Identifying Some Characteristics Of Children's Spirituality In Australian Catholic Primary Schools: A Study Within Hermeneutic Phenomenology, Brendan Hyde Dec 2005

Identifying Some Characteristics Of Children's Spirituality In Australian Catholic Primary Schools: A Study Within Hermeneutic Phenomenology, Brendan Hyde

Theses

This qualitative research study aimed to identify, through classroom observation and conversation, some characteristics of children's spirituality in Australian Catholic primary schools. In the context of this study, spirituality was described as an essential human trait. While much of the recent literature in the field describes spirituality in terms of connectedness and relationality, in this study spirituality was described as a movement towards Ultimate Unity (de Souza, 2004a, 2004b), whereby at the deepest and widest levels of connectedness, an individual's true Self may experience unity with Other. Spirituality was also described as the outward expression of such unity ...

From The Sacred Heart To The Heart Of The Sacred: The Spiritual Journey Of Australian Catholics Since The Second Vatican Council, Paul William Cashen Jun 2005

From The Sacred Heart To The Heart Of The Sacred: The Spiritual Journey Of Australian Catholics Since The Second Vatican Council, Paul William Cashen

Theses

This study was undertaken to investigate and to propose a solution to the pastoral dilemma that faced the Catholic Church in Australia the 1990's. The pastoral dilemma contrasted two opposing pastoral responses to the significant changes in Catholic life since the Second Vatican Council. One response reacted to the changes by interpreting them as 'crises of faith'. This response determined that the decline in mass attendance, the fewer vocations to the priesthood and religious life and the disregard of the teaching authority of the Church was the result of a loss of faith. Consequently, it prescribed a return to ...

Tribulations Of The Patriarch Joseph And Jesus In Greek And Latin Piety, Lawrence Frizzell May 2005

Tribulations Of The Patriarch Joseph And Jesus In Greek And Latin Piety, Lawrence Frizzell

Department of Religion Publications

The dramatic account of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis 37-50 has been the subject of many commentaries and reflections, by both Jews and Christians. How have the questions of crime and forgiveness been treated as a major theme by Christians? From early texts the pious effort to interpret the biblical message into a coherent whole led to a link between Joseph and Jesus. How has this been developed in the first millennium of Christianity? Father Frizzell examined this theme in “Tribulations of the Patriarch Joseph and Jesus in Greek and Latin Piety,” which he originally presented at the Medieval ...

Toward A More Complete Humanism: The Case For Imbuing International Political Service With Humilitas, Anjalie Graham Apr 2005

Toward A More Complete Humanism: The Case For Imbuing International Political Service With Humilitas, Anjalie Graham

Theology Undergraduate Theses

My thesis, coming out of a theological perspective, explores a way for those involved in international service to become more effective in helping solve crises in the world. I first examine the current crisis in Darfur, Sudan as representative of the need for more efficient international service. The situation in this region has been compared to the crisis in Rwanda in 1994 and, similar to its reaction to that crisis, the international community is once again hesitant to put an end to the atrocities. Next, I describe the philosophy of humanism as a means recently used to address such international ...

Justin Martyr And The Logos: A Study Of The Greek And Jewish Influences On The Church Father's Christology, Katherine Greiner Apr 2005

Justin Martyr And The Logos: A Study Of The Greek And Jewish Influences On The Church Father's Christology, Katherine Greiner

Theology Undergraduate Theses

Justin Martyr’s works serve as theological examples of what needs to be engaged and interpreted. Through exploration of his influences and his works, we can come to understand his worldview and how he developed his theological ideas. His development of the Logos Christology can serve as a model for how we can use our own philosophical understanding and language to articulate the Christ event, opening the door to new interpretations and new Christologies that more fully open the person of Christ and the gospel experience to our time. This thesis will explore the world of Justin, the influences on ...

A Comparison Of The Aesthetic Approach Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans-Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois Apr 2005

A Comparison Of The Aesthetic Approach Of Hans-Georg Gadamer And Hans-Urs Von Balthasar, Jason Paul Bourgeois

Marian Library Faculty Publications

Hans-Georg Gadamer (1901-2002), the German philosopher of hermeneutics, has exercised a powerful influence on post-Vatican II Roman Catholic fundamental theology, especially regarding questions of the development of doctrine and the appropriation of tradition. There is a tension in interpreting Gadamer's thought between his concept of "fusion of horizons," in which the horizon of the past is fused with the horizon of the present to yield new interpretations of past texts, and his defense of "prejudice, authority, classics, and tradition," in which Gadamer upholds the enduring truth-value of received wisdom from the past. … This article will broadly point out the ...
