Introduction: What Is “Creative Making As Creative Writing”?, Kathi Berens Sep 2019

Introduction: What Is “Creative Making As Creative Writing”?, Kathi Berens

Kathi Berens

This special issue of the Journal of Creative Writing Studies centers on how creative writing changes when writers actively engage computers as nonhuman collaborators in “creative making.” Using examples from McGurl’s The Program Era, Emily Dickinson, and the crowdsourced “translation” of Melville’s classic into Emoji Dick, Berens suggests that creative writing methods have long been procedural and technologic.

There are many forms of creative making. This special issue features creative writers that

  • Write code to output novels
  • Redefine how we think of writing’s “container”
  • Demonstrate aspects of the digital-first, multimodal writing classroom
  • Modify or remix existing artworks ...

Community-Based Museum Ecologies: Public Doors And Windows And Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (‘The New Patrons’), Mark W. Rectanus

Mark W. Rectanus

A growing number of artist-led initiatives and para-institutional organizations are creating community-based projects that signal the emergence of alternative museum ecologies. This article will examine two initiatives, Public Doors and Windows (PDW) and Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (NC) (‘The New Patrons’) that reflect a diverse range of practices that contribute to, or create, museum ecologies outside the physical and conceptual spaces of museums. These museum ecologies also contribute to discourses on the participatory museum and intersect with experiments in community engagement and social practice. Although they may have distinct conceptual points of departure, the diverse institutional platforms and initiatives of PDW ...

Artists, Debt, And Global Activism, Mark W. Rectanus Dec 2017

Artists, Debt, And Global Activism, Mark W. Rectanus

Mark W. Rectanus

This article examines how artists, activism, and works of art may contribute to a more textured understanding of debt in contemporary society and culture. The diversity of aesthetic practices and range of strategic interventions in which artists are organizers and activists are manifest in the Global Ultra Luxury Faction (G.U.L.F.), advocacy initiatives by Working Artists and the Greater Economy (W.A.G.E.), and alternative, trans-local projects such as the Arts Collaboratory. These activist interventions provide the context for an examination of how artists have seized upon discourses related to debt and finance to produce works that ...

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Christopher Strople Oct 2017

(Im)Possible Identity: Autoethnographic (Re)Presentations, Seungho Moon, Christopher Strople

Seungho Moon

In this paper, we examine experience, identity, and their intersections. Working from an autoethnographic positionality, we investigate the insufficiencies of language and the limitations of any given researcher with an intent to address multiple realities and their respective interpretations of meaning. Autoethnographic narratives with the use of visual, written, and multimedia representations further acknowledge the dilemmas of qualitative researchers when they cannot fully describe subjectivities in research. What is deemed to be valid research is often indicative of a theoretical framework that aggressively seeks to invalidate other perspectives and ways of knowing. Thus, we create research spaces by employing counter-narratives ...

Masculine Regeneration And The Attenuated Body In The Early Works Of Nandalal Bose, Niharika Dinkar Aug 2017

Masculine Regeneration And The Attenuated Body In The Early Works Of Nandalal Bose, Niharika Dinkar

Niharika Dinkar

In 2008, the works of the Bengali artist Nandalal Bose (1882-1966) enjoyed a rare North American museum tour, first at the San Diego Museum of Art and then at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In this first major international excursion, Bose‟s works were celebrated as an exemplar of the new modern visual language adopted by nationalist artists as they rejected Europeanized academic techniques in vogue around the turn of the twentieth century. Along with stalwarts like Abanindranath Tagore, Asit Haldar and Kshitindranath Majumdar, the ‘swadeshi’ (indigenous) artists marked an emphatic turn to revive an „Indian‟ aesthetic that has been ...

Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar Aug 2017

Private Lives And Interior Spaces: Raja Ravi Varma's Scholar Paintings, Niharika Dinkar

Niharika Dinkar

Between 1900 and 1904, the celebrated Indian academic painter Raja Ravi Varma painted two depictions of men reading (plate 1 and plate 2). The works are unusual, so much so, as to be quite unrecognizable from the mythological paintings and princely portraits that earned Ravi Varma his reputation with patrons and clients. Ravi Varma was best known for his paintings of lovelorn women gazing comely at the viewer and although men had featured in several commissioned portraits they were rarely presented as idealised figures. His sketchbooks feature several examples of men in everyday scenes, so it is evident that he ...

Water Being Water, Ronald R. Geibert Jul 2017

Water Being Water, Ronald R. Geibert

Ronald Geibert

IQ. DNA. MRI. FYI. In an ever-changing world, we find ourselves conversing with abbreviated acronyms and phrases. They drive today's economy, political agenda, and water cooler chitchat. They define our use of resources and the attention given to matters. Who we are, or think we are, are wrapped around their brevity. In our hurried attempt to sort through the complexities of life we use them to only answer the obvious-How? Unfortunately, an equally important question, Why? is often ignored. The solving of the how of things has generally been left to the scientists and the reasons as to the ...

The Car Park, Dave Colangelo Apr 2017

The Car Park, Dave Colangelo

Dave Colangelo

This essay uses the work of Marc Augé as a lens through which to view the supermodern urban space, and how the concept of place is manufactured and negotiated. The author focuses on a car park to elucidate these themes, and agrees with Augé, who claims that non-places such as car parks fail to create identity or relations.

Disrupting The City: Using Urban Screens To Remediate Public Space, Jean Dubois, Dave Colangelo, Claude Fortin Apr 2017

Disrupting The City: Using Urban Screens To Remediate Public Space, Jean Dubois, Dave Colangelo, Claude Fortin

Dave Colangelo

For over a decade, human-computer interaction (HCI) research placed a great deal of emphasis on studying interaction, engagement, and appropriative practices in online technology-mediated social environments. Moving forward, however, we see computing systems increasingly designed to support digitally-augmented face-to-face interactions in public settings. As far back as the nineteen seventies, new media artists anticipated this interactive potential of digital public displays to foster new forms of situated interactions in urban space, quite distinct from mobile computing in that they altogether exclude online connections or exchanges. Drawing on examples of practice, this paper discusses and show-cases some of the key creative ...

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo Apr 2017

Curating Massive Media, Dave Colangelo

Dave Colangelo

The European Union’s media art initiative Connecting Cities and New York-based Streaming Museum are two recent examples of curatorial models that operate through large, networked, digital displays. This growing exhibition category combines expressive media architecture and telecommunication elements to engage ‘trans-local’ sites and diverse publics in complex media spaces. By investigating the confluence of exhibition making, public art and urban experience, this article explores the relationship between spectacle and criticality with respect to shifting notions of space, identity and ‘the common’. Note: At the time of writing, Dave Colangelo was affiliated with Ryerson University.

Again, With Feeling! [Exhibition Catalogue], Dave Colangelo Apr 2017

Again, With Feeling! [Exhibition Catalogue], Dave Colangelo

Dave Colangelo

Again, With Feeling! presents the work of artists whose visions are injected with properties of pattern, repetition, and appropriation. Taking cues from the everyday, the works displayed show new incarnations or morphs of their originals. This multidisciplinary show explores the ‘re’-mixing, producing, or contextualizing of an original, whether through motif, object or experience. By re-negotiating the terms around their borrowed imagery or performance, these artists present us with a fresh composition of a thing we’ve seen before.
