Archaeology Of Social Patterning, Chase Bray Jan 2019

Archaeology Of Social Patterning, Chase Bray

School of Arts & Sciences Theses

The episteme that created the grid as a structure for logic has been usurped. We compose meaning from an adulterated grid, or pattern. I process meaning through the abuse of acrid patterns and the grid, the reduction of imagery to silhouettes and by referencing both cultural and classical mythology.

Arts And Society: A Symbiosis, Mayur Singh Jan 2019

Arts And Society: A Symbiosis, Mayur Singh

Social Space

Looking back in history, it is hard to pinpoint exactly when and why people engaged in the arts. We know that cavemen used it to record and represent objects around them, but also that over time the arts came to be appreciated as a reflection of the skills and creative genius of their creators. The arts has also been used by governments to reflect the views of the state.

Ciencia De Tejer En Los Andes: Estructuras Y Técnicas De Faz De Urdimbre, Denise Y. Arnold, Elvira Espejo

Textile Research Works

Subversive Stitch, Kimberly Reinagel

MA Projects

WhiteBox Harlem is thrilled to present Subversive Stitch, a group exhibition featuring female contemporary artists that work in textiles, curated by Kimberly Reinagel. Presented at this show will be works by Eozen Agopian, Alexandria Deters, Zhen Guo, Lisa Kellner, Mariana Garibay Raeke, Kimberly Reinagel, Leila Seyedzadeh, Victoria Udondian and Christina Whitney Wong. This exhibition will look at the societal reassignment of the textile in the art market. Textiles throughout history have been primarily considered a "feminine" medium. Fabrics, fashion, embroidery and tapestry all connote a feminine background, and have thus notoriously not been received with much gravity. This exhibition is ...

The Belt And Road Initiative's Impact On Textile And Clothing Supply Chains In Asia: Views From Hong Kong Industrial Stakeholders, Man Hin Eve Chan, Chi Kuen Danny Ho, Tsz Leung Yip, Jenny Cheung, Angappa Gunasekaran

Staff Publications

The global supply chains in the Textile and Clothing (T&C) industry have been shaping by various forces, among them economic development policy is one of the strongest. Amid the rollout of the Chinese’s new national development strategy—Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), major T&C companies see both opportunities and challenges in optimizing and restructuring the networks of their production facilities. One notable and growing trend associated with the BRI is the relocation of T&C manufacturing from China to ASEAN countries and establishment of new factories along the Belt and Road (B&R). Much has been examined ...

Qipao And Female Fashion In Republican China And Shanghai (1912-1937): The Discovery And Expression Of Individuality, Qingxuan Han Jan 2019

Qipao And Female Fashion In Republican China And Shanghai (1912-1937): The Discovery And Expression Of Individuality, Qingxuan Han

Senior Projects Fall 2019

This project is an attempt to understand the Chinese dress qipao in Republican China, with a primary concentration in Shanghai, and its associations with body politics, urbanscape, modernity, personal and national identity, and sociocultural practices. In particular, I argue that qipao, amongst other fashions of Republican China, had been one of the earliest examples of the modern expression of individuality through fashion in China; I strive to discover how this practice was enabled by its contemporary social environment as well as technological advancements.

Effect Of Fabric Deformation On Thermal Protective Performance Of Clothing In A Cylindrical Configuration, Yun Su, Rui Li, Jie Yang, Guowen Song, Chunhui Xiang, Jun Li

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

Firefighting protective clothing is designed to provide thermal protection for firefighters in fire extinguishing or rescuing operations. However, fabric deformation and stretching due to body movement and different postures could change the clothing's thermal protective performance. Current gaps in our knowledge with regard to fabric deformation often resulted in biased predictions of the thermal protective level that personal protective equipment (PPE) can provide, highlighting the need to improve our understanding in this field. In this study, we developed a device that can be connected to a cylindrical copper calorimeter to simulate fabric deformation due to body movement and different ...

Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel Dec 2018

Masks: A New Face For The Theatre, Alexi Michael Siegel

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

This study seeks to reimagine and reinvigorate modern theatre’s relationship with mask work through text-based historical research and practice-based artistic research. It focuses on three ancient mask traditions: pre- and early Hellenistic Greek theatre, Japanese Noh theatre, and Nigerian Egungun masquerades. Research on these mask traditions and recent masked productions informed the development and staging of a masked performance of Charles Mee’s Life is a Dream. The production featured sections for each of the ancient masking styles and a final section that explored masks in a contemporary theatrical style. As a whole, this creative project pulls masks out ...

Conscious Consumerism: A Design Process For Stylish Sustainable Apparel, Luz Becerra Dec 2018

Conscious Consumerism: A Design Process For Stylish Sustainable Apparel, Luz Becerra

Honors Theses

The main objective of this paper is to explore current consumer behavior and perspective on sustainable apparel as well as future trends in the market place such as willingness to buy. I investigated the market for organic apparel brands, and identified potential areas of growth. My findings concluded that young consumers lack interest in sustainable apparel because they are not sufficiently educated in the topic and are not willing to sacrifice their style identity, consequently purchasing trendy fast-fashion items. The fashion industry is famously claimed to be the second most polluting industry in the world, so I designed a line ...

Stranded Cellular Automaton And Weaving Products, Hao Yang Sep 2018

Stranded Cellular Automaton And Weaving Products, Hao Yang

Mathematical Sciences Technical Reports (MSTR)

In order to analyze weaving products mathematically and find out valid weaving products, it is natural to relate them to Cellular Automaton. They are both generated based on specific rules and some initial conditions. Holden and Holden have created a Stranded Cellular Automaton that can represent common weaving and braiding products. Based on their previous findings, we were able to construct a Java program and analyze various aspects of the automaton they created. This paper will discuss the complexity of the Stranded Cellular Automaton, how to determine whether a weaving product holds together or not based on the automaton and ...

Toxins In The Collection: Museum Awareness And Protection, Nellie Slocum

Museum Studies Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to discuss museum policies regarding toxic materials used in the creation of an object or added to it as a preservation or pesticide technique. After surveying different museums, it has been found that many museums are unaware of what parts of their collections contain toxic materials. Because of this unfamiliarity with the danger these materials might pose, many museums to not have policies in place regarding them. Toxins in collection items may pose a threat to museum staff who are working with them on a day to day basis. Toxic materials are prevalent in ...
