Book Review: Placemaking With Children And Youth: Participatory Strategies For Planning Sustainable Communities, Brandy C. Judkins Jul 2019

Book Review: Placemaking With Children And Youth: Participatory Strategies For Planning Sustainable Communities, Brandy C. Judkins

eJournal of Public Affairs

This review discusses Derr, Chawla, and Mintzer's Placemaking with children and youth: Participatory strategies for planning sustainable communities. The text sheds light into a gap in urban and community planning---inclusion of children and youths in the design of their built environment. The text seeks to change discourse by instructing current and future city planners, architects, industrial and interior designers, interior decorators, landscape architects, contractors, government officials, and educators in engaging the children and youths of their communities in design, decision-making, and development to create truly sustainable communities that meet the needs of all who live within them. Divided into ...

Making Sustainability Affordable In Parlier, Kyle Alexander Ferguson Jun 2019

Making Sustainability Affordable In Parlier, Kyle Alexander Ferguson

City and Regional Planning

As climate change continues to threaten everyday life on Earth, humans from every corner of this planet struggle to keep up with changes due access, attitudes, and most importantly affordability. Over the past decade, governments around the world have invested billions into renewable power. Private investors followed, hoping to cash in on what looked like a transformational shift in the way the world produced electricity and lived sustainability. It felt as though it was a way to add jobs, manage fossil-fuel prices, and curb the impending affects of global warming. Unfortunately, a sustainable world will not happen overnight and requires ...

Resurrecting A Fallen Angel: Architecture Remediating Pollution In Mexico City, Karen Rios May 2019

Resurrecting A Fallen Angel: Architecture Remediating Pollution In Mexico City, Karen Rios

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Mexico City's population of over twenty-one million inhabitants makes it the second largest city in the world. Consequently, air pollution levels in the capital are outrageous.

The following proposal is not an attempt at fixing the city's pollution issues but, rather, presenting an innovative solution to be adopted throughout the city. The thesis aims at solving the contamination crisis' physical and psychological aspects.

That is, a combination of architectural intervention and community involvement will help slow down the rising pollution levels in a once beautiful city. Perhaps starting at a micro scale and spreading throughout the city.

Multi-Purposeful Water Design For Monte Sano Park In Baton Rouge, Yuta Masakane Mar 2019

Multi-Purposeful Water Design For Monte Sano Park In Baton Rouge, Yuta Masakane

LSU Master's Theses

Today, water-related disasters, including hurricanes, flood, and stormwater surge, are occurring more frequently than in the past due to extreme weather brought by climate change all over the world. In August 2016, Baton Rouge had a historic heavy rain which brought flood and negative economic impacts specifically on the north Baton Rouge area. To mitigate the negative impact of future flooding, in Monte Sano Park and its neighborhoods in north Baton Rouge, it would be helpful to implement green infrastructure which utilizes natural infiltration process of soils and plants to slow, store, and treat the stormwater as well as enhances ...
