The Contribution To And Affect Of Design And Architecture On Health & Activity Promotion (H&Ap) In The Workplace, Krystal L. Schumacher

Theses from the Architecture Program

Expanding the research and awareness on the contribution to and affect of design and architecture on health and activity promotion in the workplace (h&ap) is essential in moving forward in the design of working environments. As humans, we spend the majority of our time indoors, for an average American adult he or she spends the majority of the day in a working environment. The impact that our spaces have is much deeper than the aesthetic. Our environments can depict how we act, feel and operate based on the design of our surroundings. Through this research, the goal was to ...

Baye Fadioul Niang: A Brief Biography Of An Ebeniste In Senegal, Katie J. Niang

Interior Design: Student Creative Activity

Baye Fadioul Niang described himself as a traditional European designer of wood furniture, doors, and trim. In 1945, at age 22, Fadioul began designing furniture as an apprentice in the state labor department of Kaolack. He settled in Dakar, where Fadioul not only designed and constructed furniture, but was a popular informal educator in the business. His furniture shop became a center for education in Menuserie and Ebenisterie, which is the art of furniture making. In 2005 Fadioul retired from furniture making because of deteriorating eyesight.

From Ashes To Architecture: Memorialization At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Sara Elyse Kaplan Apr 2013

From Ashes To Architecture: Memorialization At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Sara Elyse Kaplan

Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)

Buchenwald concentration camp, located in Weimar, Germany, was a place of suffering, cruelty and death during World War II and during the first five years of the cold war. As many were tortured and perished there, it has since become a place of remembrance. Being one of the few concentration camps to not be destroyed by the Nazis before they could be liberated, since its final closure in 1950 numerous memorials have been erected to commemorate the events that took place and the people who fell victim to those events. Following several theorists four of the memorials at Buchenwald are ...

Quantum Man, Julian Voss-Andreae Mar 2013

Quantum Man, Julian Voss-Andreae

The STEAM Journal

According to quantum physics, the world is fundamentally quite different than it seems. Drawing inspiration from the underlying nature of reality, former quantum physicist Julian Voss-Andreae created an image of a walking human as a quantum object. Made up of parallel sheets of steel, the sculpture is a metaphor for the counter-intuitive world of quantum physics. Symbolizing the dual nature of matter with the appearance of classical reality on the surface and cloudy quantum behavior underneath, the sculpture seems to consist of solid steel when seen from the front, but dissolves into almost nothing when seen from the side.

Canvas And Catalyst: Reinventing Urban Space, Ricardo A. Borges Jan 2013

Canvas And Catalyst: Reinventing Urban Space, Ricardo A. Borges

Masters Theses 1911 - February 2014

As an intervention strategy set amid a stark and neglected, yet highly energized urban setting of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this project seeks to relieve a stagnating urban condition through the introduction of contemporary and dynamic forms of expression. Skateboarding and street art can be seen as interpretative modes of action that reinvent objects, spaces, and conditions within the urban landscape, lending creative and engaging gestures to the everyday. As (sub) cultural expressions in their own right, these practices transcend their mere formal representations, and present unique identities, spaces, and modes of engagement within a society, initiating a creative mindset and DIY ...

The Developing Role Of The University Library As A Student Learning Commons: Implications To The Interior Spaces Within, Nicole Kay Peterson Jan 2013

The Developing Role Of The University Library As A Student Learning Commons: Implications To The Interior Spaces Within, Nicole Kay Peterson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The university library has developed into a center of learning and collaboration that can truly become the heart of campus within the university community (Hisle, 2005). Third places are "public places on neutral ground where people can gather and interact. The character of a third place is determined most of all by its regular clientele and is marked by a playful mood, which contrasts with people's more serious involvement in other spheres" (Oldenburg, 1989). The library is neither home nor work, but a "third place" for students to study and socialize (Codispoti and Frey, 2007).

Recent trends in the ...

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow Dec 2012

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow

Lauren L. Gallow

You know the café I’m talking about. The one where the lighting is just right, the music is just low enough, the furniture is cozy, and the coffee mugs fit perfectly in your hand. But the reason you love this café isn’t so much about the furniture or the décor as it is about the feeling you get when you spend time there. Corey Kingston and Samantha Albert knew there was something special about Nordic cafés the first time they stepped into a coffee shop in Denmark. Their book TAKK: Explorations of Nordic Café Culture tells the story ...
