How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D. Oct 2019

How To Help When It Hurts? Think Systemic, Corey L. Wrenn Ph.D.

Corey Lee Wrenn, PhD

To resolve a moral dilemma created by the rescue of carnivorous species from exploitative situations who must rely on the flesh of other vulnerable species to survive, Cheryl Abbate applies the guardianship principle in proposing hunting as a case-by-case means of reducing harm to the rescued animal as well as to those animals who must die to supply food. This article counters that Abbate’s guardianship principle is insufficiently applied given its objectification of deer communities. Tom Regan, alternatively, encouraged guardians to think beyond individual dilemmas and adopt a measure of systemic reconstruction, that being the abolition of speciesist institutions ...

Evidence-Based Design: Documenting A Research Experiment In A School Environment With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Julie E. Irish Sep 2019

Evidence-Based Design: Documenting A Research Experiment In A School Environment With Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Julie E. Irish

Julie Elaine Irish

Purpose Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder affecting around 1:59 children. Among other characteristics, children with ASD can be unduly sensitive to elements in the built environment, such as noise or light. Despite this knowledge, to date there has been little evidence-based experimental research investigating how the environment affects them. The purpose of this paper is to conduct an experiment in a school environment with children with ASD and document the process as a model that other researchers could apply to similar studies.

Design/methodology/approach The study focused on whether the application of wayfinding aids (colored ...

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd Aug 2019

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd

Brenda Boyd, PhD

"I learned that the photographers who captured unforgettable images all had some things in common: they seemed to know themselves and people; they had vision, passion, and timing; they had an innate ability to communicate effectively; they took risks; and they learned from their mistakes. I also came to realize that as a result of their unique presence—and often their sacrifice—they made a significant and lasting contribution to our world."

Application Of Problem Based Learning And Mastery Learning To Multimedia Education, Gabriel J. Grant, Dominick E. Fazarro, Luke Steinke Aug 2019

Application Of Problem Based Learning And Mastery Learning To Multimedia Education, Gabriel J. Grant, Dominick E. Fazarro, Luke Steinke

Luke Steinke

The current state of education and the workforce demands a special kind of learner capable of creativity, communicating effectively, analytical skill application, critical thinking, and problem solving. Whereas these skills are important, it is also a necessity for learners to be masters of the knowledge and skills that they have acquired. Traditional educational methods have proven to be somewhat ineffective in producing these results. Problem based learning has proven worthy in handling some of the load, however, mastery learning has been abandoned long ago for reasons in spite of its effectiveness. Through given examples and careful design, the educator will ...

Design Thinking: An Approach With Various Perceptions, Sanne Bouwman, Jesper Voorendt, Boris Eisenbart, Seda Mckilligan

Seda McKilligan

Design Thinking has become increasingly popular across different disciplines. However, what it exactly entails is becoming more and more vague, leading to the term being used for many different approaches and applications. This paper presents an interview study with experts on the application and training of Design Thinking in academia and industry. We find a divide with some seeing Design Thinking as a mere toolbox of methods, while others see it as an umbrella term for the mindset that determines how designers think and act. Subjects unanimously attest the approach large potential to support certain types of businesses, when applied ...

Community-Based Museum Ecologies: Public Doors And Windows And Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (‘The New Patrons’), Mark W. Rectanus

Mark W. Rectanus

A growing number of artist-led initiatives and para-institutional organizations are creating community-based projects that signal the emergence of alternative museum ecologies. This article will examine two initiatives, Public Doors and Windows (PDW) and Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (NC) (‘The New Patrons’) that reflect a diverse range of practices that contribute to, or create, museum ecologies outside the physical and conceptual spaces of museums. These museum ecologies also contribute to discourses on the participatory museum and intersect with experiments in community engagement and social practice. Although they may have distinct conceptual points of departure, the diverse institutional platforms and initiatives of PDW ...

The goal of this design project was to bridge the intentions of mathematical theory and wearable art design by experimenting with the mergence of fractal art theory and the aesthetic of the artwork of Piet Mondrian to create an interesting, complex, and aesthetically pleasing visual form of wearable art. The garment patterns were created using Lectra Modaris and exported into DXF format for motif arrangement in Adobe Illustrator. The designers utilized laser cutting technology to represent the effects of the fractal geometric art and the concept from Mondrian’s painting. The primary colors inspired by the Mondrian’s painting were ...

Synthesis Of Handcrafts And Digital Printing: Creative Sustainable Apparel Design, Ling Zhang, Eulanda A. Sanders

Ling Zhang

Apparel manufacturing processes are one of the most prevalent sources of environmental problems at almost every stage (Gam & Banning, 2011). Some apparel designers/manufacturers are striving to incorporate sustainable and socially responsible processes to create non-toxic, healthy, biodegradable textiles and apparel products. This apparel design project combined handcraft techniques and digital printing to create an eco-friendly line entitled Life of Earth. The design process model used was created by LaBat and Sokoloskwi (1999) including: (a) problem definition and research, (b) creative exploration, and (c) implementation; and the designer included an evaluation step.

Nature's Dna, Ling Zhang, Li Jiang

Ling Zhang

Abstract

The goal of this design was to utilize apparel design as a communication tool to represent the relationship between fashion, the human body, and natural scenery. The question we asked was how we can aesthetically appreciate the natural environment and how can we express the conceptual and material values of the relationship between fashion and natural scenery through the application of digital textile printing, digital pattern making, and textile designs. The designers explored methods for creating textile prints based on photographs of the Upper Antelope Valley from the first author’s own photo collection and utilized the structures of ...

Examination Of Two Decades In Used Clothing Trade: The Case Of The United States And Selected Developed Economies, Youngji Lee, Ling Zhang, Elena E. Karpova

Ling Zhang

This research examined two decades of the U.S. used clothing exports to the world. All countries (209) were classified into four groups based on the level of economic development. Between 1996 and 2012, U.S. used clothing exports shifted away from low-income economies to high-income economies. For the first time, our research demonstrated that the majority of used clothing discarded by American consumers is exported to high-income economies instead of poorest nations of the world. Next, used clothing exports and imports by volume and value in seven high-income countries were analyzed. The high-income countries not only exported but also ...

Eternal Perspective: Synthesis Of Faith And Digital Printing In Creative Apparel Design, Augusta Overy, Ling Zhang

Ling Zhang

This apparel design collection combines origami techniques and digital printing to create an inspiring and faith-filled line entitled Eternal Perspective. The line was inspired by the designer's faith and the importance of always maintaining an eternal perspective. Flat patterning techniques were used to create origami garments which fold into a vortex, spiral, and diagonal stair steps in the completed garments. Two different digital prints were inspired by eternal ideas represented by images which were modified in Adobe Photoshop. The main print motif used is an altered image of stained glass windows on the San Diego LDS temple. A sunflower ...

From Chinese Painting To Wearable Art: The Development Of Wearable Art Design Process Model And Evaluation Methods For Wearable Art Designers, Ling Zhang

Ling Zhang

Wearable art is “art composed of materials structured so they can be worn on the body and that exhibit visually exciting design elements and principles” (Bryant & Hoffman, 1994, P.86). It is a unique (Becker, 1987) and visible symbol that not only depicts the mood of a designer, but also communicates her/his belief, life style, culture, knowledge, and aesthetic tastes to the world. The goals of creating this wearable art collection were to: (a) incorporate traditional Chinese Xie Yi painting themes, ideals or motifs into modern fashion designs with the silhouettes of Western clothing through the use of a ...

Jellies are colorful plastic shoes that were very popular in the 1980s in mainly Europe and the United States. Women and children of all classes wore them because they were fun, easy-to-care-for summer footwear that was relatively inexpensive. They were available in many different colors, textures, and styles, from slip-ons to sandals. Although jellies were the most prevalent during the 1980s, they come back into style every few years.

Faja, Ellen C. Mckinney Mar 2019

Faja, Ellen C. Mckinney

Ellen C. McKinney

The faja is a compression undergarment, similar to a girdle. The faja is worn very tight on the body to create an extremely curvy hourglass figure. The undergarment shifts organs and flesh and has been said to reduce one's appetite. The degree of figure shaping and body compression depends on the fabric composition. Versions can be found in mixtures of spandex, cotton, nylon, or latex; the less forgiving the material, the more flattering the effect. The undergarment may be closed with hooks, a zipper, or both.

A novel nickel (Ni) based resistance temperature detector (RTD) was successfully developed for temperature monitoring applications. The RTD was fabricated by depositing Ni ink on a flexible polyimide substrate using the screen printing process. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to study the thermal behavior of the Ni ink and it was observed that the Ni ink can withstand up to 200°C before decomposition of the binder in the ink system. Scanning electron microscopy and white light interferometry were used to analyze the surface morphology of the printed Ni. X-ray diffractometry was used to obtain structural information, phase and crystallite size ...
