In the first anthology of its kind, Thomas O'Brien and Scott Paeth have gathered unique pieces from across religious perspectives to illustrate the growing influence and contribution of religion to the field of business ethics. The Gods Drink Whiskey: Stumbling Toward Enlightenment In The Land Of The Tattered Buddha, Stephen Asma Apr 2006

The Gods Drink Whiskey: Stumbling Toward Enlightenment In The Land Of The Tattered Buddha, Stephen Asma

Stephen T Asma

Asma, a professor of Buddhism at Columbia College in Chicago and the author of Stuffed Animals and Pickled Heads (2001), recounts his intense and revelatory Cambodian adventures while teaching at Phnom Penh's Buddhist Institute. In an electrifying and frank mix of hair-raising anecdotes and expert analysis, he explicates the vast difference between text-based Buddhist teachings and daily life in a poor and politically volatile Buddhist society. Amid tales of massage parlors, marijuana-spiced pizza, and bloodshed, he cogently explains how Theravada Buddhism, the form practiced throughout Southeast Asia, differs from the Buddhism Westerners are familiar with, and how entwined it ...

"Making Enemies: The Imagination Of Torture In Chile And The U.S.", William Cavanaugh Dec 2005

"Making Enemies: The Imagination Of Torture In Chile And The U.S.", William Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

Through a comparison of the use of torture by Chile under General Pinochet and the United States in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Guantánamo Bay, the author argues that one of torture's primary purposes is the fostering of a certain kind of social imagination of who our enemies are. The author then briefly suggests how communities of faith can resist this imagination.

A Visionary People: Religion And The Visual Arts, Kelly Baker

Kelly J. Baker

Faith in America, Publisher's Description: With an influx of immigrants from Asia, Latin America, and other regions, the diversity of religion has grown to include Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, and other faiths. Latin American and African American communities have experienced changes in the ways they practice their faith and in turn influence American culture in general. Women have entered the clergy in record numbers, and the push for allowing women and gays to enter the clergy in religions that limit or prohibit their roles is on the increase. Jews And Catholics In Catholic Poland: A Beleaguered Church In The Post Reformation Era, Magda Teter Dec 2005

Jews And Catholics In Catholic Poland: A Beleaguered Church In The Post Reformation Era, Magda Teter

Magda Teter

My first book, Jews and Heretics in Catholic Poland: A Beleaguered Church in the Post Reformation Era (Cambridge University Press, 2006, pbk 2009), introduced Jews into a traditional Polish narrative of post-Reformation Poland that had been grounded in a Catholic-Protestant dichotomy, allowing me to reposition the role of Jews and other non-Catholics in multicultural Poland in a completely new way. My approach has broadened the context of Poland’s religious history and has revealed the superficiality of the re-Catholicization of the ruling elites, whose economic interests triumphed over their religious loyalties, challenging the view of the “triumph of the Counter-Reformation ...
