Free Speech In Pauline Political Theology, David E. Fredrickson Oct 1992

Free Speech In Pauline Political Theology, David E. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

Although it is generally recognized today that Paul’s faith was not a religion of subjectivity, some may nevertheless object to the notion that the apostle’s theology has a political dimension. Surely, it may be said, the sectarian communities which Paul nurtured with the stark contrasts of “outsiders” and “insiders” did not think that their task was to influence public policy in the cities of the Roman empire. While it is of course preposterous to think that the early Christians had Caesar’s ear, influencing public policy is only one way of engaging in politics.

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds Jul 1992

Nephite Uses And Interpretations Of Zenos, Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The allegory of the olive tree attributed to the ancient prophet Zenos and copied from the plates of brass into the small plates by Jacob was a source used by several Book of Mormon prophets. Lehi, Nephi, Jacob, and Alma seemed to be relying on the allegory at several points in the elaboration of their own visions, prophecies, and teachings. This paper provides a systematic documentation of this phenomenon, including passages that have not previously been linked to Zenos. It also demonstrates how the interpretations of the allegory by the earliest Nephite prophets advanced distinctive concepts and language that also ...

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester Jul 1992

The Distant Triumph Song: Music And The Book Of Revelation, Craig R. Koester

Faculty Publications

Music plays a larger role in the book of Revelation than in any other book of the New Testament, and few books in all of Scripture have spawned more hymns sung in Christian worship today. Attention to how the hymnic material in Revelation would have sounded to the Christians who first heard it, to the place of these hymns in Revelation as a whole, and to their relation to the rest of Scripture can help revitalize the singing of the hymns these passages have inspired.

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger May 1992

The Priesthood Of All The Baptized:An Exegetical And Theological Investigation, Thomas Winger

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

For all the emphasis placed on the "priesthood of all believers" as an article of faith, very little critical research has been done into its exegetical, dogmatic, and historical foundations. In his monumental study, John Elliott notes that a detailed exegetical treatment of 1Peter 2 had never before been done in the history of Christianity. 2 Yet he declines any attempt to relate his conclusions to a "dogma" of priesthood. The most extensive historical study, undertaken in two volumes by Cyril Eastwood, attempts to trace the influence of this doctrine in the history of the church, but it fails to ...

The Annals Of Obadiah: A Record Of The Wars And Peace Treaties In The History Of Its Interpretation, Joel Elowsky May 1992

The Annals Of Obadiah: A Record Of The Wars And Peace Treaties In The History Of Its Interpretation, Joel Elowsky

Master of Sacred Theology Thesis

It is the contention of this thesis, that in the war over Obadiah's interpretation, the translator and the historian could, by and large, sign" peace treaties" of agreement. The theologian and the homiletician, however, were engaged in nothing less than a battle to the death. The questions regarding translation and isagogics were two areas where Jewish and Christian interpreters could find much agreement and even help from the other side. The questions regarding fulfillment, significance and application of the text, however, found little if any agreement. If anything, they only helped to fuel the anomysity between the two sides ...

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone May 1992

Assessing Patterns Of Disengagement And Re-Entry In Two Local Congregations Of Churches Of Christ, David Mitchell Malone

Doctor of Ministry Project/Theses

This study investigates two congregations among Churches of Christ with a prototype instrument adapted from questions used in a national survey (The Unchurched American, The Princeton Religion Research Center, 1978). The ministry objective for this project thesis is to generate an assessment instrument to be used as a tool for ministry between active and inactive church members.

Specific questions addressed are: what are the patterns of disengagement and re-entry in two local congregations connected with Churches of Christ? Is the disengagement of teenagers and young adults (age 13-24) in each local congregation measurably greater than other recognized age categories over ...

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus Feb 1992

A Canonical-Critical Study Of Selected Traditions In The Book Of Joel, David D. Pettus

LBTS Faculty Publications and Presentations

The book of Joel presents a myriad of problems to the honest interpreter. For example, the inability to date firmly the book makes it exceedingly difficult to find an original meaning for the work. In addition, the failure of scholars to come to a consensus on the connection between the locust plague and the Day of Yahweh theme in the book exacerbates the interpretive problems further. This dissertation is an attempt to elucidate the meaning of the book of Joel by focusing on the Day of Yahweh and its subthemes in the book via the methodology of canonical criticism. Canonical ...

Introduction To The New Testament: Books That Changed The World, Vincent L. Wimbush Jan 1992

Introduction To The New Testament: Books That Changed The World, Vincent L. Wimbush

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The "New Testament" is the late ancient and modern religious and cultural designation given to the second part of the Christian Bible (in distinction from the "Old Testament," which constitutes the Hebrew Bible). The designation itself (he kaine daitheke, "new covenant," or "new testament") is a religious/theological one, not an historical or literary one descriptive of the character of historical events or literary documents. It is found in a number of passages from the twenty-seven book collection, and in subsequent customary usage first among Christians. The initial reference was not the collection of documents, but to the "new" relationship ...

For The Renewal Of Repentence: The Lukan Texts In Lent, Gary M. Simpson Jan 1992

For The Renewal Of Repentence: The Lukan Texts In Lent, Gary M. Simpson

Faculty Publications

“When our lord and master Jesus Christ said, ‘repent,’ he willed the entire life of believers to be one of repentance.” With these opening words of Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses, the Reformation erupted on the western Christian world. The renewal of repentance has often energized God’s mission and ministry. For instance, one might recall the mission of the eighth-century Hebrew prophets or of John the Baptist or of Peter on Pentecost or even of Jesus himself. The Lukan texts for Lent (Series C) in their distinctive way proffer a renewal of repentance for mission and ministry today.
