Internationalization Of Chinese Firms In Europe: The Role Of Cultural Differences, selena aureli, paola demartini 2010 Urbino University

Internationalization Of Chinese Firms In Europe: The Role Of Cultural Differences, Selena Aureli, Paola Demartini

selena aureli

During the last decade China has become an important international investor and its firms have also begun to invest in Europe targeting strategically important and high-tech industries. However, there are many Chinese firms that have learned some hard lessons from European acquisitions. Among the various factors that can hinder or facilitate the success of Chinese investments, we devote special attention to the role of cultural differences. Drawing from international literature on cross-border acquisitions and cross-cultural management, we assume that national culture influences corporate strategies and structures as well as managers’ behaviour. To understand fully differences and modes of interactions among ...

The Role Of Chinese Smes In Italian Industrial Districts, Selena Aureli, Eduardo Barberis

selena aureli

Drawing from literature on immigrant entrepreneurship, local production systems and the concept of embeddedness, this paper aims to explore the role of small and medium sized firms established by Chinese immigrants in some Italian industrial districts. In particular, it highlights how this ethnic group is strictly involved and active in current changes into the district supply chain of the garment sector, notwithstanding the classical culturalist interpretation of immigrant’s firms which depicts Chinese businesses as self-referential and endogenous ethnic economies. Results indicate that Chinese firms do both create independent ethnic supply chains and collaborate with local firms, helping them to ...

Competitive Consequences Of Using A Category Captain, Upender Subramanian, Jagmohan S. Raju, Sanjay K. Dhar, Yusong Wang 2010 University of Pennsylvania

Competitive Consequences Of Using A Category Captain, Upender Subramanian, Jagmohan S. Raju, Sanjay K. Dhar, Yusong Wang

Marketing Papers

Many retailers designate one national brand manufacturer in each product category as a “category captain” to help manage the entire category. A category captain may perform demand-enhancing services such as better shelf arrangements, shelf-space management, and design and management of in-store displays. In this paper, we examine when and why a retailer may engage one manufacturer exclusively as a category captain to provide such service and the implications. We find that demand substitutability of competing brands gives rise to a service efficiency effect—service that expands the category is more effective in increasing a manufacturer's sales and margin than ...

Power Distance And Its Moderating Impact On Empowerment And Team Participation, Yi ZHANG 2010 Lingnan University

Power Distance And Its Moderating Impact On Empowerment And Team Participation, Yi Zhang

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper studies how power distance (the level of acceptance of an uneven distribution) impacts empowerment and team participation for two types of Chinese employees: those working in Chinese R&D companies, and employees of China-based American R&D companies. These two groups have different perceptions of individual power distance; Chinese employees in American companies have a lower power distance perception than Chinese employees in Chinese companies. High power distance and high empowerment lead to high team participation. Indigenously rooted cultures and companies' home-country cultures together influence employees' values, attitudes, and behaviors through top-down socialization and organizational acculturation processes. The findings have implications for managers in American companies, in evaluating and improving team participation.

Carrots And Sticks: By Auditing Executive Compensation And Benefits, Auditors Can Help Their Organization Move From Risk To Rewards Management, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Usha R. Balakrishnan 2010 University of Dayton

Carrots And Sticks: By Auditing Executive Compensation And Benefits, Auditors Can Help Their Organization Move From Risk To Rewards Management, Sridhar Ramamoorti, Usha R. Balakrishnan

Accounting Faculty Publications

Although the focus of risk management traditionally has been on downside risk, the time is right to focus this dialogue on upside risk — the management of value-creation opportunities through "rewards management." After all, rewards such as bonuses and stock options are typically greater for those who identify and leverage new value-creation opportunities. For-profit organizations favor those individuals who are well-connected and leverage their relationships to bring in clients and attract customers. Their selling ability, revenue-generating strategies, and overall modus operandi quickly earn them the coveted title of "rainmakers."

Nevertheless, rewards and incentives can encourage undesirable behaviors. Executives quickly learn that ...

The Effects Of Leadership Style And Employee’S Participation On Perceived Justice, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Management Faculty Research

The present study proposes and tests a model that examines the relationship between leadership style, employee’s participation, and justice perceptions. Moreover, the effect of leadership style on organizational justice was indirect through employee’s participation. There are also some interesting differences across different types of leadership style and justice.

Maintaining A Flexible Payout Policy In A Mature Industry: The Case Of Crown Cork And Seal In The Connelly Era, James Ang, Tom Arnold, C. Mitchell Conover, Carol Lancaster

Finance Faculty Publications

As related in these pages, the history of Crown Cork and Seal (hereafter known as “Crown”) provides us with a case of a company that stopped paying dividends but establish a disciplined share repurchase policy and did so for all the right reasons. Under family ownership in the 1950s, Crown lost market share and was on the brink of bankruptcy when its largest shareholder, John Connelly, was elected chairman of the board in 1957. Under John Connelly’s leadership, the firm restructured its operations and began a payout policy based solely on stock repurchases. During the Connelly era, the firm ...

Information Technology Capability Within Small-Medium Enterprises, Aurelio Ravarini

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The study presented in this thesis investigates the influence of IT capability on the relationship between IT expenditures and long term business performance. To do so, the Resource Based View (RBV) has been used as the theoretical framework, and, within such a framework, the concept of sustainable competitive advantage has been used as a point of reference. IT capability, a term often mentioned in the scientific literature dealing with the applications of RBV in the IS field, has been the subject of this study. Within the IS discipline, IT capability is perceived to have considerable influence on the effect of ...
