Flexi Discs: The Audio Format That Time Forgot And Remembered Again, Junior R. Tidal

Publications and Research

Flexi discs, also known as phonosheets and Soundsheets, are “flexible” plastic sheets that can be played on turntables. This audio format was used for a wide variety of purposes including promotional materials, giveaways, and inserts into magazines, stemming from their origins in playable chocolate discs in the early 1900s (Parks, 2018). At one point in time it was a $9 million dollar business, with the U.S. government as one of the top users of the technology (Penchansky, 1979). Their disposable nature, weight, ability to print directly on material, and affordable manufacturing made the flexi disc an alternative to vinyl ...

Communicative Challenges Of Reintegrating Veterans, Arnaldo Gallegos Apr 2019

Communicative Challenges Of Reintegrating Veterans, Arnaldo Gallegos

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

Research shows that communication in the transition from active duty to military veteran provides several challenges. Communication on active duty is reported as clear and explicit in its hierarchic relations. Communication with civilians can at first be cryptic and only implicitly hierarchic. On active duty, a service member relies on the chain of command for medical needs. Afterwards, veterans must take initiative to ensure healthcare needs are met. Veterans communicating about employment must put military experience into terms that civilian employers understand or risk settling for less prestigious and lower paying jobs in the civilian workforce.

Mentality: Promoting Social Change Through Design, Rommel Ballesteros

Creative Activity and Research Day - CARD

In “Mentality: Promoting Social Change Through Design,” I will discuss design’s potential to spark discussion and inspire social change. These themes will be explored through the examination of Mentality, a concept for a men’s self-care kit, which aims to normalize and promote the awareness of mental health while also bringing to light certain gender disparities in attitudes towards such topics. Through this analysis, I hope to demonstrate the importance of curated aesthetics in everyday life as a powerful tool for social change, as well as to highlight the designer’s responsibility to be aware of the implications and ...

Modernizing the “Hermit Kingdom”:

Bridging the Cultural and Economic Gap through Soft Power Diplomacy

In the wake of continued economic strife, shifting East Asian political dynamics, and insecure power consolidation, Kim appeared in the international scene with a different attitude: eagerness for dialogue. Such change in Pyongyang’s political stance engenders renewed hope ...

Vocalización O Desconsonantización, Orlando Alba

Faculty Publications

The Japanese Way In America: A Comparison Of The Religious Beliefs, Habits, And Ideas Of The American Religious 'Nones' And Contemporary Japanese Nationals, Jarrett Stalinger

Scholar Week 2016 - present

There has been growing interest in the religiously unaffiliated within America. This growing interest has caused a new name to come about, the Nones. The present discussion attempts to give context to the rise of the Nones and to compare the religious beliefs and habits of these American Nones with the Japanese Nationals who inhabit Japan. A Tale Of Two Bonnies: Comparing “Lost Cause” Narratives And Post-War Memory From The American Civil War And The 1745 Jacobite Rebellion Through Art, William Robert Tharp

Student Scholar Showcase

In the cultures of Scotland after the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion and the American South after the Civil War, defeatist memories and art featured prominently in mythmaking and served as a focal point for many who wished to make political statements or critiques of current realities. In Scotland, romanticism revolving around “Bonnie Prince Charlie” and the Jacobites in 1745 lessened the burden of defeat for many. Contextualizing their loss within a broader historical framework, which stressed different features depending on the group’s purpose, some Scots utilized Jacobite memory as a potent political critique of Scotland’s place within Great Britain ...
