"The mining industry currently uses tri-cone, or roller cone bits to drill blast holes. Bit inserts used in these drill heads are predominantly manufactured from either cemented carbides or steels. The cemented carbides afford high hardness along with good wear resistance; however they have a low fracture toughness which can result in catastrophic failure. Steels, while exhibiting a much higher fracture toughness, have a low hardness which results in poor wear resistance. The antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in PbZrO3-based oxides is of both fundamental and practical importance. In ceramics in which such a transition readily occurs, the antiferroelectric and the ferroelectric phases often coexist in individual grains with a coherent interphase interface. In this work, the electric biasing in situ transmission electron microscopy technique is employed to directly observe a unique microstructural dynamic when ferroelectric and antiferroelectric domains are driven by a moderate electric field to interact. (Bi 1/2Na 1/2)TiO 3-based solid solutions, one of the major systems of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics, exhibit a low thermal depolarization temperature ( T d~100°C). It was reported that by incorporating 30 mol% ZnO particles to form a ceramic composite of (Bi 1/2Na 1/2) 0.94Ba 0.06TiO 3/ZnO, the depolarization process can be shifted up to ~250 °C. Lead-free potassium and sodium niobate (KNN) nanofiber webs with random and aligned configurations were prepared by electrospinning process from polymer-modified chemical solution. The crystallization process, structure, composition, dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties of the nanofibers and nanofiber webs were investigated. Theoretical analysis and experimental results showed that the surface-induced heterogeneous nucleation resulted in the remarkable lower crystallization temperature for the KNN nanofibers with {100} orientation of the perovskite phase in contrast to the bulk KNN gel, and thus well-controlled chemical stoichiometry. In petroleum processing, the flow of catalyst readily leads to erosion of piping in a fluid catalytic cracking unit. Advances in coating materials and processes necessitate a re-evaluation of current protection methods. Commercially available tungsten-carbide (WC) claddings and nanostructured WC-W CVD coatings were investigated as potential alternative erosion-resistant coatings. Erosion tests by solid particle impingement were conducted on 2 variations of claddings and 1 variation of WC-W coatings following ASTM standard G76. A36 steel coupons were used as reference samples. restorations and to assess the mechanical properties of the 3D printed zirconia.

Hypotheses: 1) The flexural strength of 3D printed yttria-stabilized zirconia is comparable or superior to milled yttria-stabilized, isostatic pressed zirconia, and 2) thermocycling and chewing simulation does not affect the flexural strength of 3D printed yttria-stabilized zirconia.

This study used grain size control and ductile phase reinforcement to improve fracture toughness of ����� ceramics. Alpha alumina particles of 100 nm, 0.5-1 micrometers, and 10 micrometers were coated with 1-5 nm nickel by electroless nickel plating (ENP). The coated powders were consolidated at 1200℃-1500℃ by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintered samples were annealed at 1100 oC for 1.5 hours and 10 hours to determine the effect of post sintering annealing on hardness and fracture toughness. The off-axis compressive behavior of ice-templated ceramic was analyzed using experimental results and micro-mechanical model simulation. Ice-templated ceramics is a versatile processing technique used to manufacture anisotropic ceramic foam by exploiting the anisotropic growth characteristics and lamellar morphology. The ice-templating process results in processing-structure-property relationships determined by the microstructure. A recent study evaluated tensile stress-strain and tensile creep behavior of an oxide-oxide composite (Nextel™720/alumina) with laser-drilled effusion holes at 1200°C. It was determined that the presence of laser-drilled holes degraded the mechanical properties and performance of the CMC as a result of damage caused to the composite microstructure by the laser drilling process. Interlaminar shear properties of a high temperature polymer matrix composite (HTPMC) and a ceramic matrix composite (CMC) were evaluated at elevated tempera- ture. Two variants of the HTPMC were studied. Both consisted of a high-temperature polyimide (AFR-PE-4) matrix reinforced with Astroquartz-III pre-impregnated glass fabric woven in an eight-harness-satin weave. The first HTPMC variant also contained stainless steel foil at the midplane, while the second HTPMC variant did not. Reactive Ion Etching Selectivity Of Si/Sio2: Comparing Of Two fluorocarbon Gases Chf3 And Cf4, Meiyue Zhang, Pat Watson

Two reactive ion etching (RIE) processes were studied to show the relative etch selectivity between SiO2 and Si using two fluorocarbon gases, CF4 and CHF3. Results show that CHF3 gives better selectivity (16:1) over CF4 (1.2 :1). On the other hand, the etch rate of SiO2 of CF4 is approximately 52.8 nm/min, faster than CHF3 (32.4 nm/min).

A feasibility of rapid setting cement (RSC) as an agent of immobilization for certain elements such as fission products or radioactive materials was explored.
