Streams of Consciousness

This short creative prose illustrates an experience that I had while rotating at the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital. I hope readers will reflect on the philosophical tension between neurology and psychiatry and also deepen their appreciation for the human behind the label of a refractory patient.

Where Loneliness Lives, Supreetha Gubbala Jan 2019

Where Loneliness Lives, Supreetha Gubbala

Streams of Consciousness

I spent much of my fourth year of medical school away concentrating my time in the golden state. This poem is about disrupting speckles of loneliness and longing that oddly penetrated even the most beautiful of settings, and the ugliness of this often frustrating emotion.

When I return home after traveling for a long period, I often turn to my favorite books to reorient myself; to feel at home again. This piece is about an unusual, coming-together of traveling as an Indian woman, how it has forced me to face the incongruences in my identity and the first novel that my father gave me.

A Primary Care Problem, Abhinav Gupta

Streams of Consciousness

I wrote this poem after an experience during my emergency medicine sub-internship when we found a surprising diagnosis that was thought to be ‘non-emergent’. The experience helped me to realize that even though we may have specific areas of expertise within the medical field, we all share the responsibility to treat patients, particularly those who are underserved or part of vulnerable populations, with compassion.

And The Bottle, Jared Giordano

Streams of Consciousness

I wrote this reflection early in my 3rd year medicine rotation after taking care of my first CIWA patient. It seemed like no matter what we did, this man would return again and again for detoxification after a suicide attempt. I felt hopeless because all we could do for him was prevent a seizure and give him toothpaste and eyedrops. He needed so much more, but as an institution we weren’t able to connect him with consistent outpatient psychiatry, a stable living environment, or any of the myriad things that he lacked. I realized the critical role of outpatient ...
