Matching Sourcing Destination With Fashion Brands’ Business Model: Comparative Advantages Of Bangladesh And Vietnam Apparel Industries, Bertha Jacobs, Leslie H. Simpson, Sara O. Nelson, Elena E. Karpova

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

This study investigated the comparative advantages of the Bangladeshi and Vietnamese apparel industries using Global Value Chain (GVC) framework. In this study, the GVC framework was expanded to include social and environmental sustainability issues. Secondary data, for the 2012 - 2013 period, were collected and analyzed for each component of the apparel GVC. The findings indicated that while both countries have unique comparative advantages, Vietnam clearly emerged as a leader on many GVC components. Bangladesh’s comparative advantage lies in lower wages, producing high volume orders, and lean manufacturing. In spite of Vietnam’s higher labor costs, it has comparative advantages ...

Examination Of Two Decades In Used Clothing Trade: The Case Of The United States And Selected Developed Economies, Youngji Lee, Ling Zhang, Elena E. Karpova

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

This research examined two decades of the U.S. used clothing exports to the world. All countries (209) were classified into four groups based on the level of economic development. Between 1996 and 2012, U.S. used clothing exports shifted away from low-income economies to high-income economies. For the first time, our research demonstrated that the majority of used clothing discarded by American consumers is exported to high-income economies instead of poorest nations of the world. Next, used clothing exports and imports by volume and value in seven high-income countries were analyzed. The high-income countries not only exported but also ...

Adaptive Environments For Enabling Senior Citizens: An Holistic Assessment Tool For Housing Design And Iot-Based Technologies, Matteo Zallio, Damon Berry, Niccolò Casiddu

Conference papers

The population of older adults will continuously increase over the coming decades. As they get older, people will require assistance and regular monitoring, with higher costs for welfare system and families. Two vital aspects of a healthy lifestyle, are domestic autonomy and maintenance of relationships within the neighborhood. This leads to an interesting research issue: “Could houses and appliances have the potential to improve autonomy and quality of life of citizens? Which methods and tools could enhance wellbeing and healthy conditions? The house has the potential to be a safe, adaptive environment, integrated with technologies for life support. This work ...

Beyond The Stage: The Influence Of Theatre In Walt Disney Imagineering, Cassaundra Soumas Dec 2016

Beyond The Stage: The Influence Of Theatre In Walt Disney Imagineering, Cassaundra Soumas

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Walt Disney Imagineering is the head design team behind Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. Their experts and creators spearhead all projects, from shows and attractions to architecture and locations. Their groundbreaking work has put them at the forefront of the Themed Entertainment Industry. While they have become trendsetters in the world of entertainment, much of their foundation is still based in the world of theatre. Through this thesis, I will examine just how much of an influence theatre has had in the foundation of Walt Disney Imagineering. From simple verbiage to designs, theatre is present in many levels. I will ...

African American Culture In Historical Art Museums: Remembering A Buried Tragic Past, Lana Sarkisian Dec 2016

African American Culture In Historical Art Museums: Remembering A Buried Tragic Past, Lana Sarkisian

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The transparency of reality reflecting in art often represents a false tragedy in African American history because of the lack of preservation and representation due to a predominantly white dominion, ultimately leaving the veracity of their history to consign to oblivion. There is a common thread of forgetfulness with the retrieval of art in today’s society that embodies the African American community. Although artist Fred Wilson does not explicitly assert his assessment to the lack of black representation on account of cultural differences, he vocalizes how African American culture is indoctrinated to the public in a white, supremacist national ...

Multisensory Tristram Shandy, Cynthia N. Malone Dec 2016

Multisensory Tristram Shandy, Cynthia N. Malone

English Faculty Publications

An absorbed reader typically pays little conscious attention to the visual, tactile, and sometimes aural sensory experiences of reading. Unexpected formal and visual features of Laurence Sterne’s nine-volume fictional narrative, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, startle readers out of absorption and call attention to familiar operations like decoding black figures on white paper and turning pages. My edition of Volume I is designed to engage the senses through its visual structure, textures, and unexpected materials (buttons, marbled paper strips, and ribbons) and through formal surprises (interpolated documents, accordion-fold inserts, and paper lace). In its structure and ...

Nasty People: An Illustrated Guide To Understanding Sex, Sophia Weaver Dec 2016

Nasty People: An Illustrated Guide To Understanding Sex, Sophia Weaver

Senior Honors Projects

Sex made me and it probably made you too, but for many of us sex remains a mystery for our entire lives. I see sexual images every day, but I rarely hear it discussed openly or factually. This is problematic. If most people are having sex and most people have a lot of misinformation about it, STDs, unwanted pregnancies and even sexual assaults are much more likely. Research suggests that increased (and well developed) sex ed. can reduce all of the possible negative outcomes of sexual misinformation. My observations of everyday life and my research in academia have given me ...

French Women In Art: Reclaiming The Body Through Creation/Les Femmes Artistes Françaises : La Réclamation Du Corps À Travers La Création, Liatris Hethcoat

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The research I have conducted for my French Major Senior Thesis is a culmination of my passion for and studies of both French language and culture and the history and practice of Visual Arts. I have examined, across the history of art, the representation of women, and concluded that until the 20th century, these representations have been tools employed by the makers of history and those at the top of the patriarchal system, used to control women’s images and thus women themselves. I survey these representations, which are largely created by men—until the 20th century. I ...

Mural Arts: Giving A Voice To The Voiceless, Olivia Bates Nov 2016

Mural Arts: Giving A Voice To The Voiceless, Olivia Bates

Faculty Curated Undergraduate Works

The history of mural arts cites the use of public images in visualizing global and local challenges and triumphs. From the prehistoric cave art in Lascaux Grotttoes, France to the magnificent works of Italian Renaissance artists, murals have transformed the art world by visually conveying social values, events, and transitions of historical times. Throughout the world, artists highlight inequality, invoke change, and give a voice to the voiceless through their images. In order to determine the value and meaning of public art in global and local communities, I researched and documented murals through online and in-person visits; compiling my visual ...

Informed by multiple perspectives and practices in the arts, politics, technology, sociology, economics and science, the contributing collectives’ inquiries and strategies circumvent disciplinary limits and constraints and open up new spaces for thought and action.

Profiling And Segmentation Of International Tourists In India, Nripendra Singh, Kathleen A. Krentler, Sunaina Ahuja

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

Understanding visitors and the factors that pull them to visit a destination is imperative for successful branding as visitor characteristics and salient attributes are used to differentiate and position. This study identifies important attributes and segments of international tourists visiting India. Factor and Cluster analyses were used to analyse the data. Factor analysis identified six underlying dimensions while Cluster analysis identified four segments of international tourists across four continents. Profiling of clusters was done through Chi Square analysis leading to identification of target segments. Suggestions for branding and marketing strategies are provided according to the factors and segments identified.
