Navigating Uncertainty In Automotive Technology Instruction: The Subjective Experiences Of Automotive Instructors During Laboratory Activities, John Martin Porter II 2018 Antioch University - PhD Program in Leadership and Change

Navigating Uncertainty In Automotive Technology Instruction: The Subjective Experiences Of Automotive Instructors During Laboratory Activities, John Martin Porter Ii

Dissertations & Theses

Educational researchers have conducted very few studies on the subjective experiences of both trained and self-taught auto mechanics (Barber, 2003, 2004; Nelsen, 1997, 2010). Further, no present studies explore the subjective experience of the automotive instructor as he or she experiences uncertainty in the automotive lab. This study addresses a gap in the current literature on career/technical instructor development. For this study, data were gathered by video recording automotive laboratory activities at three Midwestern automotive programs. Interpersonal Process Recall (IPR) interviews were conducted with automotive instructors as they observed themselves navigating the lab environment. Data from the IPR interviews ...

Towards Better Outcomes For Families With Transition-Age Youth Or Young Adults With Asd: A Mixed Methods Study From A Parent’S Perspective, Wing Hang Wong

Theses and Dissertations--Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology

The after-high-school outcomes for individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families are less than desirable. The current study employed an exploratory sequential mixed methods design in order to enhance understanding of the family adaptation process during transition. First, a qualitative study was conducted in order to understand the stressors, external and internal support, coping strategies, and family adaptation outcomes during transition, from a parent’s perspective, using the ABCX model. Thirteen parents of adolescents and young adults with ASD were interviewed. These parents reported a continually high level of stress due to normative strains and ASD-related demands. They ...

Factors Influencing Student Enrollment In Career Academy Programs, Whitney Stokes Ketchledge 2018 Old Dominion University

Factors Influencing Student Enrollment In Career Academy Programs, Whitney Stokes Ketchledge

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Career academies are small learning communities that allow high school students to learn their core content in the context of the career field they may be interested in pursuing. This type of learning environment incorporates business and industry and postsecondary institutions so academy students receive academic curricula that prepares them for higher education and allows students to have experiences in the career field. There is considerable research demonstrating strong benefits of the academy model to students and teachers, but there is little indicating why students enroll in the academy and what methods of recruitment may work best.

The purpose of ...

Promoting Active And Sustained School-Business Partnerships: An Exploratory Case Study Of An It Academy, Victor M. Hernandez-Gantes, Simone J. Brookins, Edward C. Fletcher Jr.

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

In support of the national push for promoting career readiness, school-business partnerships have been noted as an important support strategy. However, there is limited research in the context of career academies. Thus, we sought to explore the nature of a partnership between an information technology (IT) career academy and local business partners. We found that the development of social capital is required to keep the network of partners bonded toward a common goal, bridged through a Business Advisory Council to facilitate planning and related supports, and linked by a local web of connecting relationships. Study findings add to the limited ...

Career And Technical Education For Sustainability: A Multiple Case Study Of Innovative Community College Programs, James A. Gregson, Karen Ruppel

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

This multiple case study explored Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs that were identified as having a focus on sustainability. Using the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (AASHE STARS) as a conceptual framework, the researchers interpreted whether the social, economic, and environmental concepts of sustainability were included in these programs' curriculum. Findings suggested that several factors impacted program curriculum: (1) attentiveness to industry trends; (2) sustainability as an institutional core value; (3) geographic location of urban versus rural; (4) program maturity; and (5) advisory committee influence. Findings also suggested a ...

Economic Attainment Patterns Of College-Educated Women In Mid-Career: An Objective Indicator Of Career Success, Hyojung Han, Jay W. Rojewski

Journal of Research in Technical Careers

The purpose of this study was to identify latent classes of college-educated late-baby-boomer generation women’s economic attainment (income) patterns during mid-career and examine the family and job satisfaction characteristics within each latent class. Longitudinal latent class analysis was used to analyze income data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 for 607 college-educated women in the United States for the years 1990 to 2010. The analysis revealed five distinct patterns of women’s economic attainment. A majority of the sample (72.7%) fell into the sustained growth group in which women’s economic attainment increased continuously and consistently ...

Mississippi Choices And The Influence Of Career And Technical Education, Charish Rene PIerce, Charish Rene Pierce, charish PIerce 2017 University of Southern Mississippi

Mississippi Choices And The Influence Of Career And Technical Education, Charish Rene Pierce, Charish Rene Pierce, Charish Pierce

Dissertations

Mississippi counselors serve in a variety of roles in order to meet the needs of all students. The role of the school counselor is to execute efforts to address each student’s academic, personal/social, and career development needs (ASCA, 2005). Middle and high school counselors are often tasked with activities that do not align with national and state standards for school counseling. Thus, these activities generate very little time for activities such as the Choices program and career development.

This study examined the middle and high school counselors’ usage of the Choices program. In addition, the research study explored ...

Electronic Flight Bag Policies At Collegiate Aviation Programs, Tyler A. Babb

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) are now standard in the commercial aviation industry. Air carriers must implement and maintain EFB training and policies according to FAA regulations. Pilots are also using EFBs at collegiate aviation programs. This study investigated EFB practices at collegiate aviation programs, and how well these practices complied with FAA recommendations. Specifically, the research investigated whether or not the presence of an official EFB policy at a flight program had any relation to the quality of the EFB program. Results indicated that most programs somewhat conform to FAA policies, and in some cases, programs without policies had more ...

1c1. Students With An Edge: Community Partnerships That Support All Learners, Jill Janes, Kris Byam

Education Summit

Today’s pK-12 students are preparing for a future workplace that is being written while they inhabit our classrooms. Educators, employers, and policymakers each have a stake in creating a global-ready workforce, yet each entity alone cannot effectively reach all learners. This session highlights an exemplar model for pK-12 work-based learning that engages all stakeholders in ongoing development of community- and industry-relevant learning experiences. The model encourages community-based career awareness and exploration in elementary grades with more advanced preparation and training in high school. A continuum of structure for accessing work-based learning experiences at the high school provides a culminating ...

In Their Words: Student Choice In Training Markets: Victorian Examples, Justin Brown 2017 Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER)

In Their Words: Student Choice In Training Markets: Victorian Examples, Justin Brown

Dr Justin Brown

This research offers new insights into the options available to individuals as they navigate an increasingly complex vocational education and training (VET) system. It explores the extent to which the consumer model of training, aimed at increasing student choice, is changing the dynamics between prospective students and registered training organisations (RTOs). The focus here is on examples from Victoria, the first state to initiate market reforms, by means of the Victorian Training Guarantee. Importantly, this study directly represents the voice of students, asking how their choices were made as they navigated these new policy settings, and whether their choice, if ...

Parent Perceptions Of The Transition Programs Completed By Their Adult Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Judithanne Arcaro

Ed.D. Dissertations

The lifelong effects of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) impact the living, employment, and social aspects for individuals with the diagnosis and their families. In this study, I sought to determine parent perspectives of school transition programs completed by their adult children with ASD. Guided by the theoretical framework from Bronfenbrenner, Freire, and Mezirow, my purpose was to identify transition practices with which parents were satisfied and dissatisfied, as well as to seek their input about improving transition programming. With the unemployment rate for individuals with ASD reported by the Department of Labor as 80%, improvement of outcomes would reduce the ...
