Facilities & Campus Services, Sustainable UMass and Campus Planning support sustainability and energy conservation initiatives by providing in-house resources to campus staff as well as designers and contractors working with the University. The UMass Amherst Green Building Guidelines provide a framework for approaching new construction and major renovation projects at UMass Amherst that are undergoing LEED certification by focusing the conversation on green building aspects that are most important to the campus. They are intended to be the beginning of a dynamic conversation between designers, environmental consultants and constructors, university stakeholders, and users of new high performance buildings.

The Ghost Houses project was not supposed to be possible—five units of housing and a studio in three structures on a one-quarter acre infill lot with an historic zoning overlay. Yet, by using the history of the site as a wedge, we were able to overcome ossified regulations to create a progressive project consistent with our interest in dense, walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and architecture that is simultaneously responsive to both its locus and global environmental concerns.

Over the last thirty years, presidents from Jimmy Carter to George W. Bush have introduced an array of environmentally progressive technologies and strategies to the White House (and have, at least once, eliminated them). These modifications were made for reasons both ethical and political—motivations that shifted over time and responded to changes in American societal attitudes toward green building. These changing postures reveal how the White House is used by both to reflect public policy and to provide an example of steps that could be taken to increase the sustainability of the average home or office.

This paper proposes an operational framework for developing an environmentally progressive mode of design practice. This framework, based on the concepts of frugality and robustness, seeks to balance a project's first cost with the anticipated energy and material flows over its lifetime. The combination of elements and conditions in inner-urban areas may be argued to constitute established patterns of urban sustainability. This paper develops the argument through a case study of the South Brisbane peninsula, one of Queensland’s oldest and densest inner-urban areas. For the purposes of the paper, urban sustainability is defined in the context of urban design and development. This definition highlights the interrelationship between urban form and structure, and the social and economic life of the city.
