Emerging Identities In Colonial Tunisia: "Alliancist" And Zionist Representations In Tunis Prior To World War I, Joy Land Dec 2015

Emerging Identities In Colonial Tunisia: "Alliancist" And Zionist Representations In Tunis Prior To World War I, Joy Land

Joy A. Land PhD

By 1900 the Jewish community of Tunisia witnessed the emergence of new competing identities: “assimilationist” of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, termed “Alliancist,” and Zionist. Strikingly, two members of the same family in Tunis, Raymond Valensi, President of the AIU Regional Committee, and Alfred Valensi, President of the Zionist Federation, led the struggle for their separate causes. In his discussion of identity in the modern world, Homi Bhabha asks, "How do strategies of representation or empowerment come to be formulated in the competing claims of communities…where, despite shared histories of …discrimination, the exchange of values, meanings and priorities…may be ...

Resolving A Tension, Kenneth Rosenzweig Jun 2015

Resolving A Tension, Kenneth Rosenzweig

Kenneth Y. Rosenzweig

I went to Augsburg, Germany, this summer for an accounting research project and for a broader purpose — to get to know contemporary Germans and to learn how they think, especially about the Jewish people. I have always felt a tension between my feelings about Germany and those about being Jewish. In high school and college in the late 1950s and early 1960s, as I studied the German language, I developed a great respect for German culture. Yet, brought up with an extensive Jewish education, I understand how many American Jews visiting Europe resist even traveling to Germany, feeling such visits ...

Understanding The Haggadah: The Step-By-Step Seder Companion, Andrew Blitman

Andrew Blitman

A sleek and simple 15-step guide to understanding the celebration of Passover, "Understanding the Haggadah" is meant to be read as a companion to the traditional Pesach Haggadah. Esteemed Jewish sources (primarily the Kabbalah and Talmud) are used to succinctly explain the purpose of each step of the Passover Seder. A must-read for the Passover Seder.

Hermann Cohen And The Jewish Jesus, Robert Erlewine Dec 2013

Hermann Cohen And The Jewish Jesus, Robert Erlewine

Robert Erlewine

There is a distinguished German Protestant tradition that understands Jesus, that is, his thoughts and consciousness, as essentially Greek rather than Jewish. Included in this tradition are such luminaries as Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schleiermacher, and Adolf von Harnack. Hermann Cohen is not the first Jewish thinker to oppose this notion and insist upon Jesus’s Jewishness.1 However, his account of the Jewish Jesus, particularly as it is developed in his two major treatises on philosophy of religion, Der Begriff der Religion im System der Philosophie [The Concept of Religion in the System of Philosophy] and Religion of Reason Out ...

Literatura Judía Latinoamericana Contemporánea: Una Antología = Literatura Judaica Latino-Americana Contemporânea: Uma Antologia = Contemporary Jewish Latin American Literature: An Anthology, Stephen Sadow

Stephen Sadow

To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill Dec 2012

To The Jew First: A Socio-Historical And Biblical-Theological Analysis Of The Pauline Teaching Of `Election' In Light Of Second Temple Jewish Patterns Of Thought, Anthony Thornhill

A. Chadwick Thornhill

Paul's "doctrine" of election has remained a controversial and enigmatic topic for centuries. Few studies, however, have approached Paul's doctrine through the context of Second Temple Judaism. This study examines Paul's view of election through the lens of Second Temple Jewish texts written prior to 70 CE. In doing so, it is argued that the best framework through which to view Paul's discussion of election is through a primarily corporate model of election. While such a model is rooted in Judaism, Paul departs from his Jewish contemporaries in arguing that the locus of election is in ...

Birthright 2012, Andrew Blitman

Andrew Blitman

"Birthright 2012" is a personal account of my voyage throughout Israel. The outer story incorporates humor, science, history, and my own observations as I explore the land. It should appeal to the armchair traveler who would like to experience the country but is unable to and also to anyone who would like to learn more about this bastion of democracy in the Middle East. Beneath this outer story there exists an inner story. Filled with humor, philosophy, and poetry, this underlying aspect of the book follows my own personal voyage to self-awareness. "Birthright 2012" chronicles the daily activities of my ...

Suessen Is Now Free Of Jews: World War Ii, The Holocaust, And Rural Judaism, Gilya Schmidt

Gilya Gerda Schmidt

Süssen Is Now Free of Jews offers a close look at the legacy of a few Jewish families from Süssen—a village in the District of Göppingen, which is located in the state of Baden Württemberg in southern Germany. The author, Gilya Gerda Schmidt, looks at this rural region through the lens of two Jewish families—the Langs and

the Ottenheimers—who settled there in the early twentieth century. As a child, she shared with the Langs the same living space for just a few months. She remembers her mother’s telling her of the Jews who lived in Süssen ...

'Olah: The Rhetoric Of Burnt Offerings, James Watts Feb 2012

'Olah: The Rhetoric Of Burnt Offerings, James Watts

James Watts

The ‘olah offering receives pride of place in most lists of sacrifices in the Hebrew Bible, including the ritual rules of Leviticus. Its prominence in these texts suggests that the writers expected its mention to have an effect on their audience. This rhetorical effect must be evaluated and understood before the references to the `olah can be used to reconstruct ancient religious practices reliably. A comparative analysis of the rhetoric about the `olah suggests that its priority burnished the image of priests as devoted selflessly to divine worship and drew attention away from their economic interests in the sacrificial system ...
