Queer Hybridity And Performance In The Multimedia Texts Of Arroyo And Lozada, Ed Chamberlain Feb 2019

Queer Hybridity And Performance In The Multimedia Texts Of Arroyo And Lozada, Ed Chamberlain

Ed Chamberlain

In his article "Queer Hybridity and Performance in the Multimedia Texts of Arroyo and Lozada" Ed Chamberlain examines the unconventional writing of Puerto Rican writers Rane Arroyo and Ángel Lozada. Arroyo and Lozada craft texts which can be interpreted as performances and these performative texts blend internet-based writings with more traditional genres including the novel and poetry. Arroyo's and Lozada's stylistic approaches exhibit a queer sensibility which resembles the way in which Latina/o queer people construct and perform their cultural identities. Chamberlain argues that these queer performances suggest we can neither create nor identify absolute truth in ...

“Man Darf Nicht Sagen...”. Kafka’S 1906 Fragment Über Ästhetische Apperception („On Perception“), Jonathan Skolnik

Jonathan Skolnik

Inspired by Scott Spector’s analysis of the Prague Circle, this article investigates
how Kafka’s fragment “On Perception” (“Über ästhetische Apperception”) might
be viewed as a product of the dialogue between Brod and Kafka. After surveying
how Kafka scholars have framed and tried to apply Kafka’s early text on
aesthetics, the article shows Kafka’s work refuses to engage with the powerful
anti-Jewish tropes of aesthetic theory around 1900 (Weininger) and instead
develops literary themes and techniques that anticipate many aspects of Kafka’s
later literary production

Storm Still: Klartext Und Poesie In Peter Handke's "Immer Noch Sturm", Scott Abbott Aug 2015

Storm Still: Klartext Und Poesie In Peter Handke's "Immer Noch Sturm", Scott Abbott

Scott Abbott

In a play about about the Slovenian minority in Austria, Peter Handke dialectically explores the possibilities of language in the contexts of war and peace. Although the play has been attacked as an act of linguistic nationalism, a careful reading of the play finds it one more document in the author's lifelong commitment to laying bare the coercive structures of language.

Five Poems From Witch In Mourning In Exchanges, Maria-Mercè Marçal, Clyde Moneyhun

Clyde Moneyhun

Maria-Mercè Marçal was born in 1952, in the middle of the fascist dictatorship in Spain, which lasted from the end of the Civil War in 1939 to the death of Francisco Franco in 1975. Marçal writes, “A l’atzar agraeixo tres dons: haver nascut dona, de classe baixa i nació oprimida” [I thank fate for three gifts: having been born a woman, to the lower class, in an oppressed nation], a phrase that is still famous in Catalan graffiti today.

Electronic Journals, Prestige, And The Economics Of Academic Journal Publishing, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek, Joshua Jia

Tötösy de Zepetnek, Steven & Totosy de Zepetnek, Steven

In their article "Electronic Journals, Prestige, and the Economics of Academic Journal Publishing" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek and Joshua Jia discuss the current state of the academic journal publishing industry. The current state of the industry is an oligopoly based on a double appropriation model where academics produce work for at no cost only to have publishers earn significant profit margins by selling the work back to academics. Publishers are able to do this given the price inelasticity and weak bargaining power of its main consumer, university libraries. Publishers' ability to increase prices is also supported by what the authors ...

Nádas's A Book Of Memories And Central European Journeys, Steven Tötösy De Zepetnek

Tötösy de Zepetnek, Steven & Totosy de Zepetnek, Steven

In his article "Nádas's A Book of Memories and Central European Journeys" Steven Tötösy de Zepetnek discusses theoretical, literary, political, social, etc., aspects of travel in Péter Nádas's novel. "Travel" in the novel represents both a conceptual and lived experience at a time when travel between the East and the West in Europe was restricted and when a person hailing from the "East" considered a journey to the West a complex and ideological matter. Further, the aspect of urbanity, that is, cultural and social spaces and the journey and what such entails in terms of ideology, points of ...

Obscurity In Medieval Texts, Lucie Doležalová, Jeff Rider, Alessandro Zironi Dec 2012

Obscurity In Medieval Texts, Lucie Doležalová, Jeff Rider, Alessandro Zironi

Jeff Rider

Modern readers of medieval texts often find them obscure. Some of this obscurity is accidental and inevitable due to the historical and cultural distance that separates modern readers from medieval authors, but medieval readers and authors also appear to have simply had a higher tolerance for textual obscurity than we do and even to have viewed obscurity as desirable and a virtue. They did not believe that obscurity could ever be eradicated and were not scared of the indescribable, indivisible, and ungraspable; they accepted reality as complex and ultimately unintelligible. Obscurity was not simply a riddle to be solved. It ...

Melusine; Or The Noble History Of Lusignan, Donald Maddox, Sara Sturm-Maddox Dec 2011

Melusine; Or The Noble History Of Lusignan, Donald Maddox, Sara Sturm-Maddox

Donald Maddox

Jean d’Arras’s splendid late fourteenth-century prose romance Melusine – written for Jean de Berry, the brother of King Charles V of France – is one of the most significant and complex literary works of the later Middle Ages. The author, promising to tell us “how the noble and powerful fortress of Lusignan in Poitou was founded by a fairy,” writes a ceaselessly astonishing account of the origins of the powerful feudal dynasty of the Lusignans in southwestern France, which flourished in western Europe and the Near East during the age of the Crusades. The spellbinding story of the destinies of ...

Little Germans On The Prairie: Colonial Thought And German Settlement Of The United States In Wilhelmine Youth Literature, Maureen Gallagher

Maureen O. Gallagher
