A Continuous Present, Margaret L. Lundberg Apr 2017

A Continuous Present, Margaret L. Lundberg

Margaret Lundberg

The readers of a text are—in many ways—also its authors, with the act of reading creating a dialog between a text already written and a text generated through reader response, creating a community along the boundary between author and reader. To illustrate that boundary, I situated myself—through my research and writing—as a responding audience to nineteenth-century Iowa farm wife Emily Hawley Gillespie, as she is revealed through the pages of her thirty-year diary. Through a constructivist paradigm, the methodology of philosophical hermeneutics, new historicism, and the creative vehicle of fiction, I entered Gillespie’s text to ...

Damar On Fridays, Maja Sadikovic

Theses

Abstract

These poems are about the first hand witnessing of the Balkan war and its visceral repercussions, ripping of families across generations and continents due to religious intolerance, and an identity crisis within the diaspora of the former Yugoslav people. They interact with appeals of loss, in terms of bodies, memory, and material, despair within the identity of the self in and outside of religion, and the perception of love and belonging, but not necessarily in that order. They are largely inspired by victim story-telling, translations of conversations with natives of the former Yugoslavia and their children, and ramifications of ...

Morehouse College Glee Club Performs "Iya Mi" (My Mother) By Jude Nwankwo, David Morrow, Jude Nwankwo, Aaron Carter-Enyi

Africana Digital Ethnography Project

In the Fall of 2016, the Morehouse College Music Department issued a call for early-career Nigerian composers to submit applications for consideration. This project builds on the Morehouse College Glee Club’s reputation of performing African choral music under the direction of Wendell Whalum, Uzee Brown, Jr., and David Morrow.

In December 2016, Jude Nwankwo was selected as the inaugural recipient of the award. Mr. Nwankwo is a Lecturer of Music at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Mr. Nwankwo was commissioned to write a three- to five-minute piece for TTBB (male-voice) choir on secular themes in one of Nigeria’s ...

The Policy Of Torches: Chapter I, Evan Frazier Apr 2017

The Policy Of Torches: Chapter I, Evan Frazier

WWU Honors Program Senior Projects

Chapter I: Liberator, is a sample from the rough draft of a novel called “The Policy of Torches.” This historical fiction follows two heroes of the first Cuban rebellion, known as the Ten Years War. Chapter I depicts the historical event that sparked the war known as the “Cry of Yara.” Carlos Céspedes went on to become President of the Cuban revolutionary republic, though he died before the war’s end without friends at the hands of Spanish soldiers. Céspedes’s rise and fall is a central story in The Policy of Torches.
