Each year the Chartered Institute of Building hosts a six-week virtual competition called the Global Student Challenge. Three Cal Poly Construction Management students and myself competed in this competition. Bridge House was severely neglected for years since its creation. Our team’s primary objective was to rejuvenate the structure and once again make it a priority destination for the public when visiting the Experimental Structures Laboratory. With this goal in mind, we replaced the plywood barricades with guard railings designed and fabricated by the team to complement those installed on the structure by the previous group. Skyscrapers become possible because of the Industrial Revolution which provided the steel needed for its tall structure and the demand for office space. The early skyscrapers were both praised and criticized by the public. Concerns over the health, economic, and aesthetic consequences led to the passing of the 1916 Zone Ordinance. Primary obstructions to the use of CLT shear walls have been the lack of an economic connection type that does not compromise the structural integrity and has the robustness that CLT shear wall panels deserve. This thesis is a part of ongoing research investigating the effects of alkali-silica reactions (ASR) on concrete’s mechanical properties. Over 50 concrete specimens have been cast and cured to encourage ASR development to the point of damage in less than a year. Specimens include 42”×30”×10” shear specimens, 14”×14”×14” blocks, 6”×6”×14” prisms, 4”×4”×16” prisms, cylinders, and wedge splitting test specimens. Some samples are stored in a fog room with conditions of 100oF, and 95% relative humidity and wrapped in burlap wetted or submerged in 1.0M sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Other specimens are ...
