Man To Man, Chadric Devin Harms Apr 2015

Man To Man, Chadric Devin Harms

Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity, School of Art, Art History and Design

In athletics, the phrase “man-to-man” refers to a type a defense: one where a single player is paired against another individual. They are in constant competition, and as rivals they relentlessly compare themselves to one another. This colloquial expression, which I use as the title of my thesis, also draws attention to the gendered term “man” as a social construction and signifies the diversity and complexity that exists between one representation of masculinity and another.

Throughout my childhood I felt an overwhelming responsibility and pressure from my stepfather and the small, Midwestern community in which I grew up to participate ...

Dispersal: A Multidisciplinary Investigation Of Plant Life, Alexandra E. Arzt Jan 2015

Dispersal: A Multidisciplinary Investigation Of Plant Life, Alexandra E. Arzt

Theses and Dissertations

Using plants as a basis for exploring the interstices between the human and nonhuman, this thesis investigates ideas of awareness, intelligence, deep time, animism, and the fluctuating human perception of the agency of Nature. It outlines environmental art practices since the 1950s involving vegetal life. In addition, the paper provides a critical analysis of plant perception of Jakob von Uexküll’s work and theories of vital materialism and “critical plant studies” while noting recent studies in plant neurobiology. In my work, plants become active participants via their movement, seeding, and smell. This study takes the form of imitation, purposeful symbiosis ...

Plain Sight, Paloma Rebecca Dooley Jan 2015

Plain Sight, Paloma Rebecca Dooley

Senior Projects Spring 2015

Plain Sight is my attempt to mine the detail of the landscape around me in search of hidden magic. When I photograph I often find myself in awe of these places that seem at once wholly ordinary and wholly exceptional. They fill me with wonder; they make me glad that they exist, as if ready to be found and wanting to be seen. I am attracted to their beauty and their oddness. Each place seems to be so rich with detail that it is a whole world unto itself, a microcosm to be magnified. I want each viewer to be ...

Reframed : A Collection Of Photographs, And, Capturing The Real : Reframing Visual Pleasure In The Photographed Female Nude, An Exegesis, Larry Defelippi Jan 2015

Reframed : A Collection Of Photographs, And, Capturing The Real : Reframing Visual Pleasure In The Photographed Female Nude, An Exegesis, Larry Defelippi

Theses : Honours

This creative Honours project is a practice-led inquiry into the photographed female nude. The images of the female nude photographed during the course of this project were taken in Australia and Colombia, providing a progression in aesthetics as the project unfolded. Informing the practice, and hence the images, is Roland Barthes’ concept of the punctum as read through Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytical concept of the real. The project endeavours to develop an aesthetic of visual pleasure to liberate the female nude from a predominant psychosexual reading, and advocate a revisualisation of the nude as a less sexually objectified form.!In ...

The Fragile Bee: Nancy Macko At Moah, Kathleen Stewart Howe, Carole Ann Klonarides, Stephen Nowlin, Nancy Macko Jan 2015

The Fragile Bee: Nancy Macko At Moah, Kathleen Stewart Howe, Carole Ann Klonarides, Stephen Nowlin, Nancy Macko

Pomona Faculty Books

“The Fragile Bee” was exhibited at the Museum of Art and History in Lancaster, CA and is an outcry to the plight of the bees in relationship to the environment. This accompanying catalog critically examines the work in the exhibition beginning with a foreword by Andi Campognone, museum manager and curator at MOAH. Artist Nancy Macko established a garden for native bee-attracting plants in order to document them throughout the year. The resulting series of photographs, "Botanical Portraits", are the subject of the essay by museum director Kathleen Stewart Howe. Contemporary art writer and curator Carole Ann Klonarides writes in ...
