Preservation Outreach and Workshops

Law collections pose some unique problems in terms of their physical care due to filing and updating practices, use patterns and special binding structures such as loose-leafs and pocket parts. This workshop is designed to address specific preservation needs of law collections through lecture, demonstration and hands-on opportunities. Participants will learn the fundamentals of book repair, treatment options and decision-making, and preservation best practices. Emphasis will be placed on moving knowledge into practice through guidelines for establishing institution-appropriate in house book repair programs, by training the trainers in basic book repair techniques and providing all participants with a start-up tool ...

Rhetoric As Collective Ethos: From Classical Chinese Texts To Postmodern Corporate Images , Wei Yong-Kang

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the question of how to position ethos in rhetorical theory and practice by looking, mainly, at three areas: classical Chinese rhetoric, Web design, and the construction of corporate images in America after 9/11. In traditional Western rhetoric, ethos is perceived to be the appeal of one's personal character, with a vocabulary heavily steeped in individualism and self-representation. In the dissertation I argue for an alternative understanding of ethos, pointing out that ethos is essentially an invocation of cultural forces, with which rhetors not only identify themselves but also, through such identification, achieve their rhetorical purposes ...

Factors that contribute to artisan sustainability are of critical importance to the world's artisans who depend on hand-produced textiles for income and livelihood, and for whom textile production is closely intertwined with cultural identity. Navajo weavers have processed and woven the wool of Navajo-Churro sheep into textiles for more than 350 years. Navajo-Churro sheep, destroyed to reduce over grazing and crossbred to near extinction, are being restored to the Navajo Nation.
