The Independent Press After The "Moroccan Spring", Hamza Tayebi Jul 2015

The Independent Press After The "Moroccan Spring", Hamza Tayebi

Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Multidisciplinary Studies

The wave of Arab Spring that started in Tunisia and Egypt arrived to Morocco in 2011 paving the way to unprecedented organized mass-protests all over the country. Among the demands raised by the 20 February Movement protesters was the demand for free and independent media outlets, especially the press. King Mohammed VI, the Commander of the Faithful and the highest authority in Morocco, promised in a televised speech on March 9th to introduce "radical" and "genuine" constitutional reforms that would democratize the country. In fact, King Mohammed VI has so far succeeded in calming down and co-opting the demonstrations, but ...

Political Islamism In Tunisia: A History Of Repression And A Complex Forum For Potential Change, Sarah R. Louden Apr 2015

Political Islamism In Tunisia: A History Of Repression And A Complex Forum For Potential Change, Sarah R. Louden

Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Multidisciplinary Studies

This paper argues that the growth and legalization of Political Islamism in Tunisia will naturally hinder the contemporary influence of violent extremism, leading to partnership and inclusion within a Democratic government. The basis for this claim rests on the idea that the condemnation and repression of Political Islamism in Tunisia historically backfired and led to the further underground radicalization of Tunisians, along with scores of human rights abuses by authorities. Specifically, this essay will focus on the moderate Islamist party Ennahda, the Salafist party Ansar al-Sharia, and their complex relationship to each other as well as to domestic and regional ...

Reference And Pedagogical Resources For 'Standard' Somali, Christopher Green, Michelle E. Morrison, Nikki B. Adams, Erin Smith Crabb, Evan Jones, Valerie Novak

Electronic Journal of Africana Bibliography

This annotated bibliography compiles and accounts for the current state of knowledge on Somali, with a particular focus on characteristics of the ‘standard,’ northern variety of the language. The purpose of undertaking this work is to complement our own ongoing descriptive work on Somali with the goal of producing a comprehensive, contemporary reference grammar for the language. We include in this bibliography all published materials (e.g. journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings) on standard Somali known to us, as well as a number of unpublished materials (e.g. conference talks, theses, dissertations) to which we have been able to ...

Islam And Qur'anic Figures In Africa: Prophets, Sages And Disciples, Abdin Chande Jan 2012

Islam And Qur'anic Figures In Africa: Prophets, Sages And Disciples, Abdin Chande

Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Multidisciplinary Studies

This is but a humble attempt to frame a discussion on Islam, prophetic voices and geographical spaces in Africa as territorial canvasses for sketching out Islam's sacred history. This way of thinking or conceptualizing about Africa is not as fashionable among Muslim Qur'anic scholars as it is among black Biblical theologians. Yet, this is not to suggest that the approach of this study is grounded in the Afro-centered methodology. Such an approach has its own place and serves certain ideological and cultural functions especially within a given African American diasporic scholarship. Rather, the aim of this research is ...

Aspects Of Mossi History: A Bibliography, Amy Niang Jan 2012

Aspects Of Mossi History: A Bibliography, Amy Niang

Electronic Journal of Africana Bibliography

This bibliography provides the basis for a research survey on the political, ideological, economic, and cultural aspects of the Mossi states. As such, it focuses on historical writings pertaining to the « precolonial » history of the Mossi states, particularly those of Ouagadougou, Tenkodogo and Yatenga, as well as their satellite states. I have included a number of references that pertain to the history of Mamprusi, Dagomba states, and the so-called « stateless societies », in so far as they inform an understanding of historical processes that marked the institutional development of the Mossi states.

The first section covers text publications on Mossi history ...
