The purpose of this study was to describe and analyze the perceptions and experiences of selected undergraduate women in engineering majors at Iowa State University. Using qualitative research methods, the researcher described and analyzed the effects of selected educational environment factors on the persistence of women in engineering majors. Educational environment factors that provided the focus for the study included: classroom climate, interaction with faculty and peers, and internal support systems. Related factors that were examined included: personal fit with the major, academic preparation, and career aspirations, and preferred teaching and learning styles and methodologies. From 1942-1945, Iowa State College, like several other universities and colleges, participated in a classified research and development project to build the first atomic bomb. Three federal agencies--the National Defense Research Council (NDRC), the Office of Scientific Research and Development (OSRD), and the Manhattan Engineer District (MED)--funded this atomic weapon project at various times throughout the war. This dissertation is an examination of the administrative apparatus set up on Iowa State College's campus to manage that research and technology development. The purpose of this study was to examine the retention and graduation rates for 125 black students who had enrolled as freshmen at Iowa State University in 1984. The study examined student history data from the university's data base and information on the college experience at Iowa State, based on telephone interviews with 95 former students. The intervention utilized female scientists and engineers to change the attitudes of ninth grade students toward science and math and toward the role of females in technical careers. The purposes of this research were to develop comparable sets of unipolar adjectives for consumer evaluation of fabric hand for English and Korean speakers and to examine how males and females in the United States and Korea use these descriptors. This research also examined preferences of judges for hand of shirt fabrics for the judge's own sex and for the other sex. Ever since the first composition student set stylus to clay tablet, we who teach composition have been blessed with the authority and cursed with the responsibility of evaluating student writing. Blessed because that grant of authority is an acknowledgment from our colleagues, our profession, our institutions, and our students that we can be trusted to fairly and accurately judge the quality of other people's writing. Cursed because that burden of responsibility demands an intensity of effort and an investment of time that are frequently intimidating and always exhausting.
