Replacing The Patient: The Fiction Of Prosthetics In Medical Practice, Laura L. Behling Mar 2005

Replacing The Patient: The Fiction Of Prosthetics In Medical Practice, Laura L. Behling

Scholarship and Professional Work of the Associate Provosts

The invention of computer simulations used for practicing surgical maneuvers in a video game-like format has an ancestry in the artificial limbs of history and is reflected, grotesquely, in Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Man That Was Used Up ". The nineteenth century worked to ensure that the incomplete body did indeed retain a sense of self by creating prostheses to mimic corporeal wholeness. Our present-day technology seems intent on doing precisely the opposite, deliberately fragmenting the body and challenging our understanding of the body and the prosthetic.

Economic Migration And Justice, Harry Van Der Linden Jan 2005

Economic Migration And Justice, Harry Van Der Linden

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Our main thesis is that the U.S. has a duty of justice to adopt an open border policy with regard to economic migrants because it is significantly responsible for the unjust social and economic conditions that bring such migrants to its borders. From this perspective, President Bush’s recent “guest worker” proposal is morally objectionable because it is designed more to serve U.S. business interests than the interests of the migrants. We address three objections to opening borders: it will worsen the economic condition especially of low-skilled native workers; it will harm developing countries by increasing the so-called ...

"Can Women Become Priests?": A Catholic Feminist Perspective, Susan A. Ross Jan 2005

"Can Women Become Priests?": A Catholic Feminist Perspective, Susan A. Ross

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

Can women become priests? The answer to this question depends on whom you ask. For many Protestants, the answer is both yes and no. The only priest is Jesus Christ and all Christian share in the priesthood. As Luther wrote, we are all priests to one another, but there is no special ministry of priesthood that makes one person distinct from others. There are pastors, people who are called to preach and lead worship, but they are not priests. Luther, of course, did not consider women able to be pastors, but his followers (at least the non-Wisconsin or non-Missouri Synod ...

Viewpoint: Joy And Sorrow, Swami Tyagananda

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

The United Ministries at Harvard is an interfaith coalition of forty chaplains representing twenty-nine ministries; twenty-one of these are Christian from various denominations, two are Jewish, and there is one each from Hindu, Buddhist, Humanist, Islamic, and Zoroastrian traditions. It is a vibrant group and there is much collegiality among the chaplains. As the Hindu chaplain at Harvard, I deeply value not only the friendship that we share in the group but also the opportunities I get to meet and learn from authentic representatives of so many spiritual traditions.

Mimamsa And Eucharist: Starting-Points For Postmodern Hindu-Christian Comparative Theology Of Ritual, Michael T. Mclaughlin Jan 2005

Mimamsa And Eucharist: Starting-Points For Postmodern Hindu-Christian Comparative Theology Of Ritual, Michael T. Mclaughlin

Journal of Hindu-Christian Studies

My interest in the topic of Mimamsa and ritual comes from an involvement with the kind of comparative theology that Francis Clooney has been pursuing. I have tried to comment a bit on some of his books, and so it was natural to take a look at his early book, a rather technical one, called Thinking Ritually. Clooney has been concerned with reading strategies in interpretation, and I would say that my reading skill when it comes to Mimamsa and studies of it is very rudimentary. Mimamsa deals with the way grammatical constructions determine the meaning of ritual injunctions. My ...
