The purpose for this dress came from mission trips. On these trips, I saw houses that were made from or repaired with garbage bags. There was also an area where the people lived near the garbage dump. This reminded me of populations of people that are written off as “unworthy” or “undesirable.”

The inspiration for my outfit came from two different myths. The first myth came from the movie Thor that was based off of old Norse mythology. The costume for the character Loki mirrored his complex history and character with strips of leather crisscrossing each other. His costume was highlighted with plated of gold and bronze armor embellished with images such as his son, the great wolf Fenrir.

Designs center on the trouser suit and includes high-quality separates with unexpected details and exquisite fit.

The organic shaping of nature inspired the draped floral tunic. My menswear designs transcend a masculine or feminine silhouette. By manipulating the fall of the fabrication I was able to produce a garment design, which requires minimal stitch work, but maximizes the visual impact and wearability for the consumer.

At Columbia College Chicago collaboration is at the core of our curriculum. By integrating service learning experiences into the curriculum, students from CCC’s Fashion Studies Department (Fashion Business and Fashion Design) are given opportunities to engage in meaningful involvement, which makes for deeper connections within their community and disciplines. Last spring, one such organization Re:new, a local not for profit agency that provides training and employment opportunities to refugee women living in the Chicago area became a partner with both Fashion Business and Fashion Design students.
