Ramping Down Chinese Commercial Cyber Espionage, Emilio Iasiello Dec 2015

Ramping Down Chinese Commercial Cyber Espionage, Emilio Iasiello

Emilio Iasiello

While detractors believe that commercial cyber espionage hasn’t really stopped, recent Chinese efforts show a government trying to get a handle on its large spying apparatus that could include hired and independent contractors acting autonomously in addition to its other resources. While complete cessation may never occur, significant timely reduction demonstrates Beijing’s willingness to work with the United States as a partner and not a pariah, and provides a foundation from which the two governments can move forward on other cyber security areas where incongruity persists.

Back To The Roots: Rise Of Labour Resistance In Chinese Workers, Winnie Hui Ni Khoo

Winnie Hui Ni Khoo

This paper aims to study and understand how the changing market conditions and state reforms in the last three decades could have led to the direct or indirect rise of labour resistance such as increased in collective resistance like labour protests and unrest as well as passive individual resistance like workers suicides, high turnover rates and migrant labour shortages in China (Cai 2002; Chan 2014; Elfstrom & Kuruvilla 2014; Friedman 2014).

Danwei System In China And Its Impact On The Daily Life Of Urban Residents After Reform, Luo Li

Luo Li

Danwei system is a very unique phenomenon in China’s urban areas. There is no doubt that set up after the establishment of new China, danwei exerted its social function strongly. It is not only being the tool for national integration, but easing the pressure of unemployment and providing social welfare as well. However, there were few researches on Chinese danwei system. From Intelligentsia To Cultural Entrepreneurs – The Wang Shuo Phenomenon & China’S Changing Values, Weixian Huang Jan 2014

From Intelligentsia To Cultural Entrepreneurs – The Wang Shuo Phenomenon & China’S Changing Values, Weixian Huang

Weixian Huang

Wang Shuo has been called the “most important publishing phenomenon since Mao” and his career has been decorated with a series of firsts – the first “wenhua getihu” (cultural entrepreneur) in China’s literary world, the first to embark on rampant self-promotion, and the first to receive royalties for his books. But he became a phenomenon in China's cultural landscape because of the huge changes occurring between the late 80s and early 90s. This review examines the Wang Shuo Phenomenon and what the commercialisation of culture entailed.

Urban Property Development In Malaysia: The Impact Of Chinese And Malay Conceptions Of Space, Hans-Dieter Evers Sep 2013

Urban Property Development In Malaysia: The Impact Of Chinese And Malay Conceptions Of Space, Hans-Dieter Evers

Hans-Dieter Evers

In the past 30 years Peninsular Malaysia has undergone rapid urbanization from 34% urban population in 1980 to 71% in 2010. This has created an unprecedented building boom, leading to the rise of large construction companies. This chapter is going to argue that next to the political economy of ethnicity the cultural conceptions of space will have a decisive impact on the process of urbanization. The physical city-scape of Malaysian urban areas in turn will determine the everyday life and the employment opportunities of all Malaysians.

Chinese Diaspora As People Of Their Own Countries And Chinese Philosophy As A World Philosophy, Chenyang Li, Hong Xiao Jun 2013

Chinese Diaspora As People Of Their Own Countries And Chinese Philosophy As A World Philosophy, Chenyang Li, Hong Xiao

Hong Xiao

In this essay, we follow Tang Junyi's lead in exploring issues related to Chinese diaspora and Chinese philosophy. While we largely endorse Tang's call for overseas Chinese to establish themselves in their adopted lands, we argue for a more nuanced view of the identity of Chinese people outside China: they not marginalized individuals scattered outside of their "homeland," China, rather they are people legitimately established in their own respective countries. In this connection, we also advance a view of future Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy rooted in China as well as in the world at large. In ...

Chinese Reverse Mergers, Accounting Regimes, And The Rule Of Law In China, Benjamin A. Templin Jan 2011

Chinese Reverse Mergers, Accounting Regimes, And The Rule Of Law In China, Benjamin A. Templin

Benjamin A. Templin

In 2010, federal regulators and politicians became increasingly concerned over the accounting practices of Chinese companies that trade on U.S. stock exchanges. In particular, the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) targeted companies that went public through a process called the reverse merger. The instances of fraud became so widespread, regulators and commentators coined the term Chinese Reverse Merger (“CRM”) in order to describe a sector where investors assume the risk of accounting irregularities. Although CRMs must comply with international accounting standards, a weak rule of law in China has resulted in poor implementation and enforcement of its accounting regime ...

European Policies On Land Compensation And Support For Displaced Rural Workers: Relevance To China, Mel Cousins, Zhihui Wu, Jean-Phillipe Lhernould, Malgosia Rusewicz, Simon Roberts

Mel Cousins

This report examines the position of farmers who have lost their land (or displaced rural workers) in China. It studies policies adopted in three EU countries (France, Poland and the UK) (i) to provide compensation for land which has been compulsorily purchased; and (ii) to provide social policy support to disaplaced rural workers. It draws out the possible implications of these EU experiences for China

From Traditional To Today: Revelation From Chinese Gardendesign, Bo Yang, N J. Volkman Jan 2010

From Traditional To Today: Revelation From Chinese Gardendesign, Bo Yang, N J. Volkman

Bo Yang

China, like many other nations, struggled in the twentieth century with defining an indigenous landscape design tradition. This was particularly true in addressing urban open space design after China implemented the Open Door Policy in the late 1970s, when Chinese garden design traditions became largely neglected. The objective of this study is to determine whether the traditional design approach could still effectively serve as modern design inspiration. Built upon a previous study by Wu (1999), our study is a reflective critique on modern Chinese urban public space design. We compare major types of traditional and modern Chinese urban open spaces ...
