Luke 15: The Heart Of God, Terry N. Barnes Dec 2005

Luke 15: The Heart Of God, Terry N. Barnes

SOR Faculty Publications and Presentations

The fifteenth chapter of Luke recounts a contentious exchange between Jesus and the Pharisees, a confrontation where the Pharisees essentially attacked the moral character of Christ. After all, he accepted the company of wretched sinners.

In response to this grumbling, Jesus told them “this parable” (Luke 15:3). Yet what followed was not one but rather three stories: the story of the lost lamb, the lost coin, and what is commonly but incorrectly known as the prodigal son.

Yet these three stories are merely a three time recounting of a unified message. They were told to the same audience, they ...

Functional Diversity, Eric M. Brown Dec 2005

Functional Diversity, Eric M. Brown

Doctor of Ministry

The question at the heari of this dissertation is, "can it be different?" The "it" is the way church is organized, worship happens, and the very flavor of the church in the United Methodist Church in Oregon and Idaho. Today, church is generally organized following the traditional Anglo experience. The hymns, food, and organizational patterns generally follow the patterns of the white, English-speaking majority in the churches. A different formula would be one that is more multicultural and multiethnic. In this dissertation, the different way of organizing and thinking of church is called functional diversity.

Functional diversity is explored through ...

Spirituality In The Parochial And Plain Sermons Of John Henry Newman, Richard St Clair Johnson Nov 2005

Spirituality In The Parochial And Plain Sermons Of John Henry Newman, Richard St Clair Johnson

Theses

John Henry Newman was a renowned preacher especially in his years as an Anglican priest. This thesis aims to see what spiritual counsel he was preaching to his Anglican congregations and why he was so successful. For reasons of practicality it is limited to an examination of his principal collection of sermons, the eight volumes of Parochial and Plain Sermons which are pastoral sermons selected by Newman himself from those he delivered as an Anglican priest. It begins with some background on Newman himself and the religious context of England in the early 19th century. It also considers the basic ...

Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D. Nov 2005

Jewish Perspective, Asher Finkel Ph.D.

Rabbi Asher Finkel, Ph.D.

Almost two millennia of confrontation, vilification and recrimination marked the relationship of the offspring Christianity and its mother religion, Judaism from the first century. Now, a new chapter of the encounter has opened since Vatican II with a papal declaration on the relation of the Church to Judaism and to non-Christian religions. A meaningful dialogue of mutual respect was pursued that led to the apologetic reconciliation and positive reorientation to the common Biblical tradition of Jews and Christians. The encounter has now changed from past relationship of disputation and intolerance to seeking understanding from the ground of faith in canonical ...

Start Well To Finish Well: A Holistic Formation Model For Emerging Christian Leaders, Guy Michael Chmieleski

Doctor of Ministry

The ISSUE: How do we model, and help students to "start well' in life, and ministry, such that they can form healthy patterns and habits that will promote growth and fruit throughout their lives, as well as "finish weir without having to deal with issues of burn-out or moral failure? In order to strategically equip our leaders of tomorrow I will create a holistic formation model for the emerging Christian leaders. In section two of this project, I will make the claim that there are significant elements of a holistic spiritual formation model that can be found lives of Joseph ...

Being Effective Church In Rapidly Growing Coastal Towns, Geoffrey Martyn Smith Oct 2005

Being Effective Church In Rapidly Growing Coastal Towns, Geoffrey Martyn Smith

Theses

Since the 1960s Australia has experienced a significant demographic shift as large numbers of people have moved from rural areas and large cities to take up residence in small coastal towns. The resulting populations have a number of distinctive features which make them both a challenge and an opportunity for the Church as it seeks to minister effectively. The underlying proposition of this thesis is that since there are distinctive demographic features of these towns, and since the church is called to minister effectively, there may well be approaches or ministry philosophies which enable the church to be more effective ...

Connexions: Models For Creative Collaboration Between Church And Academy In The Twenty-First Century, Anthony L. Blair Oct 2005

Connexions: Models For Creative Collaboration Between Church And Academy In The Twenty-First Century, Anthony L. Blair

Doctor of Ministry

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the historic relationship between church and academy (defined as Christian higher education). Although certain external forces, including the decline in denominational identity, the power of market forces, and the growing philosophical/theological tensions between the lectern and the pulpit, have driven the academy and the church apart in recent decades, the claim of this study is that these same forces can be harnessed to draw them together in a more collaborative relationship in the twenty-first century.

Chapter One delineates the scope and nature of Christian higher education in North America, through both ...

Revelation And The Left Behind Novels, Craig R. Koester Jul 2005

Revelation And The Left Behind Novels, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

The Left Behind novels appeal because they affirm God's control of history in the face of violence and moral decay. Our challenge is to be more biblical than Left Behind, not less biblical to hear Revelation's call to persevere in the face of evil and to trust in the final victory of God and the Lamb.
