Life Cycle Costing (LCC) is the consideration of all ‘relevant’ costs and revenues associated with the acquisition and ownership of an asset. LCC has a number of relevant applications, these include project appraisal; facilities management; procurement and tendering and as a means to evaluate sustainable construction. Although these advantages are well recognised, the process is underutilised due to a number of documented barriers to adoption. Notably these include lack of accurate historical databases; the perceived complexity and time consuming nature of the calculations; lack of a standard LCC methodology, and that clients are not requesting LCC. The research presented is ...

The Construction IT Alliance (CitA) has been promoting the benefits of digitisation in the construction and engineering industry in Ireland since its formation back in 2002. Whilst the Alliance has always strived to ensure that its members are exposed to a wide spectrum of contemporary digital tools and processes, the concept of Building Information Modelling (BIM) has dominated the focus of its activities over the past five years.

BIM can be described as a digital tool that facilitates everybody to better understand a building or structure through the use of a digital model which draws on a range of data ...

The Development Of A Bim Based Building Measurement Learning Tool, Rick Best

Rick Best

The paper discusses the development of an integrated tool for teaching and learning building measurement. A 3D CAD IFC-compliant building information model of a small two-storey residential building was created complete with electrical and hydraulic services and all specification information using Archicad. A complete bill of quantities was measured from the BIM using Buildsoft, and exported to Microsoft Office. The exported dimensions and quantities were used to produce a fully annotated version of the BQ.

The outcome is a package comprising a CD-ROM and a conventional book. The CD containing the BIM, the Buildsoft files, a 3D model viewer and ...
