Letters To Goya / Titles | Titles / Letters To Goya, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

Why is Carl Jung dancing in the Streets of Death? Because one of his favorites among the living—artist James Magee, the creator of the colossal desert stonework, The Hill, and “the alleged” anima incarnate of the mysterious artist Annabel Livermore—has concocted this brew of poems and letters from the lands of Ordinary and Surreal. The poems flutter like butterflies from his imagination as he creates large steel assemblages. Weirdly, Letters to Goya are found pieces from 1955, from the rickety typewriter of the Duchess of Alba, who in (sur)real life is an old lady who wheel-chairs around ...

Her name is Renee Blackbear, but what most people call the 19-year-old Ojibwe woman is Cash. She lived all her life in Fargo, sister city to Minnesota’s Moorhead, just downriver from the Cities. She has one friend, the sheriff Wheaton. He pulled her from her mother’s wrecked car when she was three. Since then, Cash navigated through foster homes, and at 13 was working farms, driving truck. Wheaton wants her to take hold of her life, signs her ...

Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2018 Year-End Report, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

I designed this Ysleta Del Sur Pueblo 2018 Year-End Report for the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, a Puebloan Native American tribal entity located in the Ysleta section of El Paso, Texas. With a color palette of terracotta and dark turquoise, the report features artwork created by artists from the Tigua Indian Cultural Center and the Eagle's Path Culural Gift Shop. These artists' medium is usually pottery, however, under my art direction, to better complement the report format, they used watercolor paper while staying true to the tribe's traditional motifs and aesthetics. The spiral-bound report was expertly printed and ...

Book cover and interior template I designed for Girl Gone Missing by Marcie R. Rendon, published by Cinco Puntos Press.

After a serial killer almost murdered Delpha Wade (The Do-Right, 2015), the county hospital releases her into the handcuffs of the city police for questioning. She killed the man who was trying to kill her, and she is, after all, an ex-con. It’s still Beaumont, 1970s, and mindsets don’t change along the Texas Gulf Coast. Her boss, the neophyte private detective Tom Phelan, awaits her, and soon they are once again in deep shit. It seems like an ...

A Bookbinder’S Journey, Peter D. Verheyen

Peter D Verheyen

The Syracuse University Libraries Assembly (SULA) presents Peter Verheyen, Librarian at Syracuse University Libraries. At this illustrated lecture on July 30, 2018 Verheyen spoke to his career as a bookbinder with a focus on his creative work. A video recording that also includes the questions & answers can be viewed here. Among the facets discussed were how his experiences and the mentorship he received as a work-study student guided him to apprentice in his “native” Germany; the materials and techniques he uses to craft his bindings, many of which have been exhibited throughout the US and abroad; and a recent project ...

Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway Jun 2018

Assur Is King Of Persia: Illustrations Of The Book Of Esther In Some Nineteenth-Century Sources, Steven W. Holloway

Steven W Holloway

The marriage of archaeological referencing and picture Bibles in the nineteenth century resulted in an astonishing variety of guises worn by the court of Ahasuerus in Esther. Following the exhibition of Neo-Assyrian sculpture in the British Museum and the wide circulation of such images in various John Murray publications, British illustrators like Henry Anelay defaulted to Assyrian models for kings and rulers in the Old Testament, including the principal actors in Esther, even though authentic Achaemenid Persian art had been available for illustrative pastiche for decades. This curious adoptive choice echoed British national pride in its splendid British Museum collection ...

A Woman, In Bed, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

Simone comes of age in WWI. She comes into her own in WWII as part of the French resistance. Frequently, she abandons herself to lust—particularly to a man named Jacques. She leaves her first husband for Jacques and spends over a decade as his lover. They eventually marry, yet Simone still sleeps with strangers, her husband the most distant of them all. What is she seeking? Simone isn’t sure. More than sex—a tenderness that lust can never fill. Just when her body feels most fragile, she meets Pierre, a much younger man, a novice at love-making, clumsy ...

All Around Us, Anne M. Giangiulio Sep 2017

All Around Us, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

Grandpa says circles are all around us. He points to the rainbow that rises high in the sky after a thundercloud has come. “Can you see? That’s only half of the circle. The rest of it is down below, in the earth.” He and his granddaughter meditate on gardens and seeds, on circles seen and unseen, inside and outside us, on where our bodies come from and where they return to. They share and create family traditions in this stunning exploration of the cycles of life and nature.

Mario Rufino Méndez Y La Caricatura Política En Nuestra Raza: Estudio Testimonial De Una Rica Producción Cultural De Los Afro-Uruguayos (1933-1948), María Cristina Burgueño

María Cristina Burgueño

This work is a one volume published by the National Library of Uruguay with a prologue by Dr. George Reid Andrews. It provides an in depth analysis of the corpus of caricatures made by Mario R. Mendez, an afro-Uruguayan artist, for the magazine “Our Race” during its second period 1933-1948. These editorial caricatures made a strong statement against the Fascism in Europe and the League of Nations’ attitude towards the invasion of Ethiopia ordered by Benito Mussolini. They also satirized the political and social reality in Uruguay. Both, the caricatures and the magazine provide a testimony of an extensive cultural ...

Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen Mckinney Jul 2016

Case Study As A Means To Document And Promote Creative Pattern Cutting Processes, Ellen Mckinney

Ellen C. McKinney

Practical experiences of traditional and emerging processes in creative pattern cutting can be successfully documented and promoted through case study. Case study is a comprehensive research strategy for investigating an empirical topic by following a set of pre-specified procedures (Yin, 1994). The case study method is different from research methods such as experiments and surveys where statistical generalization is used to extend the results to a larger population. In the case study method, analytic generalization is used to generalize from the case study to theoretical propositions. This paper explores reasons and solutions for undocumented pattern cutting knowledge. Pattern cutters mentally ...

Book cover and interior template I designed for Quicks by Kevin Waltman, published by Cinco Puntos Press.
Senior Year. Glory time! D-Bow’s game has it all and colleges are taking notice. But nothing’s easy. He’s still rehabbing a knee injury and his job as Marion East point guard is under threat from a new white guy. Plus he’s got family drama. And girl trouble. Can he put it all together for his senior season? Or will he crash and burn like so many Marion East players before him? Quicks is the fourth and final book in ...

Book cover and interior template I designed for Pull by Kevin Waltman, published by Cinco Puntos Press.
Derrick has worked hard the last two years getting ready for his junior basketball season. He’s earned his coach’s trust and his role as the starting point guard for Marion East. Marion East has never won the Indiana state championship, but this year the team is Derrick’s. And Derrick is really good. Major colleges work feverishly to recruit him because now that he’s a junior, they can do it legally. Opponents worry when D-Bow steps onto the court. Derrick ...

The Collins: W. Collin, Court Bookbinders & Ernst Collin, The Author Of The Pressbengel, Peter D. Verheyen

Peter D Verheyen

The Berlin-based firm of W. Collin led by Wilhelm and Georg Collin and the antiquarian, author, and editor Ernst Collin were among the leaders in German bookbinding trade and writings about the trade from the mid-1800’s into the mid-1930’s. During that same time, bookbinding experienced many transformations, as well, moving from a trade practiced in smaller master-run shops to large industrial firms, including changes in materials, book structure, aesthetics, and overall business climate with concerns about quality and business opportunities. As court bookbinders to Prussian Kings and German Emperors, the firm of W. Collin was privileged with access ...

Die Collins: W. Collin, Hofbuchbinder & Ernst Collin, Der Autor Des Pressbengels, Peter D. Verheyen

Peter D Verheyen

Book cover I designed for 'The Do-Right' written by Lisa Sandlin, published by Cinco Puntos Press. This was one of those design jobs that, after several cover proposals by me—including a woodcut, and one with groovy 70s type referencing the time period in which the book is set, we all decided that this photo entitled 'Blessing' by Keith Carter was simply perfect for the cover. It's a great read brimming with Grrrrl power in the main character of Delpha Wade. 306 pages. 1973. That's fourteen years of prison time after Delpha Wade killed a man who was ...

Crane Boy, Anne M. Giangiulio

Anne M. Giangiulio

Book cover and interior I designed for 'Crane Boy' written by Diana Cohn and illustrated by Youme, published by Cinco Puntos Press. It tells the tale of Kinga and his classmates waiting for the black-necked cranes to return to the kingdom of Bhutan. The birds fly south over the highest mountains in the word to winter in the valley where Kinga lives, deep in the Himalayas. The cranes have been visiting the valley since ancient times, but every year, fewer cranes return. Kinga is concerned. "What can he do?," he wonders. He and his classmates approach the monks for permission ...

DER PRESSBENGEL / THE BONE FOLDER:
A DIALOGUE BETWEEN AN AESTHETICALLY- INCLINED BIBLIOPHILE AND A WELL-VERSED-IN-ALL-ASPECTS-OF-THE- CRAFT BOOKBINDER

By Ernst Collin, translated and introduced by Peter D. Verheyen

Der Pressbengel, by Ernst Collin, was originally published in German in 1922. Conceived as a dialogue between a bibliophile and a master bookbinder on all aspects of the bookbinding craft as well as specific techniques, the text also addresses the conflicts between quality and cost and matters of good taste. The family and bindery of W. Collin were Court Bookbinders in Berlin from the mid 1800 until the "liquidation" of the firm under ...
