Vr In Vr: Capture And Display Of Virtual Reality Photospheres In A Visual Resources Context, Alex Nichols

At Michigan State, we have begun investigating some possibilities for creating and displaying photospheres in art history courses. Virtual reality-style presentation is particularly appealing for teaching architecture, archaeological sites, and other large, complex works that benefit from a spatial understanding that is otherwise difficult to communicate effectively when actual travel is not an option. Our pedagogical experiments are at a very early stage at this point, but the following report seeks to summarize and recommend various technical approaches to the tasks of creating and displaying virtual reality content in the context of visual resources.

cultureNOW has been developing a guidebook to the world outside thru smartphone technology to create a museum without walls. The exponentially growing digital collection currently contains about 18,000 sites, 52,000 images, 2550 podcasts, and 53 self-guided tours. 90 cities and arts organizations are partners to share their content. Jacobean textile design sprang from the Tree of Life motif, an ancient design that carried religious symbolism for many early cultures. It represented a greater power and as such could provide protection and even fertility.

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. My work is both a commentary on the pervasive societal ills of disposability and detachment in contemporary culture and an active participant in the same environment it criticizes. I demonstrate my simultaneous revulsion and fascination with disposable goods. I photograph myself with such chemically toxic substances as cosmetics, sodas and cleaning products, speaking to their harmful nature while also reveling in their shimmering color. The Benner Library Web site at Olivet Nazarene University was targeted for an update and those responsible desired a systematic, efficient approach to the process. The project needed clear goals and careful coordination of all stakeholders, including all levels of patrons, library professionals and staff, and university administrators. A team composed of web developers, programmers, and graphic designers accomplished the technological process, but communication between team members and stakeholders was essential. The methodical approach proved to be time-consuming, but effective.
