The Hunter Vs. The Hunted, Julia Palozzi Aug 2018

The Hunter Vs. The Hunted, Julia Palozzi

Dissenting Voices

I share this story to illustrate an example of psychological sexual coercion and the power dynamics that allow such coercion to exist. We must understand that the root of this problem lies in the nature of power between men and women. I do not think that these dynamics are born to us naturally. The biology of men and women has nothing to do with the nature of the power dynamics that can exist between them. This power dynamic is one that has been ingrained into our society through generations of separating the public and private spheres of work.

Sexual Objectification Of Female Bodies In Beauty Pageants, Pornography, And Media, Kelsey Wright Sep 2017

Sexual Objectification Of Female Bodies In Beauty Pageants, Pornography, And Media, Kelsey Wright

Dissenting Voices

Have you ever watched a beauty pageant contest? What about mainstream pornography? These two capitalistic industries continue to enforce the misogynistic view that the female body is to be consumed by the male population. I argue that the societal standards we commonly consider to be the norm affect female embodiment and what it means to be a woman in contemporary society. Beauty standards, gender roles, sexualization, objectification, and the male gaze all point towards this ideology that the female body is to be consumed by men. I argue we need to abandon these societal standards that control female bodies and ...

Deconstructing The Nuclear Family Through Adoption, Julia Degroff Sep 2017

Deconstructing The Nuclear Family Through Adoption, Julia Degroff

Dissenting Voices

Adoption tends to be described as an alternative form of family, but for a mother or father, family has no restrictions. This paper looks at the ways adoption deconstructs and recreates the idea of family. Existing research across fields of study surrounding family fails to cover specific research on adoption and lacks the research that looks at the ways adoption and other alternative family forms disrupt and distort the biological family unit. The word “family” can be defined in many different ways, and is a specific and individualistic concept. However, within the cultural sphere of family, biogenic families tend to ...

Make America Curious Again: Integrating Feminism Into Undergraduate International Relations Studies, Tambria Schroeder Sep 2017

Make America Curious Again: Integrating Feminism Into Undergraduate International Relations Studies, Tambria Schroeder

Dissenting Voices

The systems and institutions that exist in our country are strategically designed to maintain patriarchy and privileged masculinity. Complacency of the majority ensures that these structures remain intact. In this paper, I consider the exclusion of feminism and discussions of gender from undergraduate political science and international studies courses, and why it is critical for us to be paying attention to it now perhaps more than ever before. I suggest that this exclusion only helps to ensure that patriarchal dominance continues into the future. We have the potential to change by adopting a more curious mindset.

Lesbians, Masculinities, And Privilege: The Privileging Of Gender And The Gendering Of Sexuality, Brooke E. Love Aug 2016

Lesbians, Masculinities, And Privilege: The Privileging Of Gender And The Gendering Of Sexuality, Brooke E. Love

Dissenting Voices

Though LGBTQ individuals, experiences, and communities have been increasingly recognized as valuable subjects of research, the existing body of research on and about this population is still significantly lacking. In a field so young and full of controversy, it is vital that research be done that gives voice and agency to LGBTQ individuals, their experiences and lifestyles. This paper will introduce readers to the concept of “female masculinity” and, specifically, the complicated relationships many lesbian identities have with different configurations of masculinity. I will introduce the concepts of “butch” lesbian identities and “femme” lesbian identities as well as their relation ...

The Color Of Postfeminism: Representations Of Black And White Women In Popular Music Videos, Anna M. Walser Sep 2015

The Color Of Postfeminism: Representations Of Black And White Women In Popular Music Videos, Anna M. Walser

Dissenting Voices

The sexualization and objectification of women in popular music videos has acted as a consistent obstacle for the feminist movement. Within a postfeminist framework -- postfeminism being a rejection of feminist ideas and a belief that the activist feminism of years past no longer serves a purpose -- music video viewers are able to see both positive advances and negative reversals. One problem often associated with the postfeminist movement is the lack of acknowledgment of race, as has historically been the case for the feminist movement, white, middle-class women are almost always the largest representation, with non-white women more often than not ...

Interrogations Of Community From The Women And Gender Studies Program At The College At Brockport, Ashley Mckay Jul 2013

Interrogations Of Community From The Women And Gender Studies Program At The College At Brockport, Ashley Mckay

Dissenting Voices

This project draws from hybrid methodologies to enact an interdisciplinary analysis of students’ articulations of community within the Women and Gender Studies Program at The College at Brockport. In order to subvert traditional colonizing research power dynamics, my own positionality as a trans* masculine queer identified person is contextualized within broader networks of power throughout. To highlight the creativity and recognition in relationships, I deploy and document “community” not to collapse any particular identities or other distinctions that exist among my co-participants, but to invite a revaluing of conventional boundaries and a rethinking about how knowledge is produced.
