Community-Based Museum Ecologies: Public Doors And Windows And Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (‘The New Patrons’), Mark W. Rectanus Jul 2019

Community-Based Museum Ecologies: Public Doors And Windows And Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (‘The New Patrons’), Mark W. Rectanus

Mark W. Rectanus

A growing number of artist-led initiatives and para-institutional organizations are creating community-based projects that signal the emergence of alternative museum ecologies. This article will examine two initiatives, Public Doors and Windows (PDW) and Les Nouveaux Commanditaires (NC) (‘The New Patrons’) that reflect a diverse range of practices that contribute to, or create, museum ecologies outside the physical and conceptual spaces of museums. These museum ecologies also contribute to discourses on the participatory museum and intersect with experiments in community engagement and social practice. Although they may have distinct conceptual points of departure, the diverse institutional platforms and initiatives of PDW ...

Design Prototyping Methods: State Of The Art In Strategies, Techniques, And Guidelines, Bradley Camburn, Vimal Viswanathan, Julie S. Linsey, David Anderson, Daniel D. Jensen, Richard H. Crawford, Kevin Otto, Kristin Wood Dec 2016

Design Prototyping Methods: State Of The Art In Strategies, Techniques, And Guidelines, Bradley Camburn, Vimal Viswanathan, Julie S. Linsey, David Anderson, Daniel D. Jensen, Richard H. Crawford, Kevin Otto, Kristin Wood

Vimal Viswanathan

Prototyping is interwoven with nearly all product, service, and systems development efforts. A prototype is a pre-production representation of some aspect of a concept or final design. Prototyping often predetermines a large portion of resource deployment in development and influences design project success. This review surveys literature sources in engineering, management, design science, and architecture. The study is focused around design prototyping for early stage design. Insights are synthesized from critical review of the literature: key objectives of prototyping, critical review of major techniques, relationships between techniques, and a strategy matrix to connect objectives to techniques. The review is supported ...

Lightweight Material Prototypes Using Dense Bundled Systems To Emulate An Ambient Environment, Chris Knapp, Jonathan Nelson, Andrew Kudless, Sascha Bohnenberger

Jonathan J Nelson

This paper describes and reflects upon a computational design and digital fabrication research project that was developed and implemented over 2014-2015, with subsequent development continuing for applications at present. The aim of the research was to develop methods of modelling, analysis, and fabrication that facilitate integrative approaches to architectural design and construction. In this context, the development of material prototypes, digital simulations, and parametric frameworks were pursued in parallel in order to inform and reform successive iterations throughout the process, leading to a refined workflow for engineering, production, and speculation upon future directions of the work.

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher Dec 2015

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

Sketching is one of the earliest known forms of communication. It’s a record of thoughts, ideas and visions. It may sound simple, but it’s actually quite complex, because the expression of sketching varies according to an individual’s personal style, visual thinking and imagination, and is also related to one’s context and culture.  Sketching is a form of auto-reflection that encourages the mirroring of events that may not be noticed by the conscious mind, and daydreams that occur frequently in different working and life settings. For architects, these sketches can reveal the desire for a different and ...

Architecture That Bows.Pdf, Andreas Luescher Dec 2015

Architecture That Bows.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

This paper examines the museum dedicated to Pierre Soulages and its relationship with Soulages, the city of Rodez, the Forirail Garden (which is the site of the museum), and the ideas and practices realized by Catalan architects Rafael Aranda, Carme Pigem and Ramon Vilalta (RCR). The Musée Soulages is defined by the color black and the luminous fluidity of steel as designed by RCR Arquitectes; it is also aligned with an environmentalecology that literally and figuratively represents the town of Rodez with its Notre-Dame Cathedral. The central thesis is that the Musée Soulages inducts the visitor into a role ...

Design Epilogues, Andreas Luescher Apr 2014

Design Epilogues, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

The booklet tries to explain the generally unrecognized aspect of a studio experience that stitches together the most salient elements of the individual design projects into one coherent narrative. Design epilogues attempt to borrow something from each project that can be used to create something new.

The General Model Of Creative Strategy In Architectural Design, Farhad Shariat Rad, Hamid Nadimi

Farhad Shariat Rad

Studying behaviour and thoughts of expert designers is regarded as one of the most important areas in design research, and applying the results of it could have effective implication for design education. In one of these researches the creative approaches applied by three professional designers...

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow Dec 2012

Takk: Explorations Of Nordic Cafe Culture, Book Proposal, Lauren L. Gallow

Lauren L. Gallow

You know the café I’m talking about. The one where the lighting is just right, the music is just low enough, the furniture is cozy, and the coffee mugs fit perfectly in your hand. But the reason you love this café isn’t so much about the furniture or the décor as it is about the feeling you get when you spend time there. Corey Kingston and Samantha Albert knew there was something special about Nordic cafés the first time they stepped into a coffee shop in Denmark. Their book TAKK: Explorations of Nordic Café Culture tells the story ...

Sources Of Architectural Design Ideation A Reflection On The Ideation Process Of Eight Iranian Professional Architects, Hamid Nadimi, Farhad Shariat Rad Dec 2011

Sources Of Architectural Design Ideation A Reflection On The Ideation Process Of Eight Iranian Professional Architects, Hamid Nadimi, Farhad Shariat Rad

Farhad Shariat Rad

Preliminary design ideas, mostly not manifest, are generated in the designers’ minds at the very early stages of their encounter with the design problems. This paper reports a study of the sources from which these ideas are originated, and the corresponding role each source plays in the process of designing. The study was undertaken through the analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight Iranian professional architects about the ideation process of at least one of their design projects. To complement the data gathered through interviews, each interview was followed by a discussion session within a group of graduate architecture students, reflecting ...

What Is, What Will Be And How It Should Be, Tobias Bernecker Dec 2010

What Is, What Will Be And How It Should Be, Tobias Bernecker

Tobias Bernecker

Drawings talk about more than just a building project, or an idea. They provide an insight into the means of production, the creators mind and the medial environment. Drawings are also instruments of communication and not only construction blue prints. They can bridge the gap in between what is, what will be and how it should be.

Cognitive Heuristics In Design: Instructional Strategies To Increase Creativity In Idea Generation, Seda Yilmaz, C. M. Seifert, R. Gonzalez Jun 2010

Cognitive Heuristics In Design: Instructional Strategies To Increase Creativity In Idea Generation, Seda Yilmaz, C. M. Seifert, R. Gonzalez

Seda McKilligan

This paper explores the use of heuristics as cognitive strategies invoked during the process of design. Heuristics are reasoning processes that do not guarantee the best solution, but often lead to potential solutions by providing a simple cognitive “shortcut.” We propose that designers use specific design heuristics to explore the problem space of potential designs, leading to the generation of creative solutions. We test whether design heuristics can
be taught to novices, and suggest their use will facilitate the design process at multiple levels of instruction. In the present empirical study, we evaluate a set of six instructional heuristics and ...

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson Dec 2002

Storage Of Architectural Materials At The Syracuse University Library, Peter D. Verheyen, Carolyn Davis, Debra Olson

Peter D Verheyen

When the Department of Special Collections at the Syracuse University Library acquired the papers of Werner Seligmann, an architect and former Dean of the Syracuse University School of Architecture, the opportunity presented itself to develop a model storage system that could be applied to the other architectural drawings in the Department. While not large in comparison to these other collections, the Seligmann Papers were sizable enough to give us a better understanding of the storage issues involved if we decided to undertake the task of re-housing our other drawings. If such a task were to be undertaken, a new storage ...
