Libraries are under pressure to demonstrate their value within their constantly evolving educational institutions or in their communities. The presenters will propose skills to strengthen library relevance that are applicable to all libraries: STOP – Evaluate where you are. Assess your current practices and determine areas for improvement. COLLABORATE - Identify opportunities for partnerships with organizations or groups whose goals align with yours. Buildings With Brain Power: Library Architecture In Neural Terms., Hannah Bennett Aug 2014

Buildings With Brain Power: Library Architecture In Neural Terms., Hannah Bennett

Hannah Bennett

The connection between neuroscience and the built environment is a fairly new interdisciplinary field and one in which both fields, in their respective pursuits, have worked to understand the relationship between design choices, human behavior, and biological processes. Taken together and applied in tandem, these two activities have potential to vastly improve the effectiveness of buildings designed with the healthcare facilities, laboratories, or elementary schools, all of which share objectives of healing and intellectual cultivation. This paper will extend the dialogue to library design, perhaps the most representationally loaded expression of “mental space.” The library has seen profound changes in ...

Purdue University’s commitment to active learning requires facilities that support small-‐group work, peer learning, the use of technology, and other classroom innovations. The Active Learning Center is intended to provide classroom space combined seamlessly with library space to meet these needs. Members of the Libraries faculty and staff conducted a series of information-‐gathering activities to gain insight into the range of activities, work practices and preferences that the new building must support. It is our hope that the building will indeed support these activities, serve as a centrally located, flagship building for Purdue University, and support and ...

Appearances Do Matter! What Libraries Can Learn From Clinton Kelly, Nancy E. Fawley Aug 2013

Appearances Do Matter! What Libraries Can Learn From Clinton Kelly, Nancy E. Fawley

Nancy Fawley

One could easily mistake Clinton Kelly’s closing keynote presentation at ACRL 2011 in Philadelphia last March as light fare. Kelly, cohost of TLC’s What Not To Wear, spoke enthusiastically about the importance of one’s appearance and the necessity of making an extra effort in the way individuals present themselves. His keynote address, and the fact that a fashion expert was a speaker at a conference for librarians, sparked debates on Twitter and in the blogosphere. Do appearances matter? I say they do and add that this applies to buildings and objects, as well. Academic libraries, especially, could ...

Practical Approaches And Proposed Strategies For Measuring Selected Aspects Of Community-Based Broadband Deployment And Use, Lisandra R. Carmichael Dec 2012

Practical Approaches And Proposed Strategies For Measuring Selected Aspects Of Community-Based Broadband Deployment And Use, Lisandra R. Carmichael

Lisandra R Carmichael

Studies in rural Florida community anchor institutions (CAIs) have concluded that existing national measurement practices for broadband penetration, adoption, and impact are often poorly defined, confusing or inadequate to inform decisions about community broadband deployment and adoption. As a result, local broadband initiatives may be hindered by "measurement confusion."

Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Conservation (Jmamc) Project 27-31 August 2012, Michaelle L. Biddle Sep 2012

Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Conservation (Jmamc) Project 27-31 August 2012, Michaelle L. Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

The Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Collection is one of the oldest and largest manuscript collections in Nigeria. Because of the collection’s importance, its extremely poor housing and condition, the Jos Museum Arabic Manuscripts Conservation (JMAMC) Project was created. The goal of the week-long project was to gather fine-grained, detailed information as to the state of the collection so that a more comprehensive conservation, cataloging and digitization project could be formulated. Biddle details why the collection should be transferred on long-term loan to Arewa House Kaduna.

The Design Workshop Archive And Digital Collection: A Collaboration Broadening Discovery, Access And Use Of Design Materials, Cheryl D. Walters, Bradford R. Cole, Sara Skindelien, Hillary Osborne

Cheryl D. Walters

This presentation deals with the Design Workshop Archive and Digital Collection, a collaborative project of Utah State University Libraries, the University's Landscape Architecture & Environmental Planning Dept. and Design Workshop, a landscape architectural firm based in Denver, Colorado. The story of this project is told from the above three perspectives. Issues discussed include evolution of protocols to assist firm principals in determining which projects and materials should be archived, strategies for handling diverse formats (obsolete through born digital), and innovative ways to broaden discovery, access and use of these design materials through digital collections and learning objects.

"Recent Preservation And Conservation Activities For Northern Nigerian Manuscripts In Arabic Script", Michaelle L. Biddle

Michaelle Biddle

Nigeria has a rich Islamic manuscript heritage in danger of being lost due to lack of in-country preservation and conservation efforts. Of interest to scholars world-wide, these manuscripts in Arabic script are dispersed throughout Nigerian institutions and private collections. Since 2007 there has been a sustained effort to increase local awareness and Northern Nigerian regional capacity for care, conservation and maintenance of these collections
