My interest in architecture began to develop during my semester abroad in Rome, Italy. The Roman architecture, so dense with mystery, never ceased to stimulate wonder about the ancient design processes. I often found myself wondering how these renowned buildings have withstood the history of their existence.

Use of natural dyes provides an opportunity for apparel designers to expand the creative process and follow the unknown. Exploring new dyestuff and dye techniques provides creative problems to solve. The purpose of this design was to explore a socially responsible and sustainable dye technique and utilize the resulting fabric in a design that would connect to the natural environment and provide a statement of social responsibility.

The aging U.S. population has resulted in a larger percentage of individuals with disabilities and special apparel needs. This demographic shift necessitates a more holistic approach to apparel and accessory design as it becomes an increasingly important market. It is one that is often neglected by the apparel products industry and by design educators (Administration on Aging, 2011, Center for Disease Control and Preventation, 2010).
