The Visual Memoir Project: Searching For An Art Of Memory, Blake Smith Dec 2015

The Visual Memoir Project: Searching For An Art Of Memory, Blake Smith

Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education

This essay describes an in-progress arts-based dissertation project that attempts “visual life writing” (Sinner & Owen, 2011) as photographic memoir. Spanning several years to date, the series addresses the idea of visually archiving the self through an everyday photographic ritual. Ruminations on loss, presence/absence, and the passage of time are given creative and emotional consideration from behind the camera. Through narrative reflections on my experiences as an artist, teacher, and researcher, the process of art-making is brought alongside the images themselves. Drawing as its subject matter selected scenes, encounters, and objects from everyday life, I share how the project came ...

Vr In Vr: Capture And Display Of Virtual Reality Photospheres In A Visual Resources Context, Alex Nichols Dec 2015

Vr In Vr: Capture And Display Of Virtual Reality Photospheres In A Visual Resources Context, Alex Nichols

VRA Bulletin

At Michigan State, we have begun investigating some possibilities for creating and displaying photospheres in art history courses. Virtual reality-style presentation is particularly appealing for teaching architecture, archaeological sites, and other large, complex works that benefit from a spatial understanding that is otherwise difficult to communicate effectively when actual travel is not an option. Our pedagogical experiments are at a very early stage at this point, but the following report seeks to summarize and recommend various technical approaches to the tasks of creating and displaying virtual reality content in the context of visual resources.

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin Nov 2015

The Half-Life & After-Life Of New Media, Nancy Austin

Journal of Contemporary Archival Studies

It is fitting to think of the half-life of new media using the time-based metaphor of radioactive decay. As a metaphor, an object’s half-life can be a useful way to talk about the potent technological modernity of new media and, like Walter Benjamin’s well-known notion of the aura, call attention to an object’s performativity. However, Benjamin’s aura remains a constant reminder of irrevocable originality whereas remarking on half-life references a quality that changes over time. But what happens after the rhetorical impact of being new has run its course? What is the life expectancy of once-new ...

Interior Personas, Bryce Harper Oct 2015

Interior Personas, Bryce Harper

Kaleidoscope

With this body of work, I attempted to truly get inside the human persona. People tend to wear a mask that they feel best represents what they think everyone wants them to be. They tend to hide or brush away important aspects of their personality in fear of persecution or rejection from others. I started with myself, looking inside to reconsider my own beliefs and how I portray myself to society. The combination of that photographic self-discovery and written journal entries came together in a series of self portraits that I felt were a true representation of who I really ...

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd Sep 2015

Six Leadership Lessons From Photography, Brenda L. Boyd

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

"I learned that the photographers who captured unforgettable images all had some things in common: they seemed to know themselves and people; they had vision, passion, and timing; they had an innate ability to communicate effectively; they took risks; and they learned from their mistakes. I also came to realize that as a result of their unique presence—and often their sacrifice—they made a significant and lasting contribution to our world."
