Idea development in the early phases of the design process often involves the transformation of initial concepts into more feasible alternatives. However, this important component of design activity is often under-emphasized in design education, and tools to facilitate iteration of designs are limited. This study investigated Design Heuristics as a tool for the further development of initial concepts created by student designers. In a single session, advanced engineering students created initial concepts, and then used Design Heuristics to transform these concepts into alternative designs. Patient-specific cardiac models can be used to improve the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. However, practical application of these models is impeded by the computational costs and numerical uncertainties of fitting them to clinical measurements from individual patients. Reliable and efficient model tuning within medically-appropriate error bounds is a requirement for practical deployment in the time-constrained environment of the clinic. In this work, we present a framework to efficiently tune parameters of patient-specific mechanistic models using routinely acquired non-invasive patient data with a hybrid particle swarm and pattern search optimization algorithm.

The intersection of sound and design is an exciting and complex space for artistic experimentation and research. My approach for this work was to design, write, record and mix seven podcast episodes that narrate my analysis and interpretation of how we listen to sounds and interpret their meaning. Each episode is dedicated to one topic, and presents multiple sound samples that illustrate my take on the subject. This paper examines the interactions of design elements and perceptions of a website’s gender as well as the effects of perceived gender on aspects of user experience. Designing for a particular gender is common in both product and web design, but in many situations is exclusionary. We created a new methodology to perform conceptual design analysis on aircraft, using off-the-shelf, high-fidelity software tools to explore the project design space, including important preliminary design factors and thereby producing a more robust result which is less subject to compromise at later design stages. We claim that this analysis can be performed in one hour with commonly available computation resources, and therefore is applicable to conceptual design. The Innovation Engineering (IE) program, organized by inventor Doug Hall, is an educational workshop that presents methods and strategies to improve innovation. The Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) program, a division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), uses this training for their consultants at MEP-funded centers across the United States.
