The active green space ratio in urban areas in Turkey has been determined as 10 m2 per capita in accordance with the Construction Law no. 3194. However, this ratio couldn’t be reached in most of the cities on the country scale in Turkey. This ratio of green space in urban areas per capita has been determined as 12,68 m2 for Izmir, and 11,52 m2 for Adana which are the two of the case cities of this study. Roads connect populations, societies, cultures and economies (Havlick, 2002; Delgado et al., 2007). They also serve astonishing landscapes for the travelers. Forested rural landscapes along the coastal zones display unique features which vary spatially and temporally (Marsh, 2010). Therefore, the coastal roadside landscape components involving particularly the sea, trees, shrubs, villages and agricultural areas supply recreation for the people who experience this trip. Roadside landscape and scenic quality not only satisfy visual perception of the travelers (Akbar et al. 2003) but also serve for the safe and comfortable travel (Mok et al., 2006; Öztürk and Gökyer, 2015).

Recently overall the world, fragmentation in land uses has increased due to the rapid increase in population, urbanization and unplanned development. Fragmented landscapes have less connectivity and greater isolation. On the other hand, species are negatively influenced in a fragmented landscape. Greenway and connectivity are evaluated in landscape ecological studies in order to mitigate negative ecological conditions in urban areas (UN, 2014; Leitao and Ahern, 2002, Linehan et al., 1995). Watershed planning realm has predominantly been posed by human/urbancentric planning practice solely based on socio-economic dynamics, rather than physical and ecological thresholds at regional level. Thus planning, conservation and management efforts in an individualistic way lack of elaborating natural and cultural landscapes in a holistic way and introducing a monolithic planning and management discourse. This inevitably results in a gap between large scale planning scheme and local plans and, consecutively conservation pursuits both in judicial and administrative spheres remained behind the reach of delivering a comprehensive (conservation) framework.
