The Visual Memoir Project: Searching For An Art Of Memory, Blake Smith Dec 2015

The Visual Memoir Project: Searching For An Art Of Memory, Blake Smith

Marilyn Zurmuehlen Working Papers in Art Education

This essay describes an in-progress arts-based dissertation project that attempts “visual life writing” (Sinner & Owen, 2011) as photographic memoir. Spanning several years to date, the series addresses the idea of visually archiving the self through an everyday photographic ritual. Ruminations on loss, presence/absence, and the passage of time are given creative and emotional consideration from behind the camera. Through narrative reflections on my experiences as an artist, teacher, and researcher, the process of art-making is brought alongside the images themselves. Drawing as its subject matter selected scenes, encounters, and objects from everyday life, I share how the project came ...

Via Negativa, Stephanie J. Rue May 2015

Via Negativa, Stephanie J. Rue

Theses and Dissertations

Via Negativa is my response to a linear, rational, Western framework of expressing and experiencing religion, as well as of reading. This project represents a shift away from Protestant Reformed thinking. It has meant an embrace of the unknown, a celebration of darkness, and an exploration of ancient religious texts to find meaning. This essay describes formative experiences and past artwork leading up to Via Negativa, as well as a description of the project itself.

A View Of Affect: A Treatise On The Heart And Other Significant Hearts, Leslie Smith

Sunset Iridescence is a one of a kind sculptural bookwork which reflects the essence of the wings of the Madagascar Sunset Moth. My work is very much about the physical qualities of the materials I use. The papers, inks and gilding supplies used to recreate the colors and iridescence of the moth are described. A comparison of color created by pigment and color created by the refraction of light rays is discussed. Parallels are drawn between the structure of the codex and the behavioral patterns of the moths. The local name for the Madagascar Sunset Moth is Lolonandriana - lolo for ...

Pathways To New Understanding, Candida Pagan

Theses and Dissertations

The conceptual foundation for my creative thesis work is based in research into the development of science, particularly the field of cosmology, and its related visual vocabulary. Three interrelated projects encompass my interests in unique artists' books and variable editions, research based projects, codified presentation of data, and universal interconnectedness, or oneness in all things, that was at the heart of medieval cosmology and is embraced by some 21st century subcultures.

The thematic timeline of the artwork spans developments in the Early Middle Ages related to astronomy and cosmology and through 20th century guidebooks and NASA's social media accounts ...
