The Story Of The Sarajevo Haggada, Kemal Bakaršić Dec 1995

The Story Of The Sarajevo Haggada, Kemal Bakaršić

Judaica Librarianship

The story of the rescue of Sarajevo's Haggada codex during the Second World War was put together first by checking archives and other reliable sources, and thereafter contrasting the findings with the legend itself. It appears that a fictional story has filled a gap in the historical record of the postwar years; the legend has protected persons involved in the salvation of the Haggada.

Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem De Koonig, Jud Yalkut Nov 1995

Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem De Koonig, Jud Yalkut

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

While the words of figurative art and abstract expressionism may seem to be eons apart for the average viewer, it was the premise of "Figuration/Abstraction: Fairfield Porter/Willem de Kooning" to explore, in the worlds of curator David Leach, "a shared attitude regarding the essentials of image making." In the collision of realism and abstraction which highlighted a long period of East Coast painting characterized by these two major figures. Leach has seen a love of color and "a strong interest in shape" as well as "a love for the fast-moving gestural mark."

Dance Of Dreams, Michael Creger Jun 1995

Dance Of Dreams, Michael Creger

Dissertations and Theses

It seems that the world does not exist in the way that we perceive it. Among the reasons for this are both the inaccuracy of the information gathered by our senses, and the cultural and linguistic structures through which we interpret this sensory information. This thesis and this group of sculptures, exhibited in the Autzen Gallery April 17 - May 10, 1995, are an attempt to address these issues and to point in a direction which may lead to greater understanding of the world and our place within it. Using primarily welded steel, and building from a foundation based on simple ...

Alterations, Edith Kay Slusarenko May 1995

Alterations, Edith Kay Slusarenko

Dissertations and Theses

My work is not about making big declamatory statements. It's about looking around within my home environment and noticing something and thinking about it. At times (it) is noticed by me as I am passing by a storefront window or browsing through a second-hand store. I never have a clue to what I am looking for until I see it and buy it. Many times I will live with the object for years before deciding to use it as part of my art. Yet when I decide to use the object(s) I find it important to understand how ...

Female Millworkers And The Mechanization Of Textile Production: The Boston Manufacturing Company Of Waltham, Massachusetts, 1813 To 1822, Lois Bayer Gonzales Apr 1995

Female Millworkers And The Mechanization Of Textile Production: The Boston Manufacturing Company Of Waltham, Massachusetts, 1813 To 1822, Lois Bayer Gonzales

American Studies ETDs

When the Boston Manufacturing Company of Waltham, Massachusetts developed mechanized cotton textile production between 1850 and 1821, female millworkers had the opportunity to gain mechanical expertise and utilize it to overcome low wages and subordination. Since management systematically used the two mills to test new machine designs, female operatives played an important role in evaluating and improving industrial technology.

This study follows the development of machinery and women's careers as revealed in the company's surviving payroll ledgers. To identify the social characteristics of the work force, the majority of the 616 millworkers employed between 1817 to 1822 were ...
