Labanotation Of Latvian Folk Dance: Tracing The Story Of Cūkas Driķos Through The Notation Process, Julie Brodie, Valda Vidzemniece, Hannah Russ, Diāna Gavare Mar 2020

Labanotation Of Latvian Folk Dance: Tracing The Story Of Cūkas Driķos Through The Notation Process, Julie Brodie, Valda Vidzemniece, Hannah Russ, Diāna Gavare

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

There are many versions of traditional Latvian dances, so determining what to notate becomes part of the process. Tracing the story of the dance Cūkas driķos [Pigs in a Buckwheat Field] for notation purposes became as valuable as the Labanotation score that resulted. The investigation began with a presentational, newer version of the dance, which led to examining the related contemporary, social versions. These were then compared to descriptions in field notes and historic folk dance publications to try to discern the most traditional version(s). In this journey, Labanotation helped illuminate distinctions between the presentational and the participatory versions ...

Feminist Ecclesiology: A Trinitarian Framework For Transforming The Church's Institutional And Spiritual Life, Stacy Geere Jul 2019

Feminist Ecclesiology: A Trinitarian Framework For Transforming The Church's Institutional And Spiritual Life, Stacy Geere

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

In light of women’s marginal status in church governance and ministry through most of recorded history, feminist trinitarian ecclesiology is needed to transform the church’s institutional and spiritual life. While Vatican II provided the paradigm shift and promising anthropology essential for an egalitarian church, feminist ecclesiology prompts a radical transformation of its hierarchical and patriarchal structures and practices so that it may truly embody the Trinity. Trinitarian life provides practical and radical consequences for Christian life, and provides a model of church marked by relationships of equality, mutuality, unity and reciprocity. It also provides a strong ecclesiological argument ...

More Schools, Larger Schools, Or Both? Patterns Of Enrollment Growth In K12 Catholic Schools Globally, Quentin Wodon May 2019

More Schools, Larger Schools, Or Both? Patterns Of Enrollment Growth In K12 Catholic Schools Globally, Quentin Wodon

Journal of Catholic Education

After the governments of China and India, the Catholic Church is probably the third largest provider of K12 education in the world. How has growth in enrollment in K12 Catholic schools varied across countries over the last two decades? Which countries have accounted for most of the growth at the regional and global level? What has been the role of the number of schools and the size of schools in enrollment growth, or in the decline observed in some countries? Given trends towards higher enrollment in the developing world due to population growth and higher educational attainment, has enrollment growth ...

Tolkien’S Allegory: Using Peter Jackson’S Vision Of Fellowship To Illuminate Male Adolescent Catholic Education, Adam P. Zoeller, Thomas E. Malewitz Ph.D. May 2019

Tolkien’S Allegory: Using Peter Jackson’S Vision Of Fellowship To Illuminate Male Adolescent Catholic Education, Adam P. Zoeller, Thomas E. Malewitz Ph.D.

Journal of Catholic Education

With many of the Catholic student population disengaged from regular ritual experiences their working vocabulary of the prayers and knowledge of the Church is limited. A beneficial bridge for many of these disconnected students, specifically male adolescents has been the use of storytelling in connection to Catholic themes to lay the foundations of ritual and deeper concepts through a more familiar setting. Through media literary, multi-modal instruction and Scripture exegesis adolescents can begin to recognize, understand, and feel a connection with the severity of the sacrifice of the Apostles in following Jesus of Nazareth. This article will offer some insights ...

Journal of Movement Arts Literacy Archive (2013-2019)

The article integrates multi-layered learning and its potential for human development in parallel domains—psycho-motor, cognitive and social-emotional—while focusing on the complex motor coordination that is involved in mastering literacy skills. It presents Eshkol-Wachman Movement Notation (EWMN) and the coordination phenomena that are based on this method and supported by pilot study on the impact of learning EWMN on the development of coordination. The present pilot study provides proof of concept both for its assessment tools and the idea that EWMN may facilitate coordination. Shift Dance Intensive: Developing Dance, Arts And Culture In Hong Kong, Kelsey Marie Ang May 2019

Shift Dance Intensive: Developing Dance, Arts And Culture In Hong Kong, Kelsey Marie Ang

Honors Thesis

Currently, Hong Kong “lags behind” other countries in terms of arts and cultural development (Chow). There is a lack of support for the arts in Hong Kong (Chow; Lee). Although Hong Kong needs world class, high quality performances in order to develop and build arts audiences (Lee), dance training in Hong Kong is inadequate at enabling dancers to reach an international level (Yung). My senior thesis project investigates how to increase dance education opportunities, nurture local talent, develop the artistic community and increase community engagement with dance by developing and executing a summer dance intensive in Hong Kong. My project ...

Every Data Point Counts: Political Elections In The Age Of Digital Analytics, Julian Kehle, Samir Naimi May 2019

Every Data Point Counts: Political Elections In The Age Of Digital Analytics, Julian Kehle, Samir Naimi

Honors Thesis

Synthesizing the investigative research and cautionary messages from experts in the fields of technology, political science, and behavioral science, this project explores the ways in which digital analytics has begun to influence the American political arena. Historically, political parties have constructed systems to target voters and win elections. However, rapid changes in the field of technology (such as big data, artificial intelligence, and the prevalence of social media) threaten to undermine the integrity of elections themselves. Future political campaigns will utilize profiling to micro-target individuals in order to manipulate and persuade them with hyper-personalized political content. Most dangerously, the average ...

Production Design In The Film And Television Space: An Analysis, Kaitlyn N. Ryan, Charles Howard Apr 2019

Production Design In The Film And Television Space: An Analysis, Kaitlyn N. Ryan, Charles Howard

Honors Thesis

Due to the differences between film and television production, the methodologies for doing production design in film and television are necessarily different, as both can fall victim to a number of disparate constraints and limitations that affect the art department. However, a large part of the difference also comes down to the individual designer, as well as the intentions of the film or TV show. To further explain this conclusion, I will give a brief overview of the history and general methodology of production design as a whole. I will then dive into my research on the subject, which includes ...

African-American Male Perceptions On Public Schooling After Discipline: A Contextual Portrait From The Inner City, Kevin William Smith Jr. Apr 2019

African-American Male Perceptions On Public Schooling After Discipline: A Contextual Portrait From The Inner City, Kevin William Smith Jr.

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Literature shows that one of the major issues affecting the achievement of inner-city African- American male students in public-schools is the ineffectiveness of disciplinary procedures. These studies have shown a direct positive relationship between student behavioral problems and academic failure. This study was an attempt at answering Noguera’s (2008) call for understanding more fully how African-American males come to perceive schooling, in particular their discipline experiences, and how environmental and cultural forces impact this perception of their behavior and performance in school. This was a qualitative study that heard the stories of inner-city African-American male students who were pushed ...

Critical Mentorship For Black Girls: An Autoethnography Of Perseverance, Commitment, And Empowerment, Krystal Huff Apr 2019

Critical Mentorship For Black Girls: An Autoethnography Of Perseverance, Commitment, And Empowerment, Krystal Huff

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

Working class Black girls experience multilayered oppression informed by their triadic social identity that sits at the intersection of race, gender, and class in their lives and more specifically in their schooling experiences (Collins, 1986, 1989; Onyeka-Crawford, Patrick, & Chaudry, 2017). A variety of mentoring practices have been adopted among educators throughout the public-school system to remedy the impact of poor educational opportunities for Black girls. In contrast to the use of traditional mentorship practices that solely focus on the individual, critical mentorship seeks to engage and support the cultural, political, and economic contexts that positively shape the experiences and aspirations ...

Understanding The Devil: A Comparative Examination Of Dead Souls, The Master And Margarita, And Revelation 12-3, Thomas "Tj" Kennedy

LMU/LLS Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how the devil is depcicted and characterized in Nikolai Gogol's Dead Souls, Mikhail Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, and Revelation 12-13. By exploring their respective historical situations, I connect how all three depictions are linked to satire; however, I reflect upon the differences between the literary and religious, most notably the grotesque physical portrayals and allusory nature of Revelation. The three texts are given their own sections, each divided into three parts: historical situation, textual analysis, and literary commentary. From this analysis, it is shown that the devil carries with them a history of sins ...

Orpheus And Women On 5th Century Bce Vases, Samantha Burton Mar 2019

Orpheus And Women On 5th Century Bce Vases, Samantha Burton

Honors Thesis

In Greek myth, Orpheus is a musician with incredible talent, his music so beautiful that it charmed the beasts and guardians of the Underworld, and eventually Persephone and Hades themselves, into allowing his dead wife Eurydice to returning to the living realm. When he defied their singular rule of not turning to look back at her and she was then banished to the Underworld forever, Orpheus returned to the mortal realm, began to worship Helios instead of Dionysus, and was promptly killed by Thracian women sent by Dionysus. Alternatively, it has been told that Orpheus, wrought with heartbreak, could not ...
