Love Poems For Photographs And Other Writings, Erin Francis O'Leary

Senior Projects Fall 2016

This project is a collection of writings about photography that vary stylistically from traditional academic essays to more formally imaginative pieces. It is structured around the understanding of art criticism as not solely a passive response to the artworks on which it is focused, but as a productive and valuable artistic gesture that exists independently of its source materials. Art criticism, though concerned primarily with the external, can be understood (also) as an autobiographical effort.

The Family Arcane, Caridad J. Cole Jan 2016

The Family Arcane, Caridad J. Cole

Senior Projects Fall 2016

The Family Arcane is a collection of interconnected short stories that explores the ways in which people (and a few other beings) interact with the world without all of the cognitive tools to do so. For example, a child trying to understand maturity, an emotionally stunted teenager navigating social norms, a woman who feels like a robot, and any other outsider, can be a member of the family. These short stories seek to inspire those with the common fear of being different, and ask the psychological and sociological questions that come up every day but often go unspoken.

Narrativizing Pain: Reconstructing Selfhood Through Memory And Language, Erin Joy Carden

Senior Projects Spring 2016

The three female authors I study for this paper- Alicia Kozameh, Alicia Partnoy, and Nora Strejilevich- are all survivors of the Argentinean military Junta’s state-inflicted terror and who have written, with great beauty, about the horrors they experienced as political prisoners during the Dirty War. Through the written word these survivors gain the power to reclaim their human dignity and a sense of distinctive selfhood which were severely damaged through trauma and torture. Through analyzing four works: Steps Under Water(1996) by Alicia Kozameh, The Little School(1986) and Revenge of the Apple(1999) by Alicia Partnoy, and A ...

Jean Genet, author ofThe Balcony, and Dante Alighieri, author of Inferno, have more in common than you might think. For one thing, they were both obsessed with death.

The Vestibule (a devised theater piece) was made to examine this obsession with (and fear of) death further.

Art is a tool we can use to confront our fear of death. All people fear death.
