Why Do They Sew? Women’S Motivations To Sew Clothing For Themselves, Addie Martindale, Ellen C. Mckinney

Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management Publications

Garment sewing is undergoing a resurgence in participation, with a growing number of women choosing to sew their clothing instead of buying readily available fast fashion. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the current motivations of an ethnically diverse sample of women who sew garments for themselves. The in-depth interview data from 15 interviews revealed personal fulfillment to be the overarching reason for participation. Personal fulfillment was achieved through main emergent themes of investment, control, and empowerment with 10 subthemes. Theoretical perspectives of prosumerism, craft and do-it-yourself consumption, and uses and gratification theory were applied to the ...

Human Body Form: What Does It Mean?, Frederick S. Cottle, Pamela V. Ulrich, Karla P. Simmons Jan 2013

Human Body Form: What Does It Mean?, Frederick S. Cottle, Pamela V. Ulrich, Karla P. Simmons

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

Research in the field of somatology related to the fit of apparel has focused on the current apparel manufacturing process flow. In the current system, three dimensional (3D) body form is converted to one dimensional (1D) sizes and two dimensional (2D) shapes in order to utilize shaping methodology in the conversion of 2D fabrics into a 3D garment that fit the 3D human body form.

Perception Of Size Variations In 3d Virtual Garment Simulation, Dong-Eun Kim Jan 2013

Perception Of Size Variations In 3d Virtual Garment Simulation, Dong-Eun Kim

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

Three-Dimensional garment simulation is an innovative technology enabling apparel product developers to view a realistic 3D image of a garment before physical sample making steps. The benefit is reduced time and money spent on sample making for fit evaluation. However, in order for apparel industry to widely accept this technology, it needs to be proved that the technology is capable of showing different garment size variations accurately.

New Methods For The Objective Measurement Of Bra Fit, Flora Lau, Winnie Yu, Jintu Fan, Rong Zheng Jan 2013

New Methods For The Objective Measurement Of Bra Fit, Flora Lau, Winnie Yu, Jintu Fan, Rong Zheng

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

The fit of a bra is critical, not only from a comfort and support perspective but it can significantly impact on the health and well-being of the wearer (Chan et al. 2001). Bra fitting is particularly important for adolescent females as it can affect the size, shape, and composition of their bones and breasts during this growth period (Strasburger 2006). Wood et al. (2008) found that 80% of young women, aged 18-26, that they investigated, wore the wrong sized bras. Bra fitting is still an inherently subjective process. It relies on the experience of a professional bra fitter to assess ...

Analysis Of Body Movements For Development Of Male Wheelchair Tennis Shirt, Heejae Jin, Kathy Mullet Jan 2013

Analysis Of Body Movements For Development Of Male Wheelchair Tennis Shirt, Heejae Jin, Kathy Mullet

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

The purpose of this study was to analyze body movements to examine clothing fit for wheelchair tennis players. To determine the range of movement of the arms and torso of male wheelchair tennis players, manipulative tasks (Hutzler, 1986) in wheelchair tennis were applied for the body movements.

Pattern Grading Approaches – Assessment Of Grade Rules And Fit As Applied To Merchandise, Sheri L. Dragoo Jan 2013

Pattern Grading Approaches – Assessment Of Grade Rules And Fit As Applied To Merchandise, Sheri L. Dragoo

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

Over the past decades, as the population has changed in sizing, company fit structures have changed to accompany this growth. Company grades rule charts have shifted to generally accommodate a population that is growing larger, both bigger and taller (Smith & Norris, 2004). In addition to this fit shift, there is continued discussion over the use of vanity sizing strategies of contemporary apparel manufacturers. Whether companies are exercising accurate conveyance of anthropometric population growth, or vanity sizing, these changes filter down through the design and production processes of a company. Hence, while teaching grading in fashion design and production classes, a ...

Exploring A Process: Using Technology To Define Firefighter Glove Fit Preference, Kristen Morris, Melissa Moukperian, Carley Campbell, Janelle Dorn, Helen Trejo, Yingying Wu, Lauren Goodnow, Sally Schultz, Jocelyn Wu, Susan Ashdown Jan 2013

Exploring A Process: Using Technology To Define Firefighter Glove Fit Preference, Kristen Morris, Melissa Moukperian, Carley Campbell, Janelle Dorn, Helen Trejo, Yingying Wu, Lauren Goodnow, Sally Schultz, Jocelyn Wu, Susan Ashdown

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

The aim of this study was to develop methodologies for a replicable process to scan bare and gloved hands and evaluate the fit of a structural firefighter glove model using a Human Solutions Vitus Head scanner. Our analysis was grounded in a literature review and findings from two focus groups of fire fighters in New York State. In our charge to deliver a replicable process to generate 3D anthropometric data, the study identified changes to the current glove model that could be implemented immediately to improve dexterity, and future areas to research for long-term enhanced fit and sizing of this ...

Female Consumer’S Fit Strategies And Fit Perception Of Formalwear Rented Online: Content Analysis, Ellen Mckinney, Eonyou Shin Jan 2013

Female Consumer’S Fit Strategies And Fit Perception Of Formalwear Rented Online: Content Analysis, Ellen Mckinney, Eonyou Shin

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

With the advent of Internet technologies, consumers today have extensive opportunities to evaluate products online. Because “consumer reviews, word-of-mouth on the products, could be the most powerful force in the market place” (Silverman, 1997, p. 34), investigating consumer reviews is crucial to understand potential aspects of clothing that consumers may use to evaluate clothing fit. Given that apparel is a highly body-related product, the body-absent online apparel shopping environments is problematic for consumers’ fit problems and sizing inconsistency. Indeed, 62% of women could not find clothing that fit well, and 57% of women did not fit into today’s standard ...

An Examination Of Male Consumers’ Attitude Toward Using Fit Mass-Customizationand Intention Of Buying Fit Mass-Customized Apparel, Jung-Ha Yang, Jessie Chen-Yu Jan 2013

An Examination Of Male Consumers’ Attitude Toward Using Fit Mass-Customizationand Intention Of Buying Fit Mass-Customized Apparel, Jung-Ha Yang, Jessie Chen-Yu

International Textile and Apparel Association (ITAA) Annual Conference Proceedings

The purposes of the current study are (a) to develop a framework to examine the factors that influence consumer attitude toward using fit MC and intention of buying fit masscustomized apparel, and (b) to identify the characteristics of male consumers who have a greater intention of buying fit mass-customized apparel. Based on the purposes of the study, a conceptual model was developed through the integration of the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991), Technology Acceptance Model (Davis, 1989), and previous propositions and study findings, and was used as the framework of the research.
