A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr. Apr 2019

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

“Goethe, Faust, And Motherless Creations.” Goethe Yearbook 23 (2016): 59-75., Wendy Nielsen Apr 2019

“Goethe, Faust, And Motherless Creations.” Goethe Yearbook 23 (2016): 59-75., Wendy Nielsen

Wendy Nielsen

“Goethe, Faust, and Motherless Creations” reads the life and work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe alongside the material culture of motherless creations, the automata, androids, and golems that his contemporaries imagined and created. Automata and androids are motherless in the sense that men create them, and they represent an attempt to usurp women’s primary role in reproduction. The manufacture of automata and androids and the pursuit of natural philosophy put male inventors and scientists in reproductive roles, for they sought to overturn the boundary between life and death. Examining Goethe’s relationship to the artificial life forms of his ...

Chronotopes Of Flight From The Red Army In East And West German Feature Film (1950–1970), Jamie Zelechowski Mar 2019

Chronotopes Of Flight From The Red Army In East And West German Feature Film (1950–1970), Jamie Zelechowski

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article investigates the representation of flight from the Red Army (1944/45) in East and West German feature film prior to 1970. Even while refugee figures may abound, the representation of flight appears infrequently in feature film during this period. In order to understand why this is the case as well as how and why flight is actually depicted when it is, I turn to Wolfgang Schleif’s Preis der Nationen/Das Mädchen Marion (Prize of the Nations/The Girl Marion, FRG; 1956) and Martin Eckermann’s television film Wege übers Land (Ways Across the Land, GDR; 1968) and ...

Nicht Der Rede Wert? Zur Vielfalt Der Deutschen Sprache Im Fach Deutsch Als Fremdsprache, Naomi Shafer Jan 2019

Nicht Der Rede Wert? Zur Vielfalt Der Deutschen Sprache Im Fach Deutsch Als Fremdsprache, Naomi Shafer

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine Süß Jan 2019

Aspekte Der Psychoanalyse Und Der Subjektivität In Judith Hermanns Erzählung ‘Sonja’, Martha Christine Süß

Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix Jan 2019

Thematic And Narratological Affinities In George Eliot’S Felix Holt And Theodor Fontane’S Frau Jenny Treibel, Monica Felix

German Journal Sprache Literatur Kultur

This article investigates affinities in George Eliot’s “Felix Holt: the Radical” and Theodor Fontane’s “Frau Jenny Treibel.” Both texts present suggestive narratological and thematic affinities in how the 19th-century female identity is articulated within the socio-political framework of society novels. This analysis interrogates the boundaries of a ‘sentimental education’ to uncover deeper layers distinguishing Bildung from Herzensbildung, thereby placing greater emphasis on women’s romantic education in the public performance of identity.

“[T]here is no private life which has not been determined by a wider public life... ”

-George Eliot, Felix Holt: The Radical

“Männer männlich, Weiber weiblich ...

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr Dec 2018

Five Poems From Miss Suki, Or America Is Not Far By Utz Rachowski, Louise Stoehr

Transference

The five short poems selected from Utz Rachowski’s (1954- ) 2013 volume Miss Suki oder Amerika ist nicht weit! mark a shift in his poetic work. His poetry and prose focus almost exclusively on life in the former German Democratic Republic. During the time the GDR existed, his critical poems were cause for his arrest and imprisonment and eventual exile to West Germany. Rachowski has continued to examine his experiences of life under state oppression, including the ramifications of unification. With the 2013 publication of Miss Suki, Rachowski added a new tone of lightness to his writing, which nevertheless remains ...
