Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers Dec 2002

Donatello’S David: The Putti Speak, Sally A. Struthers

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

As the first approaching life-sized, freestanding, sensuous, bronze nude since Antiquity, Donatello’s bronze David is a critical monument of the Italian Renaissance. Exhibition Notes, Number 19, Summer 2002. Beginning in late February and continuing throughout the remainder of the semester, Wendy Ewald visited Michelle Silvia’s classroom of special–education students at the Carl G. Lauro Memorial Elementary School in Providence. The photographs and videos of the children learning to read and the patterns used in classroom lessons are the result of a three-way collaboration— teacher, students, and artist. The following questions were posed to Wendy Ewald and Michelle Silvia by David Henry, Head of Education at The RISD Museum.

Journals

Exhibition Notes, Number 20, Fall 2002. The Written Word brings together pages from medieval manuscripts and early printed works, giving a sample of the various types of books created between 1100 and 1550. Individual pages were a popular way, especially in the earlier part of the 20th century, for museums and libraries to acquire representative collections, and many of The RISD Museum’s manuscript leaves were acquired as such a group in 1943.

The Power Of The Urban Canvas: Paint, Politics, And Mural Art Policy, Maura E. Greaney Sep 2002

The Power Of The Urban Canvas: Paint, Politics, And Mural Art Policy, Maura E. Greaney

New England Journal of Public Policy

In cities across America, outdoor mural paintings have brought public art to the urban landscape. Paint and politics have been splashed upon city walls for decades, replacing bleak, often graffitied, exteriors with vibrant color. But this transformation runs deeper than the artistry of the murals; the real works of art are the changes these collaborative projects inspire within communities. Mural projects mobilize communities to articulate dreams, express frustrations, and most importantly, consider strategies for change. Thus, they are a worthy consideration for public policymakers. This case study traces the contemporary mural movement in three cities: Boston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles ...

Care Of Quilts-Storage And Display , Shirley Niemeyer, Patricia Cox Crews

Faculty Publications - Textiles, Merchandising and Fashion Design

Antique textiles, including quilts, are very fragile. Excessive handling and washing can hasten deterioration. Light quickly fades colors and weakens natural fibers. Careful control of handling, storage, and display conditions can prolong the life of quilts.
