Puerto Rico was devastated by Hurricane Maria on September 20, 2017. Due to a delayed and insufficient official response from the local and federal governments and other aid agencies, the effects are still crippling more than a year after the event. When official response networks failed, communities often engaged in informal reconstruction processes to facilitate their recovery. This research seeks to explain why certain communities were effective in reconstructing on their own and uses social capital theory as the theoretical framework. This data sheet shows the measurements taken using a Marchetti dilatometer in a soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff wall for the purpose of finding the in situ lateral stresses. There are several data sets within the data sheet. Each set is labelled with the time, date, and location along the cutoff wall. The transverse orientation is perpendicular to the wall alignment and the longitudinal orientation is parallel to the wall alignment.

This data sheet shows the measurements taken from vane shear tests in a soil-bentonite slurry trench cutoff wall. The vane obtained for the test was built in accordance to the ASTM standards of designation 2573. Due to the softness of the clay, to ensure the feasibility of acceptable torque resolution, the vane’s diameter, shaft diameter, and vane height at 100 mm, 16.5 mm, and 250 mm respectively were the largest acceptable sizes to use from the abovementioned standards.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the fatigue cracking performance of geogrid-reinforced Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA) for use in airfield runways. An airfield HMA mixture with four different geogrid types were selected for this study. The geogrids varied in tensile strength, coating type, opening size, thickness, and fiber material. Several different laboratory performance tests were conducted (Dynamic Complex Modulus, DCM, Overlay Test, OT, and Indirect Tensile Strength, ITS) and the fatigue and/or cracking performance was evaluated. The repeatability, reproducibility, and sources of error inherent in a given measurement are important considerations for potential users. To quantify errors arising from a single operator or multiple laboratories, most testing standards uses a one-way analysis of variance- (ANOVA-) based method, which utilizes a simple standard deviation across all measurements. Cladding systems are conventionally designed to serve an architectural purpose and provide environmental protection for building occupants. Recent research has been conducted to enhance structural resiliency by leveraging cladding systems against man-made and natural hazards. The vast majority of the work includes the use of sacrificial cladding panels and energy dissipating connectors. This paper is a case study that identifies why Geofoam was used as in-fill material for a construction project located at a high school in Encinitas, CA. The Geofoam was installed under a stairway that connects to a structural retaining wall. The concrete formwork was connected directly to the foam and the stairs were poured in place onsite. Soil liquefaction, or loss of strength due to excess pore water pressures generated during dynamic loading, is a main cause of damage during earthquakes. When a soil liquefies (referred to as triggering), it may lose its ability to support overlying structures, deform vertically or laterally, or cause buoyant uplift of buried utilities. Empirical liquefaction models, used to predict liquefaction potential based upon in-situ soil index property measurements and anticipated level of seismic loading, are the standard of practice for assessing liquefaction triggering. Land loss in South Louisiana is increasing at a fairly rapid rate. In an effort to reduce land loss and save the marshes of Louisiana, marsh creation projects have been proposed in carefully selected regions around the coast as part of the CPRA Coastal Master Plan 2017. Properties and characteristics of the soil obtained from soil borings were analyzed and used to determine the various design parameters that allow the marsh creation process to occur. Use of precast substructure in accelerated bridge construction (ABC) has been gaining popularity due to its advantages over traditional cast-in-place (CIP) construction. When using vertical precast members (e.g., columns and piles) in bridge substructure construction, they must be connected to the adjoining members (e.g., bent cap, pile cap, and abutment) reliably. For this thesis, a study was completed on two different structures on the UCF Orlando campus through the use of both structural plans and point cloud technology. The results sought to understand the viability of point cloud technology as an accurate tool for the static and dynamic modal analysis of existing structures.
