions In Spoken German, Anna Saller

Colorado Research in Linguistics

This study explores the nature of oral explanations in German university teaching and focuses particularly on projections, which are a widely-used feature in order to guide the students’ attention. Projector constructions facilitate the production and organization of complex statements and allow the speaker to draw the students’ attention to crucial pieces of information. Furthermore, projections facilitate the drawing of inferences for the listener: The projector phrase opens up semantic and syntactic slots that need to be filled, so that the number of possible contents to follow is restricted. In German, the placement of the conjugated verb in the projected unit ...

L'Évolution De La Présence Et La Reconnaissance Des Afro-Allemand(E)S En Allemagne, De La Colonisation Jusqu’À Nos Jours, Oumou-Hani Zakaria

Honors Theses

The history of the presence of Afro-Germans in Germany is a complex path that goes back thousands of years ago. Nevertheless, the fight to be recognized as real Germans was only taken serious in 1980, with the arrival of Audre Lorde, an American writer, feminist, womanist, librarian, and civil rights activist, to Germany. Audre Lorde initiated the Afro-German movement with Afro-German women including May Ayim, Dagmar Schultz, Katharina Oguntoye, Ika Hügel-Marshall, and many others. Before her arrival, Afro-Germans were alienated from society and were only referred to as “war babies,” “occupation babies,” and many other racist names. So this movement ...

Impossible Communities In Prague’S German Gothic: Nationalism, Degeneration, And The Monstrous Feminine In Gustav Meyrink’S Der Golem (1915), Amy Michelle Braun May 2019

Impossible Communities In Prague’S German Gothic: Nationalism, Degeneration, And The Monstrous Feminine In Gustav Meyrink’S Der Golem (1915), Amy Michelle Braun

Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation investigates the contribution of Gustav Meyrink’s best-selling novel The Golem/Der Golem (1915) to the second revival of the international Gothic. While previous scholarship suggests that this genre disappeared from the German literary landscape in the 1830s, I interpret The Golem as a Gothic contribution to the “Prague Novel,” a trend in Prague-based, turn-of-the-twentieth-century German-language literature that found inspiration in the heated sociocultural and political tensions that characterized the milieu.

Structured around the demolition of Prague’s former Jewish ghetto under the auspices of the Finis Ghetto plan, a historic Czech-led urban renewal project that leveled the ...

The Education Of Women Artists In Northern Europe, 1500-1750, Elayna Gladstone May 2019

The Education Of Women Artists In Northern Europe, 1500-1750, Elayna Gladstone

Student Research Submissions

During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, art was primarily commissioned by wealthy patrons for the sake of personal or religious use. Eventually, the creation of the genre portrait came about, and art was beginning to serve purposes other than to satisfy the wealthy patron and the church. As art became more recreational and personal to the common person, women began to train in the arts, and were even able to succeed with their own artistic careers in some cases. This paper covers three women artists from the area of Flanders and Germany, and explores the artistic education they received and ...
