The goal set forth was to design a wedding gown for a non-traditional bride who desires distinct aesthetics and comfort for the special day through the use of fiber art techniques. A secondary goal for the designer was to reuse metal findings from the manufacture of jeans for the bridal market. To achieve the second goal surplus nickel backs of tack buttons for jeans were knit and crocheted into the gown.

Apparel manufacturing processes are one of the most prevalent sources of environmental problems at almost every stage (Gam & Banning, 2011). Some apparel designers/manufacturers are striving to incorporate sustainable and socially responsible processes to create non-toxic, healthy, biodegradable textiles and apparel products. This apparel design project combined handcraft techniques and digital printing to create an eco-friendly line entitled Life of Earth. The design process model used was created by LaBat and Sokoloskwi (1999) including: (a) problem definition and research, (b) creative exploration, and (c) implementation; and the designer included an evaluation step.

Born a slave, George Washington Carver (1864-1943) is one of the most historically prominent African American scientists. Carver was a pioneer as an agriculturalist and botanist by introducing methods of soil conservation for farmers, inventing hundreds of by-products from peanuts, pecans, sweet potatoes, and soybeans, and practicing “zero waste” sustainability. Scholars have recognized Carver’s talent as a painter and his ability to develop paints and dyes from various natural sources; however, there is very little scholarship documenting his work as a textile artist. Learning through industry collaborations is critical in decreasing the gap between the real world and the academic environment. Working on challenges drawn from industry can increase students' knowledge and future employability, thus enhancing labor force preparation. This study explored students' perceptions (n = 110) of the benefits and challenges of working with industry projects as part of a creative thinking and problem-solving course. A constant challenge for family and consumer sciences (FCS) educators, particularly those in more scientific-based courses, is keeping students interested in course material and ensuring active participation (Ramey-Gassert, Walberg, & Walberg, 1994). The concept of learning outside of the traditional, formal classroom setting is an important component of FCS educational pedagogy. Methods of learning beyond the FCS classroom include visiting museums, accessing archives—both in person and virtually—and participating in field studies (Roehl, 2013).

The purpose of this research was to develop and validate a measurement scale for food safety culture in onsite foodservices. Nonsupervisory employees in hospital and school foodservices participated in a two-phase, mixed methods research design process. In phase 1, four focus groups were conducted to identify relevant factors of food safety culture. In phase 2, a survey completed by 582 respondents appeared to validate six food safety culture factors: management and coworkers support, communication, self commitment, environment support, work pressure, and risk judgement. One act of intentional contamination of school meals can quickly harm many children. Food defense guidelines for schools exist; yet previous research has found communication, utility security, and physical security practices are infrequently implemented. A multi-site case study approach obtained a 360-degree assessment of food defense practices in five school districts. Meal production and service were observed, a food defense checklist was completed, and key stakeholders were interviewed. Qualitative analysis of interviews revealed lack of awareness, lack of concern, conflicting priorities, and isolation of food service from other school operations impaired food defense implementation.
