John's Usage Of Ἐρωτάω And Αἰτέω: A Theological Distinction, David Haggard Dec 2016

John's Usage Of Ἐρωτάω And Αἰτέω: A Theological Distinction, David Haggard

School of Divinity Master’s Theses and Projects

This work systematically examines the usage of ἐρωτάω and αἰτέω in Gospel of John in order to unveil the nuanced distinction between the words. Particular focus is placed on the Greek text of John 16:23, in which both ἐρωτάω and αἰτέω are used in distinct ways. The history of interpretation of ἐρωτάω and αἰτέω is presented from the patristic to modern biblical exegesis in order to give the work an historical framework. Then the various theological and literary concerns of the Fourth Gospel are related to John’s usage of the word. Topics such as the divinity of Christ ...

Cross-Cultural Sharing Of Spirituality, John Skrzypaszek Nov 2016

Cross-Cultural Sharing Of Spirituality, John Skrzypaszek

John Skrzypaszek

This paper explores the nature of the Australian Aborigine and Christian spirituality. It demonstrates that the indigenous spirituality shows a strong tie between the spiritual realm and life's journey. The cultural symbolism, which reflects cosmology, shows that the mystical nature of the spiritual journey is deeply immersed in the totality of the Aboriginal life and consciousness. The study recognizes that the Aboriginal and Christian worldviews are distinctly different. However, it argues that the Aboriginal Christian spirituality may be enhanced by the qualities embedded in its indigenous roots. The study demonstrates that, at the point where propositional creed-based structure of ...

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt Oct 2016

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the beliefs and practices of Chinese Christians and their American missionary counterparts in the Republic of China (1912-1949). Between the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the rise of the People's Republic, the Chinese people seriously reexamined politics, religion, and their relationship with the West. Many scholars claim that Chinese people could not completely understand and accept Christianity due to insurmountable cultural differences. I would argue religious misunderstanding did not befall our historical subjects the Chinese Christians; rather misunderstanding has plagued the modern scholar. Misunderstanding did not arise from a centuries old cultural mindset. Instead, Sino-Christianity ...

Crossing The Waters: Following Jesus Through The Storms, The Fish, The Doubt, And The Seas, Leslie (Leyland) Fields Oct 2016

Crossing The Waters: Following Jesus Through The Storms, The Fish, The Doubt, And The Seas, Leslie (Leyland) Fields

Alumni Book Gallery

The gospels are dramatic, wild, and wet―set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus’ first disciples were ragtag fishermen, and Jesus’ messages and miracles teem with water, fish, fishermen, net-breaking catches, sea crossings, boat-sinking storms, and even a walk on water. Because this world is foreign and distant to us, we’ve missed much about the disciples’ experiences and about following Jesus―until now. Leslie Leyland Fields―a well-known writer, respected biblical exegete, and longtime Alaskan fisherwoman―crosses the waters of time and culture to take us out on the Sea of ...

The God Dimension In Leadership, Erich Baumgartner Sep 2016

The God Dimension In Leadership, Erich Baumgartner

Journal of Applied Christian Leadership

One of the most challenging insights of the servant leadership approach for christian leaders is the fact that god himself chose to approach humanity that way. Christian theology has long maintained that who god is determines how he acts. Jesus dying on the cross for humanity reminds us of the inexhaustible mystery that by his very nature god is a servant. the nature of god—more specifically his Trinitarian nature—is the central paradigm of thought in this issue of JACL. Does God’s Trinitarian nature have anything to say to Christian leaders about leadership? Get ready for some meaty ...
