Exploration Of Gender Portrayals In Marvel Comics, Chiagozie Nwasuruba Apr 2019

Exploration Of Gender Portrayals In Marvel Comics, Chiagozie Nwasuruba

Undergraduate Research Conference

Comic books have been a major part of American pop culture since around the 1930s. These comic books depicted ordinary people who, through some sort of accident or happenstance, gained superpowers. People who could lift cars over their heads or leap over buildings in a single bound. Comic books have a long history. The history of comics is divided into six ages: the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age, the Plastic Age, the Revival Age, and the present. There have been many different comic book companies over the years, but at the forefront of comic book culture, there ...

Making Visible: More Of The Picture, Sarah Slavick Mar 2018

Making Visible: More Of The Picture, Sarah Slavick

Lesley University Community of Scholars Day

In Linda Nochlin’s essay “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?, “ she demonstrates how, for centuries, institutional and societal structures had made it “impossible for women to achieve artistic excellence, or success, on the same footing as men, no matter what the potency of their so-called talent, or genius.” As the Guerilla Girls noted, only 1 woman had a solo museum show in NY in 1985, and, in 2015, 30 years later, it wasn’t much better with 1 at the Guggenheim, Met and Whitney, and 2 at MOMA. On International Women’s Day, March 1, 2017, I ...

Preserving The Classics: 'The Iliad' Composed By A Typographer, William C. Scharlott Mar 2015

Preserving The Classics: 'The Iliad' Composed By A Typographer, William C. Scharlott

Undergraduate Research Symposium

I wanted to explore a classical text from a typographer's perspective. I was curious to examine how modern technological conventions could be taken advantage of to illustrate the emotion and power of the story. This fusion brings the classical text into the modern age for an audience that is unprepared for this unique relationship. I typeset The Iliad by Homer and examined the visual vernacular that would push the story I was trying to illustrate, through text.

The Graphic Narrative As A Creative And Therapeutic Vehicle, Cara G. Willer Mar 2015

The Graphic Narrative As A Creative And Therapeutic Vehicle, Cara G. Willer

Undergraduate Research Symposium

As an artist I find the graphic narrative communicates my energies, thoughts, emotions, and experiences. My own personal struggles with intrusive thoughts, anxiety, and depression have crafted my work and style leading me to find focus and expression through creation. They have brought me to the decision to work with black ink and white paper. Increasingly, I am finding that by narrowing myself to work within the frame of these two colors I can widen my ability to portray strong emotion and shifting psychological states. Through this form I am able to depict, dramatize, and even process what I am ...

“Recreating The Tinted Lithograph Using Stones And Photo-Plates”, Beauvais Lyons Sep 2014

“Recreating The Tinted Lithograph Using Stones And Photo-Plates”, Beauvais Lyons

The Mid-America Print Council Conference

This technical demonstration will present a simple and direct approach to combining stone and plate lithography to recreate tinted lithographs common to the first half of the 19th century. My approach is an adaptation of methods described in Michael Twyman’s book The Techniques of Drawing on Stone in England and France and Their Application to Works of Typography (Oxford University Press, 1970). The tinted lithograph uses the same principles as the chiaroscuro woodcut, but is capable of achieving a significantly broad range of tones. It is also a very good method to introduce the principles of color lithography ...

Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins Sep 2014

Salvaging Print: Letterhead In Post-Industrial Urban America, Nancy Sharon Collins

The Mid-America Print Council Conference

This panel will explore the link between today’s small press movement and the formal aspects of commercial printing during the American 20th century. Panelists include Christine Medley , Philip Gattuso, and Nancy Bernardo.

Using as its primary example letterhead from defunct companies in Detroit, and secondarily, specimens of business and legal letterhead from other urban centers of the industrial United States, this panel will examine and discuss: What did letterhead represent to 20th century printers in local markets such as Detroit? What is the significance of printed letterhead, and stationery, to the art of small press printing in post-industrial cities ...
