« Je Suis Harki » : Les Sphères De La Mémoire Harkie, Sarah Lettau May 2019

« Je Suis Harki » : Les Sphères De La Mémoire Harkie, Sarah Lettau

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Harkis are Algerian soldiers who fought for the French Army during the Algerian War (1954-1962). Considered traitors in Algeria, thousands of Harkis were massacred following the end of the war.

Those who managed to escape the massacres were repatriated to France, where they were placed primarily in camps with inhumane living conditions. A Harki community managed to form in the camps, and the constrictive nature of the camps led to a push to bring Harki collective memory into the French public sphere.

After the Algerian War was legally recognized as a war in 1999, a "flame of memory" inspired ...

The Subject Of Jouissance: The Late Lacan And Gender And Queer Theories, Frederic C. Baitinger May 2019

The Subject Of Jouissance: The Late Lacan And Gender And Queer Theories, Frederic C. Baitinger

All Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The Subject of Jouissance argues that Lacan’s approach to psychoanalysis, far from being heteronormative, offers a notion of identity that deconstructs gender as a social norm, and opens onto a non-normative theory of the subject (of jouissance) that still remains to be fully explored by feminist, gender, and queer scholars. Drawing mostly on the later Lacan, The Subject of Jouissance shows that by locating the identity of the subject in the singularity of its bodily mode of enjoyment (that Lacan calls “jouissance”), and not in the Imaginary illusions of the ego, nor in the Symbolic social structures, Lacan fosters ...

Crise Linguistique En Algérie: Les Conséquences De L’Arabisation, Lily Keener Apr 2019

Crise Linguistique En Algérie: Les Conséquences De L’Arabisation, Lily Keener

Senior Capstone Theses

This essay details the implementation and eventual failure of the Arabization policies intended to reinstate and reform Arabophone and Islamic culture in Algeria after independence. I lay out the actions taken by the ruling party (the FLN) against the three main languages spoken in Algeria - Algerian Arabic, French, and Berber - through various laws and even in the language of the Algerian constitution. Ultimately, I conclude that the attempted repression of these languages is an injustice against the Algerian people and should desist for the good of the country.

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr. Apr 2019

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa Apr 2019

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

Since the second half of the twentieth century, representations of the Holocaust in all areas of Art have been on the rise. It is not– as it was right after the end of the war –, about sharing an individual recounting of one’s experience in the death camps, or even about giving an opportunity to the witnesses to tell their story, as it was the case after the Jerusalem’s trials. It is now about a mass of references and motifs, used and transformed with more or less skill in pop culture, not only in Europe (as it occurred right ...

(Dis)Embodied Cognition: Phenomenology, Spirit(Ual)Ism, And Performance In Proust, Paul Aarstad Apr 2019

(Dis)Embodied Cognition: Phenomenology, Spirit(Ual)Ism, And Performance In Proust, Paul Aarstad

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

A psychical researcher among Marcel Proust’s contemporaries called belief in the paranormal “the Dreyfus case of science.” References to spirit-life abound in Proust’s fiction, but critics have resisted readings that attend seriously to the numerous references in À la recherche du temps perdu to reincarnation, spirit-possession, and, especially, mediumship. The paper reads them through the lens of long-standing critical controversies, particularly concerning the relationship of Proust’s aesthetics and ontology with those of Henri Bergson and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The paper accepts Nathalie Aubert’s finding in her 2011 essay “Proust et Bergson: La mémoire du corps” that Proust ...

Le Personnel Est Politique: Médias, Esthétique Et Politique De L’Autofiction Chez Christine Angot, Chloé Delaume Et Nelly Arcan, Mercédès Baillargeon

Purdue University Press Book Previews

Reassessing The Neustadt As A Site Of Outstanding Cultural Value, Sophie Higgerson Apr 2019

Reassessing The Neustadt As A Site Of Outstanding Cultural Value, Sophie Higgerson

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis explores the logic of preservation behind the extension of Strasbourg's World Heritage Site to include the Neustadt, a development built by the German administration between 1870 and 1916. Divided into three sections focusing on the Neustadt master plan, the Orangerie/Conseil des XV neighborhood, and the Grande Percée, the paper reframes the interchange of French and German planning practices in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Les Stratégies De L’Activisme Et Les Manifestations Françaises ; Une Étude De Quatrième Génération Par Wendy Delorme Et Bpm Par Robin Campillo, Nat Bush Apr 2019

Les Stratégies De L’Activisme Et Les Manifestations Françaises ; Une Étude De Quatrième Génération Par Wendy Delorme Et Bpm Par Robin Campillo, Nat Bush

Senior Theses and Projects

A society cannot change without inspired individuals who want to fight for it and who can strategize ways to reach their goals, and activism is the most engaging source for young people. Protests reach the news often, but there are other types of activism that work behind the scenes to ensure that everything remains organized. For example, there are meetings in which the activist groups discuss the steps that they plan to take in order for their target audience to understand what they are dissatisfied about. Activism can also take more artistic forms, such as film and literature, which can ...

Dominique Fourcade: Recalculations, James Petterson Mar 2019

Dominique Fourcade: Recalculations, James Petterson

Studies in 20th & 21st Century Literature

This article explores the relationship between poetry, photography and choreography in the writings of contemporary French poet Dominique Fourcade. Close readings of Fourcade’s 2001 M W alongside other of his works reveal some of the fundamental techniques of his writing, founded on formal recalculations sparked by interaction with other art forms, specifically the photography of Barbara Morgan and Isabelle Waternaux and the dance choreography of George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Pina Bausch, Mathilde Monnier and William Forsythe. The analysis also proposes alternative multi-disciplinary directions for the reception of poetry.

Representations Of Immigration In Québécois Film, Roland R. Buchta Mar 2019

Representations Of Immigration In Québécois Film, Roland R. Buchta

Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

Québec is a region where national identity plays a particularly important role, mainly due to its social context, and the historical influence of anglophones on the province’s affairs. This element is reflected in its cinematic productions, as Santoro, Bachand, Desroches and Loiselle stated, “Québec cinema is indeed but the most recent example of the Québécois’ ability to translate their cultural specificity into an enduring and increasingly appreciated source of cultural and economic vitality” (161). Santoro et al further claimed that “Québec cinema is indeed a rich and increasingly diversified art form and has taken its place on the world ...

La Variation De La Morphologie Pronominale Dans Les Variétés Parlées Dans Les Alpes-Maritimes, Robert Mooney Feb 2019

La Variation De La Morphologie Pronominale Dans Les Variétés Parlées Dans Les Alpes-Maritimes, Robert Mooney

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

We examine the pronoun morphology of Occitan dialects in the French Department of Alpes-Maritimes in order to better account for three phenomena that exist in certain Romance varieties: 1) the variable linear orders of clitic pronouns, 2) syncretism and 3) opacity.

We analyse data from the PAM (Parlers des Alpes-Maritimes, Dalbera 1994) in the form of questionnaires that the participant translates from French into his own dialect. We systematically compare the forms of pronouns as well as their linear orders. We compare the approaches proposed to account for these three phenomena in other Romance languages. An approach using morphological models ...

Theater And The Truth: Political And Theatrical Representations Of The 1793 Siege Of Toulon, Chela M. Aufderheide Feb 2019

Theater And The Truth: Political And Theatrical Representations Of The 1793 Siege Of Toulon, Chela M. Aufderheide

James Blair Historical Review

The revolutionary period in France was characterized by great upheavals in theater, politics, and political culture, including the new popularity of théâtre d’actualité, or theater based on current events. This théâtre d’actualité offers a unique source with which to examine the interactions between the political and theatrical spheres at this time. To this effect, I used as a case study the 1793 siege of Toulon, in which republican forces recaptured the city after a royalist uprising. The siege and ensuing victory were frequently referenced in political discourse, and also served as the subject matter for a profusion of ...

Intertexts Of The Ecological: Literary Space Revisited In Yanick Lahens's Bain De Lune, Jason Herbeck

Jason Herbeck

The opening lines of Yanick Lahens’s Bain de lune (2014) find an unidentified narrator lying on a beach not far from the coastal community of Anse Bleue, staring at the worn, muddy boots of the man who has just discovered her lifeless body. As her narrative reveals, a hurricane has devastated the region over the past three days, and, in the wake of the storm, the deceased protagonist tries to piece together the fragmented memories of her life as a means of determining how she has ended up dead on the sand. From the very beginning of Lahens’s ...
